It's happened before to everyone before. You're searching through the shop wizard for the perfect buy. As soon as the page comes up you can tell that this definitely is a bargain. The item is thousands below the Shop Wizard Average. But the shop is slow in loading. There's a flashing background, loud music, tons of dolls and banners, decorations everywhere. I've seen shops with real items that are clickable but can't be bought because owners messed up the HTML, shops where items were up at the top of the screen. I've had shops freeze and crash my computer. To make a long story short, I have seen tons of HTML mess-ups that don't even allow you to buy items from the shop. What could have been the perfect buy, you can't even purchase. What should have made money for the shop owner didn't. But surely everyone has the right to put HTML in his or her shop and decorate it. But what's going too far?

The first thing to remember when you are decorating your shop is to remember what's necessary, and what isn't. For example, dolls. If people wanted to see girls wearing clothes, they would go to the mall. What about music? If people wanted to hear music they would turn on their stereo or Walkman. But still its good to have a nice looking shop. But no one really cares what your shop looks like. If I want a codestone, I am going to buy the cheapest one, not the one from the shop that looks nice. So technically, you don't NEED to have a nice shop to make money. But… okay, I am contradicting myself. The main thing to keep in mind is you don't NEED a nice shop to make money, although having a nice looking shop conveys a nicer image.

Now we are going into what is too much. As you can probably tell, I think having dolls and music in your shop is useless. But no one has a problem with say a guild banner, a nice background, etc., but that's about as far as decorations should go. Some people will undoubtedly complain that they think their entire puff collection, the twenty five different banners with their quiz results, should belong where people see them, in their shop. I suggest that people set aside a Neopets pet's page for this purpose. If you want others to see this page you could make a link of it from your shop. That way you won't clog up space, and your shop will load faster, and your items will most likely be sold faster as well.

Why decorate your shop? What's the point? When I asked this question on the help board, no one could give a strong solid answer. Most people said because its boring blank, and they think customers are attracted to a colourful shop, and that they are more likely to buy from that shop if it looks nice. I know this isn't the case with me, but maybe it is the case with others. Others said to express themselves. The newbies liked experimenting with HTML, and somehow were proud when stuff actually showed up. (I've noticed also that its newbies that mostly have a cluttered shop with tons of decorations, while older Neopians don't as often. Maybe as they get more experienced with Neopets and HTML, their adopted pet sea monkeys in their shop or whatever don't impress them anymore.) Overall they liked having a place where they could convey their personality to others where people would undoubtedly see it.
