Deckball For Dummies
So, you want to win a Deckball trophy or maybe even a lot of Dubloons, but
you don't know how to do it? That Mirgle getting on your nerves? You want to
give him a good thrashing? Then you've come to the right place...
First things first... you have to enjoy the game, laugh off the goals against
you and, whatever you do, DON'T GET ANNOYED AT THE Mirgle! His cheeky grin pushes
many a soul over the edge to nervous breakdown state, and all sorts of hammering
the screen in frustration, but that doesn't help in any way. You may also damage
your Deckball hand, and we wouldn't want that to happen! I admit that it is
quite a difficult game to get the hang of, especially if you have a short temper,
but these little tips should give you some more confidence over your game.
Remember the three letters - F.A.F. (FIRST, ATTACK and FOLLOW THROUGH.)
You must try and always be first to hit the ball. This can be achieved by running
straight forwards when the ball is released and then, about a bird-and-a-half's
length from the halfway line, turning towards the direction which it is heading
in. This way, the Mirgle will have difficulty in taking a shot. Try to whack
the ball at an angle so that it can hit the wall and bounce into the goal. Don't
worry, this is not always achievable, but if you can score quickly then there
will be less chance of the Mirgle in the middle showing up. If possible, take
a straight shot for the goal, but beware, this tends to be slow, and Munk with
da Funk may turn around to send it spinning away from you!
You should try and attack most of the time, because the Mirgle is a bit dense
and sometimes has "spins" where he wonderingly goes around in circles. This
can be used to your advantage, as you can dive in and take a shot at the goal.
Also, he occasionally gets stuck in the bottom right hand corner--if you leave
him on his own for a few seconds, the ball goes right through him and he has
been known to whack it right into his own goal, with no help from the Pawkeet.
Always shoot at the middle of the goal, because even the tiniest touch on the
inside post and that ball will fly right back out, so take shots carefully.
It is also possible to hit the ball just ahead of the Mirgle near the wall,
so that he can give it an extra bit of speed, sending it soaring into the net.
Whenever possible, follow through your shots. Even if it LOOKS like they are
going in, you should either keep running behind it in case it hits the post
or the Mirgle tries to knock it sideways. Alternatively, you can hit the ball
and then "get in the way" of him, stopping him from getting anywhere near his
goal (he tries to take the glory of own goals sometimes). Be careful to aim
your shots accurately, and give the ball a nice safe journey to its goal.
So, to sum up your training, remember these basics:
1. Be sure to hit the ball first, so you have the upper hand right from the
start. Try and attack as much as possible, but if need be, defend your goal.
2. Practice - practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.
Make sure the ball is actually going into the net, even if it looks good.
3. Don't get easily annoyed at the gibbon! Let the Mirgle make the mistakes,
not you--it's him that's the stupid one. Don't send your score until you get
over ten goals--that way, you get 5 Dubloons.
