The Black Vortex: Part Three

by snickering_1

Keiroth made his way to Elgnad Castle, screaming. He ran up to the castle door, knocking loudly.

Moments later, Kim poked her head out of the gate, blinking. "Keiroth! What're you doing here at this time of-"

Her sentence was cut off by Arytil, who ran straight into Kim's face, unable to stop her own flight. Kim yelled and brushed Ary off of her.

"What in blazes is going on here?!" she said, stepping outside. She was wearing pyjamas and a night cap.

Mohaki skidded to a halt, almost running into Kim, with Frojinza right behind him. Synexz padded up, much more graceful than the others.

Arytil dusted herself off, gritting her teeth. "Now, you little freak, give me the Black Vortex!" She prepared to lunge on Keiroth.

Kim raised an eyebrow. "The Black what?"

"The Black Vortex!" shrieked Arytil. She turned to Kim. "I have flown my tail off to find that thing tonight, and I'm not gonna stop now!"

     "Uhm, okay," Kim said, puzzled.

     "Now, as I was saying-"

"Pleeeeeese Kim lemme into the castle!" Keiroth cried, pulling on Kim's pant leg.

"What, and let you run around in there like a bunch of-"

Arytil snapped. She lunged for Keiroth, who darted into the castle through Kim's legs, screaming. Frojinza followed her, like always, and soon Mohaki and Synexz had pushed past Kim too.

"-like a bunch of maniacs..." she muttered, yawning. "That's it." Convinced that this was all a dream, she went back to sleep.

Keiroth panted, running up and down the stairs, through doors, and around Mohaki's invisible pits was tiring him out. He'd been running from Arytil and Frojinza for the past hour now, and he was running out of ideas.

Arytil was tired too. But she HAD to get the Vortex back! She just had too! Then she'd be rid of her sister Synexz for good.

Too exhausted to run anymore, Keiroth collapsed on the floor. It took a while for Arytil to find him in the large castle, but when she did, she was furious.

"Cough up the Vortex, or I'll have to go inside and get it!" she threatened.

"Nope," Keiroth said, curling into a protective ball. He tensed, waiting for Arytil to start ripping through him... But nothing even touched him. All he heard was a painful shriek. He uncurled, looking around.

Mohaki stood, holding a rather large glass jar. Inside was a screaming, scratching, frantic Arytil.

"Hey, lemme out of here, you no good excuse of a lizard!" Arytil exclaimed, banging on the glass.

"I don't think so," Mohaki said. From behind his back he produced a walkie-talkie, a direct communication with his sister, Shining_Safyre.

"Saf, you might wanna come over here and get your NSPA buddies to take care of this," he said. "Arytil's been pawning illegal mind-control devices."

"On my way, dude," Saf replied.

"But how did you know if the necklace is a mind-control device or not?" Keiroth stammered.

"I read her mind," Mohaki said simply.

"But why, Mohaki?" Synexz purred. "I thought you were one of those evil-type people."

"On a good night I am," Mohaki said. "But then again, this night was particularly bad, so it gets all switched around."

Frojinza, who had been watching senselessly, now squeaked and ran off. Syn made an attempt to catch her, but it failed and she got away. No matter; she was nothing without Arytil to guide her.

A Halloween Aisha came up the stairs, covered in flour. "Will someone please tell me why a bag of flour just hit me in the face?!" she shouted, waving her paws in anger. "Mohaki, I trust this was your doing..."

"Sorry about that," he said, looking as sorry as possible. He handed Arytil-in-a-jar to Safyre.

"I never expected you to do anything good, Mohaki," came a voice from down the stairs. "But I guess I was wrong."

Mohaki looked down in surprise to see Snicker standing there.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, descending down the stairs.

"I heard Saf get out of bed and tailed her here," Snicker said. "And since you weren't back yet, I figured something was up."

Soon they were all chattering about what had happened, and causing just enough racket to get Kim out of bed again.

     "Hello?" she called. "Who's there?"

     "Hey Kim!" said Snicker, waving.

"Wait a second... I'm still dreaming, aren't I?" Kim rubbed her eyes. "Why is everyone in the castle at three o'clock in the mornin'?"

"Uh... Kim, you are dreaming," Saf said. "You should go back to sleep."

Kim shrugged. "Okay." She turned around and went back to bed.

Safyre sighed. "We'd better get out of here before we call too much attention to this," she said, leading everyone out of the castle.

On the way out, Keiroth tugged at Mohaki's tail. "Mohaki?"

     Mohaki turned around. "What?"

"Does this mean that your not gonna be mean to me anymore?"

Mohaki thought about it for a moment. "Let me see... No!" And with a graceful flick of his tail, he sent Keiroth tumbling into an invisible hole.

The brotherly-fighting-type relationship between Positive and Negative continues... for now.

The End

Epilogue: This adventure convinced Keiroth to become a part of the Neopian Special Protection Agency along with Shining_Safyre, who was already a member. Frojinza hasn't been seen since that day, and Arytil is currently in a Mental Hospital with her brother RattleBone, getting anger management help.
