One Man's Treasure is Another Man's Space Debris

by potebrigitte

Sure, the Space Map is easy to get, the only big ticket item in Neopia that’s free to all for minimum effort, but is it worth cashing in? Or should it just be sold in your store? What can you get from that Map anyway? Well, hopefully in this article I’ll answer some of your questions and help you decide whether to sell the Space Map or cash it in.

If you’re like me you’ve gotten some pretty lame items from the Space Faerie, once I got Usuki Sunglasses two times in a row! I just about gave up on the Space Map when my friend ended up getting a Blue Scorchstone from the Map, and my interest was more than renewed. I decided to conduct a little mini scientific experiment to try and get a more accurate sample of the Space Map prizes. I bought 10 Maps and cashed them in all around the same time, they cost about 30,000 NP maximum, about 28,000 NP on average. Here is a list of what I got each time, keeping in mind that the points shown are after they were doubled, that the prices of the items were average on the Wizard when I got them, and that one of my pets got a level each time. Okay, here we go!

#1: 11,384 NP
Item 1: Dark Chocolate Kougra
Item 2: Red Pteri Keyring
Item 3: Fly and Maggot Pizza
Total Value: 11,814 NP Worth it? No way!

#2: 12,666 NP
Item 1: Reptillior
Item 2: Pikis
Item 3: Guardian of Spectral Magic (trading card)
Total Value: 29,356 NP
Worth it? Definitely! Especially since I love PetPets.

#3: 7,842 NP
Item 1: Witchcraft Spells
Item 2: Flightning Bug
Item 3: Tyrannian Skeith Plushie
Total Value: 31,942 NP
Worth it? Yes! I was especially excited about the book, looks like I’m on a roll!

#4: 9,283 NP
Item 1: Evil Sloth Clone #32 (trading card)
Item 2: Cube-Shaped Orange
Item 3: Funky Diva Usuki
Total Value: 18,133 NP
Worth it? It falls a bit short of the price of the map, but I like Usukis, so this lot gets a thumbs up too.

#5: 12,860 NP
Item 1: Hot Dog Sundae Deluxe
Item 2: Healing Potion XIII
Item 3: Bubblisaur
Total Value: 18,110 NP
Worth it? Not really worth the cost, but not disappointing.

#6: 9,865 NP
Item 1: Chia Bomber Attack Plushie
Item 2: Orange Chocolate Lupe
Item 3: Blue Toobers
Total Value: 11,065 NP
Worth it? Boo! This was not worth it at all…

#7: 8,539 NP
Item 1: Poison Snowball Wand
Item 2: Rainbow Usul Plushie
Item 3: Song Flowers
Total Value: 19,689 NP
Worth it? While it technically doesn’t compare to the cost, it was pretty cool to see the Snowball Wand.

#8: 13,119 NP
Item 1: Silver Arm Plate
Item 2: Puce Elixir Item
3: Tornado in a Bottle
Total Value: 20,969 NP
Worth it? This comes pretty close to being worth it, but that’s only thanks to the generous Neopoint contribution by the Space Faerie.

#9: 12,717 NP
Item 1: Caring for Your Neopet 3
Item 2: Chocolate Aisha Ears
Item 3: Mint Chocolate Moehog
Total Value: 16,447 NP
Worth it? The Neopoints were good but the items were a total let down.

#10: 7,256 NP
Item 1: Princess Vyssa (trading Card)
Item 2: Stone Arm Shield Item
3: A Flotsam Christmas
Total Value: 10,531 NP
Worth it? Burn! It looks like tenth time is definitely not the charm.

Overall, I learned a lot for my little experiment, that dreams really can come true with the help of the Space Map. But I also learned that investing 300,000 NP of your bank account in them is not a very wise business decision. My advice to you is to do the Treasure Hunt daily, collect your Space Map and turn it in rather than sell it. Because while it might not always be worth as much as you would have made off it in the store, if you get it for free you will always make a profit. And who knows? That Scorchstone may be lurking just around the corner of the next Space Map.
