Transcriber's notes: As my own pet Moehog, Raziel_Draven, has pointed
out to me, the Moehogs are an often overlooked species...
...one of the least numerous species in Neopia, it's often easy to forget that
Moehogs even exist! The purpose of transcribing this book is to bring well-deserved
attention to this intelligent, friendly species.
History
Moehog's were originally bred in the mountainous regions of Neopia Central as
a type of livestock. They were forced to be pack-mules for some lazy Skeiths,
which created a lasting enmity between the two species. Moehog's were very intelligent
for pack-animals, however, often outweighing their owners in terms of smarts,
and eventually they began to escape from their cages and prisons to make lives
for themselves. The Moehogs who had escaped flocked together and formed small,
all-Moehog towns down in the then unpopulated flat lands, and had soon spread
to many other worlds such as Terror Mountain and Tyrannia. When humans began
flocking to Neopia in search of pets, Moehogs saw that most of the new owners
were much kinder then their previous Skeith masters, and they joined with the
pets that were willing to adopt themselves out. Since the Moehog's weren't as
'cute' or 'cool-looking' as many of the other pets, though, the reception by
the humans was not as warm as it had been for some of the other species. To
this day, the Moehog remains one of the less popular pets in Neopia, and for
this reason the Moehog's have continued to maintain their all-Moehog towns,
havens for the young ones who don't have the fortune of finding a home.
Appearance
Moehog's look rather like a mix between a wart hog and a hyena, in my opinion.
Their heads are rather large, nearly equaling their body in size, and out of
each side of the mouth a pearly white tusk protrudes. This tusk can often turn
yellow from lack of care, and there are a few Moehog's who are either missing
a tusk or bearing a broken tusk. Their back legs are shorter then their front
legs, which is one of the things that gives them a similarity to hyenas, as
is their short tail that ends in a tassel of hair. A large tuft of hair runs
all the way down their back, from their forehead to the base of their tail.
This tuft bears many similarities to a mohawk, which is one of the places that
the Moehog’s name was derived from.
Popularity
The Moehog is, after the Lenny, the least popular pet in Neopia, which
is why their so often over looked. While the Lenny often gets attention from
the fact that it bears the dreaded Wooden Spoon, the Moehog doesn’t even have
this claim to fame. Though the Moehog is a kind, loyal NeoPet, it’s often passed
over for a cuter or tougher looking pet.
Musical Affinity
One of the things that not many humans know about Moehogs is the fact that
they have an awesome affinity for music…they’re often able to learn instruments
in several months, as compared to several years by many of the other NeoPets.
It’s awkward for them to learn some instruments because of their hoofed feet,
but most Moehog’s have wonderful voices, particularly the males.
Assumptions
Many assumptions are made about the Moehogs, either based on their appearance
or their lack of popularity. Some people think that Moehogs are geeks or bookworms
because many have very high IQ’s…but as with their musical affinity, almost
all Moehogs are born with IQ’s that are above average. Most of these NeoPets
are actually a far cry from being geeky, and if Neopians and other species would
simply give them a chance they would be able to see this.
Enmity
The only species that Moehogs have a natural enmity with are Skeiths because
of the way they were treated in their past. Though this enmity is almost as
severe as that between Lupes and Chias, many Neopian’s don’t know about it,
and don’t understand why many scuffles occur when Moehogs and Skeiths are forced
to spend time together.
