The Name Game
PET CENTRAL - Last time I checked, Neopia had over 65 MILLION pets. Just think
about how many that is for a minute. Let's say you went into Neopets and created
a new pet every hour. If you did that every day, so at the end of a day you
had 24 new pets, how long do you think it would take you to get that many? A
year? A century? Well, assuming you didn't take any hours off to eat or sleep,
it would take you over 7,000 years to get 65 million pets.
So yes, that's a lot of pets. But so what? There's always room for new pets!
Don't worry, I'm not going to start saying some pets should be deleted. What
the problem is, the way I see it, is that 65 million pets means 65 million names.
And coming up with 65 million names would be pretty hard, I can tell you. A
lot of the good names were taken long ago, so now people are starting to resort
to either sticking a load of numbers on the end, like Moonbeam1294320, or more
"creative" names like old_fayrt. (NB this is just an example, so if your pet
is really called old_fayrt please don't neomail me to complain. Or sue.)
The number-names aren't too bad--at least you can shorten them to just 'Moonbeam',
as long as the owner of the real Moonbeam doesn't complain. I do this myself--one
of my pets is called "Swoop_2002neo" and the other is Mako15neo. But I don't
call them that- I just call them Swoop and Mako. But all those numbers make
it look pretty untidy, and sooner or later Neopia is going to run out of numbers.
And don't even get me started on those so-called creative names. I can only
feel the deepest sympathy for a pet that has to go through life with a name
like that. If I had a name like that I'd probably try to kill my parents as
revenge. Hm, so maybe that's why your pet's pointing that Attack Fork at you
That's the other problem with names, of course--you're stuck with them. Once
you've named a neopet there's no going back and changing it. So even if you
want to change your pet's name from old_fayrt to something more appropriate,
you can't. And of course if you adopt a pet from the Pound that has a stupid
name, you're stuck with that one as well.
I've been thinking about this for a while now, and I think I've finally hit
on a solution. Or at least, a partial solution. So here's my idea...
I think that every Neopet should have TWO names, which would both appear on
their reference page (or whatever that page is called). One name would be their
official name, the name they were given when they were born. This would be like
when dogs are given a pedigree name that they need to use for competitions and
official purposes. But the owners are free to call the dog whatever they want.
So this would be a neopet's second name- their nickname. This could be anything
at all- it wouldn't matter if it was the same as another pet's, because the
official name would be different and that's what counts. And of course you would
be able to change the nickname, so there would be no more having to call your
Of course doing this would mean a lot of work for the Neopets team, and they
might even have to take the site down for a while to sort it out. But don't
you think it's worth it, if poor old_fayrt can have a new name?
