I ran through the fields with Sugar, the wind in my face, blowing my
small, triangular ears back against my head. Running is fun, it's what
we Poogles like to do, even with our stubby legs.
Woah. I should back up. Hi! My name is Licorice, a purple Poogle. I live
in the more grassy area of Endless Plains, the valley not too far from
Poogle Mountain. My best friend, Sugar, is a rare white Poogle, with her
fur glistening as if she WERE sugar.
Well, back to the story. I was running through the area of endless plains
where the grass is so tall that a Skeith would have to stand on his hind
legs to see over the grass. Sugar was running behind me, panting as much
as I was.
"Let's..take a...break..." she said, out of breath.
I looked back at her smiling, then tripped, and all went black.
***
I woke up in a comfy bed. Wait....bed? But...beds are in homes, and homes
are for NeoPets with owners, and I don't have an owner.
"This is way too weird," I muttered under my breath. "Well.... at least
it's too weird to get worse."
As if reading my mind, two strange creatures walked into the room. One
had a whip-like tail and ears built the same way. Huh? One of the elders
in our tribe had spoke of such a creature. I tried to look through my
injured mind to find the name of this creature. Aha! It was a Blue Gelert!
I looked to the creature beside it. With a puffy tail, a keen nose, and
a bluish-grey coat, this one looked like a wolf, only it had a sparkle
of kindness in it's eyes. This one I had heard about, also. A Lupe, I
think it was called...
As I was thinking, one of the creatures spoke up.
"Hello," the Gelert said. "I am Ruby, and he is Hunter. Our owner is
named Star Light." "Oh, sorry," I said suddenly. "My name is Licorice."
Ruby nodded, then went on. "We found you, unconscious, in Endless Plains,
sprawled over a Golden Mirror. I assume you were knocked unconscious by
that, which was most likely the litter of some non- respectful tourists.
We are very sorry for their mistake."
"Sorry?" I asked, astonished by her kindness. "But...You saved me, and
you did not leave the trash. Why be sorry?"
Hunter Spoke up. "Our owner has always taught us the ways of the kind,"
He said, matter-of-factly. "She always says, 'Do not blame others, even
if it is their wrong doings. Rather, take the matter into your own hands
and mend the brokenhearted, and say the apology that the wrongdoer did
not.'"
"Wow," I said, astonished. "Star Light seems like a nice person, trying
to mend the world of evil, and all. Can I meet her?"
The other two looked down at their paws.
"She is ill," Hunter said. "She went to the doctor, it will not kill
her, but she will be gone for a few days."
"If it is not deadly, why be so sad?" I asked.
"Even if one's sickness is not deadly, even if he is friend or enemy,
feel compassion for the suffering soul," Ruby recited.
Okay, this was strange. Feel compassion for an enemy? Take blame for
that which you did not do? I admit, our tribe is like that, but I thought
that Pets were ...well...cold-hearted. Also, our tribe never explained
the lessons in such words.
"Heh heh," Hunter laughed, a sparkle of kindness and understanding glistening
in his eyes. "I guess Poogles already know that, eh? Yes, of course. Master
tells us to obey them, not to annoy people with them. We must tell you
the rules, but must not confuse you, for you will not understand the rules
and try to avoid them. My apologies."
Ruby agreed, then spoke, "Sorry about him, sometimes when we have company,
he thinks he is 'all that'. So, I will just summarize the rules into one
of the most important ones: 'Everyone is your friend, but you do not follow
the disobedient. Rather, try to help them to follow the good with you."
Friends? Oh no! That sure rang a bell! Sugar! What had happened
to her?! "Um...Excuse me?" I asked, afraid. "Did you see a snow-white
Poogle around me, by any chance?"
Ruby smiled. "Yes," she answered. "I saw her running off, most likely
to get help. When I said we were taking you to our owners house to help
you, she sped off faster than the champion of Poogle Racing."
"Well, she has always been a little paranoid..." I answered, unsure if
Sugar was safe or not.
As I was thinking this, my pain seemed to disappear, so I decided to
explore the house. After telling the other two what I was going to do,
they decided to make some food and told me not to get into anything that
looked dangerous, even though they assured me this was a safe house.
Well, that was a wonderful thought. I muttered to myself that this was
not the time to get as paranoid as Sugar, so I went on with my expedition
of this place. In one room, there was a small, china lamp, in the shape
of a baby Bruce. I tried to turn it on, but then noticed that there was
no light bulb in which to light it. I looked to the rest of the room.
Hmmm. A small, twin-sized bed, a nice, wooden dresser, and...a nova? Just
as I was pondering on this thought, Ruby came in and announced supper.
I was about to ask why there was a nova in that room, but as I entered
the kitchen, the delicious smell that filled my nostrils made that thought
disappear.
Neggs, chocolates, and smoothies galore! After I was sure this wasn't
a dream, I started digging in, then remembered my manners and ate carefully.
After a DELICIOUS meal, I decided to say "Good Night," and go to bed.
Ruby and Hunter smiled, then went to their rooms. I went to the room where
I had laid, unconscious, before, and fell fast asleep.
***
I woke up in a silent, empty household. Ruby and Hunter must've went
to see their master, and didn't want to bother me. So they must be at
the hospital! I decided to go there, too. After walking along the path
to the hospital, I looked up at the towering giant of concrete, brick,
and paint above me. I proceeded to the front counter, and asked where
Star Light was.
"Room 213, 2nd floor. Go to the elevator to your left, then go to the
second floor, turn the corner, then walk down the hallway until you see
the NeoPets play room. Turn left, go down 3 doors, then the door to your
right is hers."
The old nurse at the counter said in a gloomy voice. I thanked her, then
went to the door where she had ordered. After knocking and getting no
answer, I crept into the room. The scene I saw will be in my mind forever.
Ruby was sleeping at the foot of the bed, curled up in the blankets, at
the feet of Star Light. Hunter was beside the bed, laying down on the
floor, also sleeping, with his head resting in his paws. Star Light herself
was in a bed, her forehead drenched in sweat. I went up to her and licked
her hand, but she did not wake up, even if her sleep was full of heavy
breathing, tossing, and turning.
Every now and then, a nurse would come in with a wet cloth to clean the
sweat off her head, or to check her temperature. "It...It is not a deadly
sickness..." one nurse assured another nurse. But, right after this bit
of encouragement was said, a doctor trotted in, remembering that there
would be no running in the hospital. "Mrs. Vulda! Mrs. Reandor!" The young
doctor said, panting. "X-rays show...that... there is a tumor in the lower
leg. We have to operate."
***
Everything that happened next was a blur. After Ruby and Hunter heard
this news, they both tried their hardest not to scream in terror. An hour
later, Star Light was rushed into the operating room, leaving the air
behind them full of hope...and despair. "Why....?" I wondered aloud. "Why
would Neopia be so harsh? NeoPets is supposed to be a fun world."
***
The hours that passed also were a blur. Hunter, Ruby, and I tried to
play with the toys available, but...Even though I had never met Star Light,
I pushed back the happiness of toys along with Ruby and Hunter, letting
the depression sink in. Soon, a nurse came in, brought us home, and gave
us pills to make us go to sleep. I tried to stay awake to hear some of
their words. "Since no one is here to give them food, we have to let them
sleep for the next week," one of the nurses said. Then all went black.
***
I woke up, looking into the glistening eyes of Star Light. Her eyes were
a beautiful cyan, and she had glistening golden hair, and a kind voice.
"Why, hello, Licorice," she said, eyes sparkling. "I see you have met
my pets. Want to become their sister?" I nodded yes, then asked if Sugar
could become one as well. Star Light nodded yes, and then I left my old
home to become part of a new loving family.

The End
***Authors Note**** This is not a true story, but I can name
one character that is "true". "Ruby" is Ruby346, a blue Gelert that my
friend and I own on the account that we share, gohangals. We adopted her,
and we advise you to adopt, as well. I wasn't thinking when I created
all the pets in this account, so with our other one, I will not make the
same mistake twice, and I advise you to do so, also. Have a nice life
in Neopia, all!
