Mystery Island's Mystic: A Guide to the Old Guy's Predictions by psykit_feline | |
Off the coast of Mystery
Island, at the top, left-hand corner of the Mystery Island's layout,
is an isolated little piece of land, home to the island's fortune teller. We
go in, listen to what he has to say, then usually leave with word like "fake"
or "phony" stamped across his face in our memory. Few do take what
he says seriously, and there is only one statement he makes that we are ALL
inclined to believe.
"You will have disappointing luck in the food shop."
I'm not saying that we must always believe him. I do grant that a great majority
of his predictions seem pretty pessimistic, save for perhaps one or two. Anyway,
soon enough, I will help you solve some of the 'riddles' that are his predictions.
After that, it's up to you whether you want to believe him or not...
The mystic's predictions are like horoscopes and the prediction of prophets.
They are very general, and thus can be applied to a great many situations. They
do not always happen literally. In fact, it is usually metaphorical. To understand
his predictions, you must keep an open mind. Here are a couple of examples.
"You will face danger in the Haunted Woods."
This seems pretty straightforward. Upon hearing this, people probably just
shrug and say, "Okay, I won't go to the Haunted Woods today." But take heed,
the prediction may involve more than just the Haunted Woods itself. It could
mean anything that is related to the Haunted Woods, anything spooky or to do
with the supernatural, or anything big and scary. The overall meaning is not
to take any risks. When I learnt this, it was too late. My pets and I were wondering
around inside the Snowager's cave, not being able to decide whether to steal
anything or not, and then one of them stepped on a piece of ice that shattered
with a sound loud enough to wake someone in the next country. The Snowager promptly
woke up, saw us and decided to give us some rather unhealthy versions of ice
popsicles.
"You will accidentally step on and crunch a cool weapon in the food shop."
This one is quite simple to understand. You will do something stupid. By accident
or otherwise is another and not so important matter. Once, my pets found an
Air Faerie in a bottle on the ground, and I decided to sell it at 90 NP in my
shop as I always do (Yes. Believe it or not, I do sell them at that price if
I ever get one). Naturally, it was gone in a few minutes, then the Earth Faerie
turned up and asked me to find... an Air Faerie. Back then, I wasn't used to
turning down quests. I asked my brother to search for an Air Faerie, and not
wanting to lose anything on his part, he charged me for it at the same price
he got it...a couple of thousand neopoints.
"You will suddenly cease to have the ability to hop."
This means that stuff you usually find a "piece of cake" will suddenly
become much harder for awhile. The Meerca will crash into the wall or a red
Negg every five seconds, the Gormball will develop favoritism, and Capara from
Neocheat will suddenly have the ability to read your mind.
I'm sure you can figure out a few ways to try and lower chances of the predictions
from coming true. One is by visiting the Island
Mystic 3 more times. This is the myth/belief of threefold cancellation,
but the Island Mystic will not be affected by the prediction's backfire times
3 (no point grumbling, it's better than the prediction(s) sticking to you.),
instead, the prediction will be returned to the fabric of Fate and be neutralised,
with some chances of it resulting in 3 times as much good luck. If all else
fails, logout for awhile. Worry not, the predictions do not follow you beyond
neopia.
Now, it is up to you whether to take heed of the Island Mystic's predictions
or not. Funny how people either do not believe bad news but put all their faith
into good news, while others do the complete opposite. It is best we value all
predictions as equal in probability. Nevertheless, whatever decision you make,
remind yourself that this is only a game.
