"I've heard of these pets. They are, or rather were, a secret
organisation dedicated to preventing the rise of any significant Neopian problems.
Several would-be warlords have been stopped in their tracks without the general
public knowing anything about it. They were also fundamental in acquiring information
during the theft of Coltzan's crown and Neopets V2. However, I was unaware that
Chrissy had anything to do with them…"
A long silence followed this statement. Eventually,
after several meaningful glances between the Lupe and the Eyrie, the Eyrie began
to talk.
"Listen. My name is White, and I used to run
the organisation. Now, I only run the side the supports Merridell. Shadow here
runs the side that supports Darigan."
"Get to the bit about Chrissy," Waterlily growled.
Shadow took over.
"Chrissy used to work for us, over a year ago.
Technically, she wasn't supposed to be able to leave the organisation. But after
her partner was eliminated…"
"Eliminated?"
"…She decided she wanted out. Took a bit of
me with her as well."
"Good for Chrissy," muttered Elenna. White continued.
"We, err, both contacted her with another mission
we wanted her on. Chrissy was the best, and not just because she has opposable
thumbs."
"Eh?"
"Thumbs are in short supply in Neopia. Not many
pets have them, and very few Humans work for us."
"Right… So what was this mission?"
The two leaders glanced at each other again,
as though wondering how much to tell them. "To steal the Orb," they replied
simply.
There was a very long silence. Then all three
pets spoke at once.
"We're going after her."
"No!"
"You can't…"
"Don't try and tell us what we can and can't
do," snapped Elenna. "Chrissy tries and it doesn't work, trust me."
"But we don't know where she is!"
"I do."
They all looked at Immacolata. She sighed, opening
a program on her laptop.
"Chrissy is tagged with a selenium based tracker.
I like to know where my owner is."
White looked impressed. "How'd you manage that?"
"Easy. It's in her shampoo. Selenium is great
on dandruff."
"Clever," shadow admitted.
"Now, all I do is run a scan through the weather
satellites. I, eh, made a few additions last time we were in space."
No one said anything. Shadow and White exchanged
raised eyebrows.
"And there we have it. Chrissy is in Merridell,
heading northwards towards the main road at about ten klicks an hour."
"Klicks?"
"Kilometres, if you prefer."
"Ah…"
"So… err, you can let me up now."
Waterlily didn't look happy, but moved off Shadow
anyway. Elenna also let White rise to his feet. "So, we have to track her down
and stop her before she gets that Orb. It could make things horribly wrong."
"Why?"
"Because we were both planning for the one side
to get the Orb. But Chrissy is neutral, and if she hasn't changed since the
last time we crossed paths…"
"From what I've heard she hasn't."
"Then she'll either sell it to the highest bidder,
which could cause problems, or worse, she'll try and get it out of the picture
entirely."
"Out of the picture, you mean…"
"She'll destroy it, or hide it," White finished
with a grim voice. "And I remember Chrissy very well, if she hides something,
it stays hidden," he scowled. "Including my Mike and Carassa Mug, if I remember
correctly."
"What, you never found that? That was ages ago!
Great joke, though…"
White ignored Shadow. It seemed like he had
had a lot of practice. "And if she wants something destroyed, there's no one
and nothing that can stop her."
"I have a feeling there is."
This time, it was Waterlily who had spoken up.
She was smiling. "Oh? Err… What?"
Elenna and Immacolata had got the same idea.
Smiling, they finished together.
"Us."
To be continued...
