The Watchers

by Sanara

Here is a little background on the tale I am about to begin to tell:

The Sight of Aishas
This story involves Aishas, and some very special ones that can actually see. You may be thinking, “But then are all the other Aishas blind?” Well, yes and no. See if you’ve ever noticed, Aishas always have their eyes closed, or squinted but that made little difference. But, Aishas don’t need their eyes. The Antenna on their heads sort of detect what’s around them and form an image in their heads of what’s there. Of course, these images have no color to them. But like all, there are a few exceptions…

Uni Meadows
The Uni meadows plays a big role in my story. The Uni meadows are just named after the most popular sight there, the Uni, but this meadow is also home to many other pets and it is said to be a type of sanctuary. A human hardly has ever ventured far into it. For it stretches for miles with possibly no end.

Character Background
The Main character, Cecerule (se-ses-er-rule) is based on my pet. One of the characters, Charedice (shard-ice) is Golden_sky’s (my friend) pet.

***

Everything was dark. Nothing but endless black that seemed to go on forever with no light at the end. And yet, the only thing living there, was not alive. No, not yet, she wouldn’t awaken for a couple days now. Still not knowing what she is, where she is, or if she’s even real. She will not know yet, not until she awakens.

The moon looked down on Uni Meadows shining its rays of silver. Some Uni’s were flying in the starlight, and all the pets below had settled down for their long night’s sleep.

But, in the darkness, someone was awake. Or should I say awakened. “Mew!” it said, crying for someone. It had awakened to the darkness, instead of the stars and Graceful Unicorns dancing in the sky. But, then something amazing happened. Out of the darkness popped out a small ray of silver. “It's outside,” she said in her head. “Outside, where, the silver is...” She clawed at the dark walls and little by little the silver spread defeating the darkness she had to live in.

Suddenly, the dark walls fell. The silver rays fell upon her shedding just enough light for the Uni Meadows to come to view. She closed her eyes. And quickly opened them. It was something she had never seen before. Something new, something exciting. Suddenly the most magnificent Uni flew down and stared. He was white with long blue wings and a Golden Horn that glinted in the moonlight. He neighed and studied what he saw before him. He gasped and slowly backed away. His eyes widened in fear and he said silently, “The-the- Watchers have returned!”

***

She just stared at the Uni and titled her head. “The Watchers?” she replied copying off the words he had spoken.

“D-d-don’t play dumb!” he said and flew away screaming, “The Watchers have returned!”

She stood there puzzling. Then while pondering, she noticed she had funny antenna on her head and a collar with an “A” on it. That’s when her instincts kicked in. Immediately she realized what she was. An Aisha, but she didn’t know what it was about her that frightened the Uni.

She decided she’d find that out sooner or later, but there was a whole world laid out before her to explore. She pranced around the meadows. No other NeoPet was out that night. They were either sleeping or avoiding her. Slowly the stars faded and the sky became a pinkish, and the sun rose over the meadow, taking the place of the moon. Orange clouds began to come into focus from the golden rays.

Unfortunately, the little Aisha didn’t get to see the wonderful miracle of dawn. Her eyes had suddenly closed and she fond herself seeing things differently. Everything was black and white and slowly formed in her mind. Confused and almost blind she went to a panic. She started running, hoping that maybe somehow her eyes would once again open.

She soon found herself in a place where open spaces were growing smaller and tall gloomy trees were popping up more and more. Finally she stopped. She was lost and frightened. She sat down, wondering what to do. A gentle breeze started to blow, making the trees sway. The sound soothed the Aisha and soon she was lost in a deep sleep.

Though asleep, the Aisha still heard what was going on around her. The gentle breeze was like any other, but there was a soft sound being carried from the wind. So soft even an Aisha could barely hear it. “Cecerule,” it said softly seeping though the trees. “Cecerule,” it went by again. The wind soon whispered more things. The Aisha didn’t understand. But after the name, it was like sweet chanting from far away. Chanting that was carried on flightless wings….

***

When she awoke it was late evening and her eyes still had not opened. She had no way of knowing where she was or how to get back. The breeze had died now, but she couldn’t get the mysterious chanting out of her head. “Cecerule,” she said to herself. She liked the sound of that. “Cecerule!” she yelled. She smiled and said to herself, “That’s my name, Cecerule.”

Though proud of her new name, she did not spend the time to beam on herself. She started walking south, since she supposed she had run north. She decided to take her time, since she had no one back in Uni Meadows that cared about her. As she walked she couldn’t shake off the feeling someone was watching her. Every time she stepped, leaves crackled beneath her feet, but she could almost swear every time she stepped, there was as second crackle.

Little by little the feeling grew worse. Once she thought she saw a figure scat behind a tree, but then again, it could have just been a Usul, and they were common in forests. But, if it were a simple Usul, then why would it follow her? Her uneasiness grew tremendously and she couldn’t help but run.

As her footsteps crackled the leaves louder and ever so faster, so did the second one. She ran faster avoiding the unnatural echo that followed. The trees began to grow darker now. “The sun must be setting,” she thought to herself. Soon she noticed the trees were becoming few. She saw just ahead the meadows. She leaped and slid to the grassy area.

It was then when all he stars came out. She saw all her antenna readings faded. She blinked and once again opened her silver eyes. She looked back at the trees. To her horror, staring back at her, was a pair of eyes. Emerald eyes staring as if taunting her. “What do you want?!” she yelled. The eyes just stared for a minute, blinked and a raspy voice arose, “ Beware the night, The Watchers are watching you."

***

With that the eyes blinked once more and faded as footsteps were heard slowly going away from Cecerule. She blinked, she didn’t have half a mind to chase after it, or half a mind to run. She just stood there wondering. A flashback came to her from last night. She noticed the fear in his eyes as she saw her.

“Why?” she wondered, “I don’t think I am any different from any other Aisha,” right then a voice came from the trees, “Ah, but indeed you are” it said in a soothing yet “snakish” voice.

“Huh?” Cecerule said, “Come out of those trees!” she said, arching her back and starting to hiss.

“Calm down child,” it said. “I am your brethren,” it said jumping from a nearby tree down to Cecerule. The moonlight revealed it to be a red Aisha She started circling Cecerule. “Tell me child, how are you and I different? And I don’t mean by that you are yellow and I am red.”

Cecerule stared at the Aisha for a moment. She looked at the Aisha’s face. “You’re eyes, they’re… closed still,” she said, gasping. “Yes, you're not like most Aisha’s no,” the feline said grinning. “Only few Aisha’s posses this power of sight, yes.”

“Wh-who are you?” Cecerule questioned.

The Aisha sat and said, “Why I am Charedice, and who might you be?”

“Umm erm- Cecerule,” she replied uneasily. Cecerule couldn’t take her eyes off of Charedice’s face. “D- do you know who… “The Watchers are?” Cecerule asked.

“Yes, The Watchers, I remember them,” Charedice said looking into the distance as if remembering something far off in memory. She snapped out of it, “Oh yes, The Watchers. It was some time ago...it was,” she said, “Yes, those woods you were just in once belonged to them, it did. They were a group of Aisha’s, like you, who had Sight. They would meet at midnight every night and do unspeakable things. Yes, horrid they were. The funny thing is, they started by just doing simple practical jokes, but night by night the jokes became less funny and more creepy...” Charedice trailed off.

“What kind of horrible things?” Cecerule managed to choke out. The red Aisha stared at Cecerule for a few minutes and continued,

“Oh, many things. Sometimes they would steal Neo eggs and drop them in a river, and the next day the parents would search high and low and never find their precious baby.”

Cecerule gasped. “That’s not all of it,” Charedice said reacting to the gasp. Charedice shivered but continued, “Some say they even worshiped the dark magic of the Dark Faerie. And many other horrid things I don’t think I could bare to tell,” Charedice said.

“What happened to them?” Cecerule asked.

“No one really knows...One day, it all just ended,” Charedice said shrugging. “And, why do they want me?” Cecerule questioned more bravely now.

Charedice gasped, “The-they- they’re back?” Charedice began slowly backing away.

“Hey wait!” Cecerule yelled, but it was too late, the Aisha had already disappeared from view. But Cecerule could hear her yell, “Beware of the night, brethren! The Watchers know all!” and with that her voice faded and Cecerule was once again dumbfounded and all alone…

***

Nothing had happened that next day. Cecerule had slept most of it away and once again the sun was beginning to set, leaving room for the moon to take over once again. And like the nights before the Silver circles opened once again. Cecerule couldn’t get the words of Charedice out of her head.

“I wish she was here,” Cecerule said to herself. She definitely didn’t want to be alone. She looked over to the woods. They definitely seemed creepier than it had before. The trees seemed to cast a shadow over the meadow, even though it was night. A breeze began to blow again. This time, laughter was carried by the wind. Then, one by one pairs of eyes began popping up. All were staring at her, taunting her. The laughter turned to chanting. The very same chanting as she had heard before. She felt part of herself wanting to join them, and the other part wanting to run.

She started walking, slowly, it was like a chant. She couldn’t help it, but she didn’t want to fight it. She got closer to the forest, little by little. The chanting became all that she saw, heard, spoke and thought. All the sudden, reality came back to her. She saw shadows running away scared and hissing at them was Charedice, “Yeah, run! That’s right!”

Cecerule spoke up “you, you saved me from them! Thank you!”

Charedice turned around and smirked. “No problem brethren,” she said grooming one of her antenna. “Why do they want me so bad, Charedice?”

Charedice stood still and silent for a minute, as if thinking, and then said, “Well,” she paused, "the reasons are simple, you have the sight, just like them.” She turned around and began to walk back in the forest.

“Thank you again,” Cecerule added before the red Aisha could get away.

Charedice turned around and smiled revealing two tiny pointy teeth and said, “Again, no problem, call when you will of me, brethren.” She ran off. She escaped for now, but she was alone again, and anything can happen when you’re alone….

The following night Charedice once again appeared to Cecerule. “Hey Charedice, what’s up?” Cecerule said in an instant.

“Hello brethren Cecerule, come we have much to see tonight,” Charedice said bowing.

“What do you mean?” Cecerule said tilting her head.

“Listen, you want to get the watchers off your back right?” Charedice said calmly. Cecerule looked at charedice and began, “Well yes, but-“

“No buts, we must hurry! We must!”

Charedice quickly interrupted. “Follow me, yes, follow,” Charedice said and started sprinting off.

Cecerule had no choice but to follow. After an hour of running the two Aisha’s soon came to a clearing. In the middle, a small pond like gold and around it four broken towers stood. “Where are we Charedice?” Cecerule asked looking at her reflection in the water. No answer came. “Charedice?” Cecerule looked up, no one. Cecerule shivered, where had she gone? Cecerule decided that maybe her friend had gone a bit further to make sure nothing was there. At least she hoped.

In the meantime she decided to look around. The towers seemed to cast a horrid shadow. The silence didn’t help any either. It was a deafening silence that pierced her heart and chilled her bones. She decided to get her mind off the subject she would inspect the towers further. Nothing special about them, just old grey and rocky. She sighed and looked at her reflection in the golden pond.

For once she actually saw herself, “Not half bad,” she said. Her eyes seemed to glow like the moon in that pond. She sighed again and something caught her attention. Writing was being formed in the pond.

“B-E-W-A-R-E!!!" she said reading from the pond. It continued, this time faster. “Beware of the Darkness!!!” it said. The letters soon faded. New ones began, “Do not trust what you can only see.” It faded in ripples and soon in the waves wrote: “Beware of the Darkness. Do not trust what you can only see.”

Then it all faded in ripples and her reflection once again appeared. At that, eyes appeared in the reflection. This time, the eyes had a shape to go with them. She turned around and saw shadows, shadows of Aisha’s. They were all chanting once again. And this time she understood, “Oh mighty Darkness, come forth from the shadows, resurrect! And once more come forth on this world.” That was the chant, it struck fear into her heart. She realized a flame had started in the towers. And finally, a golden flame arose on the golden pond.

In the center of the flame a figure appeared, at first it was but flames, but then, it formed. “Charedice!” Cecerule yelled arching her back. The Aisha rose her head and grinned. She walked out of the flame and onto the water. She made it look like the water were a solid.

“Don’t be afraid Cecerule,” she said, “you and I are alike,” at that she opened her eyes. Her eyes were unlike all the others, they were as if made of the embers that she appeared from. “Come, step into the fire, it won’t hurt,” Charedice said pointing a paw to the fire. “It’s the only way you’ll be safe from the watchers.”

“Trust not what you see,” Cecerule said softly. She closed her eyes and a horrid image appeared. The fire was nothing but little dancing demon shadows. She opened her eyes and she saw now through different sets. The fire WAS evil. She looked at Charedice and saw the same shadow inside her. She gasped and shook her head. And once again saw through her usual eyes.

“Charedice, are you a part of the watchers?” Cecerule said shaking.

“I saw you- you were evil!” she yelled. Charedice laughed evilly.

“A part?! HA! I’m their God!” Charedice grinned, “I was hoping you’d come quietly, I was starting to like you, but, we’ll do things the old fashioned way,” The chanting became louder and more fierce.

“You can’t always trust what you see Cecerule.” All the sudden some fur flew out, and Charedice’s once tame hair became wild and her antenna grew back in her head and came out as Horns. Charedice became more muscular and she stood on two legs. Her paws became more hand-like and at the end of each finger a set of razor claws shot out. The little fangs she once had grew, and a new, full set of razor teeth formed. And last but not least, a fork tongue replaced her usual one. She laughed, her voice soon became a deep echo sounding from the depths of her throat.

“Beauty is but an illusion, brethren,” the monster hissed. Cecerule’s throat became dry and her heart began to pound. Charedice stared into her eyes and she gasped.

“It's you!” she hissed.

“Sorry, brethren, I’ll have to destroy you instead.” The monster's claws came slashing down.

Cecerule dodged but it still cut a deep wound in her side. “Stop it, you-you Dark Faerie minion!” Cecerule yelled.

Charedice got quite a tickle out of that remark. “Dark Faerie? Haven’t you noticed she’s gone? That’s because she’s MY minion!” The monster Aisha laughed and pointed to the fire which showed the once feared Faerie in a jar, torn up and crying.

“Whoa,” Cecerule said blinking. She gulped. This was the end. She couldn't use her ability to heal; it would all be over soon. The monster grinned at Cecerule and its claws were now a burning fire. Charedice chuckled yet again. The moon was slowly fading and the sun began to rise a hill nearby.

“Beware of the Dark," Cecerule muttered, “The only thing to destroy the Darkness is light!” at that she gathered all her strength and ran. The monster looked puzzled and got on all fours and ran after her. Cecerule stepped in the Light. The monster stopped.

“You think I’m that stupid?” she hissed. The monster was already backing up but getting ready to do an attack. A fireball began to form in her mouth. Cecerule fell to the ground. The light glinted off of her collar.

“Huh?” Cecerule said looking at it. She grinned and ripped off the "A" on her collar and made held it up in a position to where the light would reflect off of it toward Charedice. The "A" made the precious rays of sunshine flash towards Charedice. The ray cut a hole through her like a knife through the softest butter. The monster stared, fear in her eyes. The hole soon began to grow as if eating away its body.

“I should have foreseen this!” the monster wailed as it finally burst into ash. All the shadows soon stopped chanting and looked at Cecerule.

Then they all chanted, “Thank you, now our souls may rest” and they all blew away with the wind. It took Cecerule many years to figure it all out, but she figured, Charedice must have made those Aisha’s do such horrible things.

And many years ago they all slowly began to disappear till there was no one left, but the greedy demon needed worship and stole their souls form their resting-place and made them slaves once again. She did not know if she was a chosen one, or just lucky, but she figured, who cared? The Uni meadows would be safe, and no one would have to be afraid of the dark again.
