KRAWK ISLAND - I first noticed it when Carnari pulled me into the living room
of our NeoHome. Malthias was curled up on the couch with the most recent edition
of The Neopian Times and his Black Mirror, sniffling. After a little bit of
coaxing to get him to look up and blow his nose, I asked him to tell me what
was wrong.
His question was heartbreaking. "Kade? Is something... wrong with me, or us?"
It took me a few minutes to assure him that he was a perfectly normal Krawk,
with healthy green scales and a nice, toothy smile. Carnari, having 'owned'
him when he was a petpet, piped in with the next question. "OK, silly. What
would make you think that something is wrong with you.. or us, for that matter?"
Malthais held up the paper. It was full of Krawk falsehoods and mishaps. "Some
people are asking if we're worth having around, as we're expensive as petpets
and really rare as pets." The black Lupe knew better than to laugh at the comic
entitled "Say
NO to KRAWK".
Looking through the articles that the little Krawk showed me, I was amazed
at all the inaccuracies and contradictions in them. As I told him, not all writers
who sent articles into The Neopian Times knew what they were talking about,
or were completely serious. Now, I'm going to tell you readers the same things
that I told Malthaias.
#1. Krawk owners are not all greedy millionaires with sprawling
NeoHomes and dozens of Hidden Tower artifacts. I don't know how this misconception
got started, but it's wrong. Completely. The most Neopoints I've ever had in
my bank account and wallet combined was 400,000. It took me 11 months to build
up that much, because I'm an 'older Neopian,' and go to college.
#2. Krawks are nasty Neopets, and bite a lot. They're clumsy, stupid,
ugly, (insert any other unkind comment here), etc. Again, untrue. Krawks
are friendly, fun-loving creatures that usually enjoy playing in water and/or
sand. If you want a nasty Neopet, go get a Grarrl Battlemaster, or a Grundo
Trooper.
#3. Since Krawks are so rare, you must have paid a lot to get one!
Nope, sorry. I bought Malthais for Carnari back when Krawks first came out as
petpets. I had heard of the upcoming Krawk Island, and thought that having a
Krawk petpet would be fun and cute. Two Krawks cost me 25,000 Neopoints I made
one into Malthias, when I could, and gave the other to a friend of mine. (No,
he's not selling it. It belongs to a pet of his.)
#4. What's so magical about that Fungus Cave? Nobody really
knows. It's just the greenish-grey, icky-smelling stuff that grows there, that
turns Krawk petpets into full-grown Krawk pets.
#5. How soon did you get Malthias after the Fungus Cave was announced?
Immediately, as soon as I figured out how.
Assorted Facts Malthais was the 97th Krawk to be turned into a pet. He's still
looking for friends, and has a huge collection of wooden spoons.
There were over 128,000 Lennys when the Krawks were introduced, which gives
each Krawk (currently) a total of roughly 160 spoons. (Multiplied, of course,
by how few Krawks there were. Malthias has nearly 20 times that many.)
Krawks usually like swimming, and don't like fire, as it dries out
their scales.
Malthias doesn't like playing NeoQuest. He likes to watch Carnari play.
Overall, I hope this has set more minds at ease about the Krawk Neopets and
their owners. If you have any questions (not begging) or comments (more info
on Krawks, or yours, perhaps), feel free to Neomail
me. I hope to put more information about Krawks in a future column. |
