NeoDon'ts of Neopia

by wingz2firefly

There are so many lists of things you absolutely must do in Neopia, ranging from on a daily basis to well beyond that. But what about all those little things you probably shouldn't do? There are quite a few of those, too, and if you make such Newbie mistakes, then you'll probably be unhappy with your Neopian life later and just wander away from the community. I've done my best to compile the top don'ts to save Newbies from such unhappiness.

1) Don't Name Your Pet After Its Current Species or Colour
Why not? OrangePeo the Yellow Peophin is so cute! But what if OrangePeo becomes a Faerie Peophin, or even a Faerie Kyrii? Now you're stuck with a Kyrii with a bizarre name. If you're a perfectionist, this might really start to eat away at your nerves until you finally get rid of OrangePeo. Non-specific names such as Shimmeraga, CathiSarahLee, and FireThunderWaterfall are much better. If you plan on using your pet as a Lab rat, gender-specific names might also frustrate you, so keep it simple.

2) Don't Beg for NP or Food or Other Favours from Your Neofriends
This is a big one. I've made friends with several Newbies that, every time they come into contact with me, beg for NP or food. Of course, since I've been around a while, I can provide the food. Why not? Omelettes are free and Anna only eats so much. But it's the NP-begging I can't stand. I refuse to buy some worthless item at an inflated price just so that they can buy that new plushie for their four starving pets which are being fed out of my good luck. Food is easy to come by, but what most Newbies are really after is some good amount of spending money so that they can buy pretty toys and shiny snowballs for their pets. Go play games. Everyone is perfectly capable of making at least a little money at Mia's Makeover. Omelette is free and even the ol' Tombola man occasionally doles out chow.

3) Don't Adopt More Pets Than You Can Handle
This is a huge one. I know that the Lupe was cute, and so was the Korbat, and that you just couldn't live without the Lenny, too, and then, somehow, you found yourself adopting a Kougra, but, honestly! If you're a well-established Neopian and you adopt four or more pets over time, that's fine. You can probably handle them after you have some NP stashed in the Bank and some food in your Safety Deposit Box. But most Newbies just rush out and adopt the four cutest pets. Then they all get hungry. I know it's awful; I did it myself with four of my older pets on my first account which I no longer use. Now I'm down to one pet; one well-fed, fairly strong pet with a good PetPet. That's another thing. PetPets are extremely fun, even more so now than they used to be because there's a huge selection and quite a few of them can be painted. However, they cost money, and pretty soon you've spent all your money on that adorable Blooky and have no money for food. If you already have too many pets, just put a few in the pound and keep track of their names. You can track their progress later when you look them up and know that they're safe. It'll be easier on you and on them. Adopt responsibly and think of money as the key to the happiness of all of your pets, because it is.

4) Don't Forget to Create a Nest Egg
You might've heard of a nest egg before. It's a little sum of money that's being saved up for special occasions, disasters, etc., at least to my understanding. All Neopians should have one. Start by opening an account with the Bank. Be sure to collect interest each day, if nothing else. Any extra money not spent should be placed in the Bank so that interest can be collected on it and you can slowly make more money. This way you have some money for emergencies. Be diligent in saving and, someday, even though it doesn't seem like it'll ever happen, you'll have enough money for those really expensive foods and plushies you've always dreamed about.

5) Be Careful with Changing Pets' Colours and Species
There's more to this than just names. It has to do with NP. Lots of NP- tons of NP! I, myself, have wasted vast amounts of NP on Paint Brushes. When Anna was a Kau, I painted her Cloud... and shortly after turned her into a Fire Lupess! What a terrible waste that was! And then I changed her to Starry using the moneysaving method- the wonderful Rainbow Fountain. If you must change a pet, wait until it opens up again and use it. It's the only way to go. I also wasted money on my old Kyrii, LiquidSoap. I adopted her as a Blumaroo from the pound and then, within half an hour and many NPs later, she was a Disco Kyrii! That was also a waste- I trained her for a while (also a waste) and then gave her away. Never, ever spend money on a pet unless you intend to keep it forever! Don't forget to plan carefully, too, for the new colour and species of your pet. Make sure you're happy with it before the change. If you don't, it'll haunt you later, I promise.

Those are the top five don'ts of Neopia (from my point of view, of course). They should be paid at least some attention, or otherwise you'll probably be bothered by your mistakes later. I know I was =^^=;;;
