The Comprehensive Guide to Changing Your NeoPet

by miharu_shino

While reading through The Neopian Times, I have discovered several articles about how to change your pet one way or the other, but nothing sums it up in one handy dandy article useful to both newbies and experts. Thus, I have taken the action to compile everything I know about changing your NeoPets into one article to end the hours of reading through back issues of The Neopian Times that tends to put a strain on a person's eyeballs.

Paint brushes

Paint brushes are probably the most well known way to change your pet's colour. Each NeoPet is available in different colours, all of which are listed in the Rainbow Pool. However, the downside to paint brushes is that some of them are rather expensive. Lost Desert and Faerie paint brushes, for example, are rather expensive right now. Still, if you want to use a paint brush to paint your pet, some good deals can be found. Christmas Paint brushes are rather inexpensive, and I recently acquired a White Paint brush for a reasonable price.

Paint brushes can be acquired through random events or through the Shop Wizard.

Potions

There are three types of potions that will change your pet: morphing, transmogrification, and secret. Morphing potions will not only change pet colour, but species as well. For example, using a Red Pteri Morphing Potion on your NeoPet will change him or her into a Red Pteri. Transmogrification potions will turn your pet into a mutant version of the specific morphing potion (i.e. using a Kacheek Transmogrification Potion on your NeoPet will turn it into a Mutant Kacheek). Strange Potions change your pet's gender. Both morphing potions and transmogrification potions are available from Kauvara's magic shop and the Shop Wizard. In the past, I also received a transmogrification potion as a random event. Currently, as far as I know, Strange Potions are only available through the Shop Wizard.

Magical Plushies

Magical plushies are another way to change both your pet's species and colour The nice thing about magical plushies is that after they are used, a nice toy is left over for your NeoPet to play with. Magical plushies are always labeled as such and in the item lookup window also have a warning stating that they will change your pet. Any plushie that does not state they will change your pet can be assumed to be a normal plushie. Magical plushies can be obtained by getting a certain score on games like Meerca Chase, Pterattack, or Chomby and the Fungus Balls. They can also be purchased by doing a search on the Shop Wizard.

Lab Ray

The lab ray can change your pet in many ways. I have heard of colour changes, species changes, and even gender changes. Access to the lab ray comes at quite a cost, though. Before you can use it, you must find all the pieces to the secret laboratory map. If your bank account is up to the cost, finding all the pieces once will be enough to guarantee access to the lab ray once a day, every day. The lab ray also effects pet's stats, so a colour or species change may not be the first thing to happen to your NeoPet.

The Rainbow Fountain

In the past, the Rainbow Fountain was opened for limited amounts of times. By acquiring a certain number of tickets, you could change your pet's colour, pet's species, or both. Currently, the Rainbow Fountain is dried up. If it should ever resurface again, getting a few tickets could be a worthwhile investment.

Name Changes

Currently, there are no name change features. If you are unhappy with your NeoPet's name, the only option is to have a personal nickname for it. Nicknames come especially in hand for pets adopted from the pound.

Well, I hope you found this comprehensive guide helpful. I'm not exactly an expert, but if you have a question you can Neomail me and I'll try my best to answer your question. You might also find some of the past issues of the Neopian Times to have extensive articles on one particular way to change your pet that are full of helpful information.
