Potato Counter: Innocent Fun or Something Sinister?

by oh_so_evil

MERIDELL - As I played Potato Counter the last few weeks, I've started to question the seemingly innocence of the Kacheek in charge of the game. Where exactly does he get all those potatoes? Where does he get the money to give as rewards? Why does he want us to count his potatoes anyway? These questions began to drive me crazy so I decided to form my own theory about the mysterious little potato Kacheek in Meridell.

Now, it's plainly obvious that the residents of Meridell are mainly farmers and farmers do not make much in the way of profit. Yet, there's a little Kacheek that is able to have thousands of potatoes a day ready for counting. I decided to question the farmer Wocky with the marrow, who ran a nice business selling his overgrown marrows. He was at first reluctant to say anything but after I complemented him on his wonderful gardening skills and asked for a recipe for marrow pie, he was willing to talk. Here's a transcript of the conversation:

Me: So tell me,what do you know of the potato Kacheek.

Wocky: Well...I know that I don't trust him. There's something strange about him. You know how all Kacheeks are supposed to be very shy? Well, this Kacheek loves to have people around him. He always has visitors.

Me: What kind of visitors?

Wocky: There's all the Neopians who come to count potatoes of course but then there's these creatures that visit him late at night. I was outside one night, when I couldn't sleep, watering Ol' Bessie, when I couldn't help but overhear some people talking.

Me: What did they say??????

Wocky: Now don't rush me!

Me: Sorry.

Wocky: No problem. They mentioned something about a black market. Since then I haven't trusted that potato Kacheek at all!

After this important piece of information, I knew I had discovered the truth behind Potato Counter. The game was invented as a clever disguise for the Potato Smuggling Ring! The PSR smuggles thousands of potatoes everyday on the black market and uses Meridell as their headquarters. The Potato Counter acts as a way to get rid of "illegal" potatoes. Part of the profit the Kacheek makes he uses as rewards so that he appears to be gracious and kind.

I hurried over to Potato Counter to see if my theory was true. As soon as I walked in, the evil Kacheek quickly told me "Arr, you can only guess me potatoes three times a day!" Ah ha! The truth has come out. The yellow Kacheek is in fact... a pirate from Smuggler's Cove on Krawk Island! He may dress like a Meridell peasant, but he doesn't talk like one. Only a true pirate would say "Arr" and "me potatoes."

Of course when I started shouting this, the Kacheek promptly told me to get out and started throwing potatoes at me. When I awoke a few hours later from a potato-induced coma, I knew that I must spread the truth. Meridell is not as innocent as it seems and any game that involves counting-for-cash should never, I repeat, NEVER be trusted!
