A Grundo's Guide to the Storytelling Competition

by too_kule

DEEP CATACOMBS - Mmmmm, phear coffee... it's just so delicious! The phear juice in it makes it so tangy. You might want to add a little sugar into it though. According to a Skeith I was talking to the other day, the cup that it comes in also tastes good...you might not want to try that though. OK, I know what you're thinking: Why is he still talking about coffee...AGAIN!?! Well the good thing about coffee is it contains so much caffeine that it makes staying up all night a breeze! I do a lot of writing for the Poetry Contest and the Neopian Times so I need the energy. I've been up late trying...trying to get my story into the Storytelling Competition! But I know a way, I write a guide and use that guide to help me! Flawless plan, right?

For those aspiring writers out there who have that same dream to get into the Storytelling Competition, listen up. For those who have, read some tips of mine and maybe you can laugh at my technique. I've never won it before, but how hard could it be.

Description - For those who don't know, this is the Storytelling Competition. On Monday The Neopets Team starts off by writing the beginning to the story. Every day a couple of submissions (submitted by Neopet users like you) make it in. The story keeps on going until Friday when it's finished. Simple, right? Well with over 40,000,000 people on Neopets, the odds of getting your submission in aren't good... they aren't good at all.

Size - OK, here's how to write the basic body of it. If you look at some of the old Storytelling Competitions, you'll see they are only about ten lines. Now...they are considerably more than that. You have to really write to get your submission in. They should be pretty big (in the neighbourhood of 50 lines) unless they're exceptionally good. But that doesn't happen too often.

Basic Tips - So you know what to do, know all you need to know is how to do it. Follow the plot, if it starts out talking about somebody doing a quest for Jhudora don't blab about coffee... that's what I do. Just follow the plot. Of course, adding a few small plot twists of your own isn't a bad idea, it keeps the story interesting. Make it possible though, if the characters is in the Post Office one second, don't make him in the Grundo's Warehouse the next. You need the extra twists because lots of entries are submitted each day so The Neopets Team probably wouldn't notice it unless it was really good.

Extra Stuff - Are plot twists really enough? You may think your submission is as great as anything, but it might need a little... extra stuff. Enhanced vocabulary and humour are the sorts of things that separate the really good submissions from the not-as-good ones. If you can think of more than one submission to enter, send them all in! It's just increasing your odds of. If you don't get in the first time, try again! Your first couple of tries may have lacked something, but just keep on trying. You never know, you could win the second time even if you didn't win the first. One last thing, copy and paste your submission into another writing program that has the Spell Check and/or Grammar Check in it. It could pick out some of the mistakes you missed.

Wow, I'm a great guide writer! Using this guide, I could probably win the contest and so could you. Remember, you won't win if you don't try. Well I've got to get down to Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe and stock up for tonight. This is too_kule signing off for the night. Bye!

Disclaimer: In the Catacombs, you see the group of Aishas watching the fire inside of the Deep Catacombs. Do not ever light a fire inside of a building, especially one that is home to millions of NP in art.
