Neopian Physics by child_dragon | |
THE STRANGE LABORATORY - Recently, I have stumbled upon one of life's great
mysteries. It came rather unexpectedly, while listening to my physics teacher,
of all places. My teacher is a wonderful person, funny, interesting, and bearing
a very scary resemblance to Al_the_Chia.
While reflecting upon both of their tendencies to use the word, "piffle", my
mind drifted to physics and Neopia, specifically, does Neopia abide by the same
laws that Earth does? The answer has to be a resounding no. (Please note that
some of these calculations may be off or flat-out wrong. I haven't studied mechanical
physics since last year.)
For example, let's take my Eyrie, Un-eairkagh. He weighs 129 lbs., or 58,513
grams. Now, for any creature to fly, they must be able to, on take-off, exceed
the pull of gravity, which is 9.8 meters per second squared. I'm going to take
a rule of my physics teacher here, which is, "when asked nicely, gravity will
round itself to ten." There. Therefore, to fly, he must, in the first second
of takeoff, be able to reach an acceleration of over 10 m/s². While standing
on the ground, Un-eairkagh exerts a downwards force of 585,130, meaning he must
exert a force greater than 585,130 with his wings, which is a lot of
force. Whether or not it is possible for a creature to exert that much force
using wings, I honestly do not know. I highly doubt it though.
Secondly, the Battledome is also a source of great puzzlement. The Conservation
of Energy Law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, merely changed
from one form to the other. So let's take Un-eairkagh again, who has the Heal
ability. When he uses this ability his hit points regenerate. Now, let's look
at this like a physicist would. F¹ + F²= F³ - according to the
above-stated law. So, if Heal= F¹ and Hit points = F³, then what's
F²? There has to be a third variable, meaning a source that Heal
converts into Hit points. You can't argue that they come from thin air, because
if that was the case, all these abilities being used would soon convert all
our oxygen into hit points and such, and we'd be left with very overworked trees.
All right, I imagine I lost half of you there, and the other half is looking
at me like I'm a lunatic. So, here's my final theory, which solves all problems
relating to NeoPets and physics. Magic. The Faeries use it, the abilities resemble
it, and it's a nice tidy source to stick in as the third variable for the conservation
of energy. Of course, being merely a confused high school student, I am probably
terribly wrong, but it's the best guess I can make. So go home and try not to
think about how every time your Eyrie jumps off a cliff edge, he/she might not
be able to support his/her weight…
Author's note: If any of the math/physics in this article is wrong, my
apologies. If any of it confused you, again, my apologies. It confused me too.
Now I'm off to get extra help from my Al_the_Chia twin teacher. |
