The Aggressive Block

by philodice

Shields can be an essential part of winning a battle, but I think of every time I use a shield as a missed opportunity to deal damage. To work effectively, a shield must be designed to block the same type of damage dealt to you in that round of combat. For instance, using a soul stone when your opponent hits you with a rainbow cannon will not protect you from the water damage at all. If you cannot predict what type of damage your opponent will use next, the many shields the Battlepedia has to offer are useless.

Let me introduce the term "Aggressive Block". It is used in combat systems when a fighter tries to block an incoming blow. Instead of just taking it on a shield, she strikes back, hoping to deflect the blow by doing damage to the other fighter at the same time. There are many weapons that are overlooked and under priced which fall into the aggressive block category. The best thing about them is, if your opponent does something completely unpredictable, you never waste a turn 'just blocking' or miss an opening to inflict some damage.

Weapons must have offensive and defensive icons to be considered useful in an aggressive block. These are some of my favourite weapons. As you can see, several items are well within the affordable range even if you are new to Neopets.

Item Damage Defence Cost
Dirty Snow 2 earth, 2 air 2 earth, 2 air Below 2k NP
Fire Snow 2 light, 2 fire 2 dark, 2 fire Below 3k NP
Moon Staff 2 light, 2 earth All dark Below 7k NP
Radioactive Snow 2 dark, 2 earth 2 earth, 2 light Below 8K NP
Tiki Amulet 3 earth, 3 light 3 earth Above 100K NP
Ice Dagger 3 water, + 3 phys. 1+2 dark, 1+2 phys. Above 100K NP

Now it is time for the demonstration, which my very wonderful pets are going to provide. Sundari Radha loves battling. She has built her pet page into a battle tip club for beginners and small pets, which she calls the ARC Angels Feather Weight Fighters. So give a warm welcome to the Captain of the FWF and her brave assistant.

A small but well armoured Cybunny hops into the battle arena and waves. "Hi, my name is Sundari Radha My brother DragonSlashX (Dragon for short) is going to throw snowballs and caustic potions at me while I, well, beat him senseless."

A blue Shoyru shrugs and steps into the arena, a large sack of snowballs in hand.

"I'm going to start with a Caustic Potion and a Poison Snowball," Dragon leaps at his sister, attempting to rub her face in snow. The Cybunny has dodged the attack, and blocked the damage with her Tiki Amulet and Ice Dagger.

"Ha, I only took four damage, and you took eleven damage, Snow Face!" Sundari_Radha laughs but Dragon looks a little queasy. "Oh, Uh…Dragon doesn't feel like fighting anymore, folks, so it looks like our demonstration is over." Dragon drinks a pale elixir behind her back, and looks much healthier. He lobs a caustic potion at her back, and she turns just in time to whack it aside with her moon staff and some dirty snow. Dragon lets out a moan and falls over. "As I was saying, today's demonstration is over. I'd better take Dragon back home."

Well, I hope you liked my demonstration, but I'd better go and get some healing potions out for my pets. If you have any questions about this article, just Neomail me or go to Sundari_Radha's petpage. She loves visitors.
