If you happened to look up at the sky in the Haunted Woods
on the 14 of the month of Hunting you would have seen a very peculiar sight. A
broom was floating in the sky. However, it was not the broom that was so peculiar.
No, it is a common fact that brooms are always seen in the sky of the Haunted
Woods since over two hundred witches and wizards take residence there. The thing
that actually was peculiar about the broom was that a neither a witch nor wizard
were riding it. The only thing on the broom was a furry, very discontented, black
Kadoatie.
It was a pitiful thing, the Kadoatie. Its fur stuck
out at odd angles, and its whiskers were bent. It was covered in Mootixes but
the thing did not care. No, it was focused on one thing and only one thing.
Fulfilling the potion so that she might become a witch again.
You see, if you have not already caught on, that
the Kadoatie had not always been a Kadoatie. In fact, only a week ago she had
been a very cheerful pink Zafara. She remembered how she had blissfully concocted
potions, cast spells, and had taken advantaged of being over a foot tall. Oh,
the good old days.
But now those times were over thanks to her ex-best
friend Mera, an extremely foolish starry Aisha.
***
She had invited a few of her friends (Mera included) over for Spooky Shakes
and Cauldron Soup. All had gone well, until she had gotten the brilliant idea
of, "Hey, why don't I do some tricks to impress my friends?" Worst idea, EVER.
The Zafara had then performed a few simple tricks
with her wand; flowers from thin air, a Snotbunny out of a hat, a banana into
a zeenana... simple, ordinary tricks. Then came the suggestion that changed
her life.
"Hey Midnight, why don't you brew a potion? I don't
know... to turn a Spyder into a Kadoatie or something. Please Midnight?" Mera
begged.
Midnight had been only too happy to oblige. In less
than five minutes, she had whipped up the potion.
The former Zafara regretted even now her carelessness.
One of the first rules of witchery is to NEVER make more of a potion than necessary.
It's even printed in big, black, bold letters and is underlined twice on the
first page of the book titled The Rules of Witchery. However, Midnight
had done just the opposite. She had made two doses, instead of the necessary
one. Then she thought it wouldn't matter, but how she regretted it later.
Midnight had dug under her cabinets to find a Spyder.
When she finally had, she poured two drops on it, and then set put the open
vial that stored the potion next to her cauldron soup.
They waited.
After ten seconds the Spyder started to glow, and
then it morphed into a black Kadoatie.
Midnight's friends clapped with enthusiasm as the
Zafara had taken her bows.
"Let's eat now!" a Halloween Usul that she had also
had over suggested.
"Ooh goodie!" Mera agreed. She had clapped her hands
very excitedly, and then accidentally tipped the entire open vial into Midnight's
soup without anyone's notice.
They had all sat down and dug into their soup. They
were chatting excitedly when Midnight realized something was going on. Her stomach
buzzed and her throat tickled, and all over her body she felt as if she were
being poked with millions upon millions of pins.
"Is something wrong?" asked one of Midnight's friends,
a shadow Kougra with heavy make-up.
But before poor Midnight could answer she had been
turned into a black Kadoatie.
In the shock, her friends had shrieked and left without
even a goodbye; probably afraid that their soup had been poisoned too. However,
Midnight could not blame them.
She could only blame Mera. Stupid, stupid Mera,
Midnight muttered in her thoughts constantly during her first day as a Kadoatie.
The Brainless and Most Vile Mera. The Annoying and Silly Mera. Why was I
friends with her in the first place? She's a twit, a nitwit, a moron! She's
certainly not coming over again...
During the next day, however, she became a bit more
reasonable. Midnight had jumped up onto her desk where she kept her book of
potions (which also had the words "never make more of a potion than necessary"
in big, black, bold letters, underlined twice on the first page) and flipped
through it until she had discovered the antidote. She read the first few ingredients:
1. A Tooth from the Snowager
2. 1/2 a cup of Grounded Scorchstone
3. An Ultranova
4. 3 Strands of Hair from a Dark Faerie
Midnight sighed. This was not an easy potion, not
at all. But, of course, it couldn't get any worse right?
Dead Wrong.
Midnight looked at the end of the list and screamed,
for the last ingredient was by far the worse.
5. A Drop of Blood from a Relative
Now to most Neopets, this wouldn't have been so bad.
After all, relatives are caring, nice Neopets who are supposed to look out for
you. However, for Midnight, this was not the case. You see, Midnight only had
one relative, the rest had been obliterated due to a wrong spell or potion or
another, and it was her sister, her evil, vile sister that loathe her and that
Midnight loathed back. She was a green Zafara, and her name was Edna.
***
Midnight checked her compass, right on track. Though she had almost never
visited her sister, she knew very well where she lived. Edna was the most feared
witch in the Haunted Woods after all.
Finally, the Kadoatie arrived over the black, iron
house. She landed in a little tuft of trees behind it, so as not to be seen.
Unless it was absolutely necessary, she really didn't want for Edna to know
who she really was.
Silently Midnight crept towards her dreaded sister's
house. She leaped through the open window, and peered around the house.
It hadn't changed much from the last time she visited,
and that was saying something since the last time she visited was in 28BN for
the house warming party that her parents forced her to come to. There was still
a huge, bubbling cauldron in the middle of the room, a rough-looking bed with
moldy covers, and an old, stone cabinet in the corner.
Disgusting, Midnight thought to herself. She
personally preferred her own stone cottage with it's little chintz chairs, cheerful,
pink tea pots, her fluffy, fuchsia bed, and her eggshell-colored, ornate cabinet.
The Kadoatie then slunk over to under the cabinet
so that she may surprise her sister with her presence when she arrived. If all
went well she could just jump on her, bite her, and then run off.
Suddenly, there was a creak at the door. Midnight's
back hair stiffened and she suppressed a hiss as her elder sister walked into
the room.
Edna was carrying a bunch of herbs that she carelessly
tossed into a pot. She then grabbed a large, wooden spoon and began to stir
the potion.
"Midnight, please get out from under the cabinet.
You'll scare the Spyders," she remarked without even looking up from her potion.
Shocked, the Kadoatie did as she was told. How'd
she know it was me? she thought.
Edna gestured her thumb over to a crystal ball in
the corner.
Ah, Midnight thought to herself, slightly
embarrassed. Any good witch or wizard glanced at their crystal balls before
entering a house. It would informed them of anything that might have happened
while they were away, in this case a sister in the form of a Kadoatie sneaking
into her house.
"You were always an awful witch. Never remembered
even the simplest rules of witchery," Edna clucked.
Midnight hissed. At least I'm not a hag!
Edna pulled out her wand. "Another comment like that
and I'll put you in an even worse situation than you are now! 'Course, that'd
almost be rather hard. Let me guess, someone accidentally spilled a little bit
of a potion that you were using to entertain in your food and now you need for
me to give you a drop of blood so that you can undo the spell. You're such a
moron for having those brainless, non-magical friends over," Edna sneered.
At least I have friends, quipped Midnight.
Sparks flew from Edna's wand. "Don't tempt me," she
snarled.
Midnight sat very stately looking at her disgusting
sister. The silence was very creepy.
So will you do it? Midnight finally asked.
"Maybe," replied Edna, with a smile lingering along
her green lips. Her long ears perked up, which meant she was very happy, which
also meant someone else was about to be very sad. "If..."
If?
"If you donate something to my potion," Edna said.
Midnight stared at her uncertainly. The deal didn't
sound all that bad. That all? she checked.
"Yup."
Deal then. Get a dagger and a vial, Midnight
responded happily in her mind.
"I have something better than a dagger, it's called
a Blood Grub and it will suck some blood without all of the dramatic effect,"
Edna mumbled dully as she searched her cabinets and pulled out a jar with a
nasty little worm inside and a very small vial. She opened the jar, pulled out
the Blood Grub, and placed it on her skin. The Zafara didn't even wince as her
own blood was sucked out, and didn't even cringe when she squeezed the little
worm over the vial, draining it of the red liquid inside. "There!" Edna muttered
as she set in on the table next to her.
Great! Midnight smiled. Now will you give
it to me?
"No, no, you have to do something for me first, remember?"
Oh yeah, what do you want me to fetch for you?
Edna smiled, a vicious, malignant smile. "Oh, you
don't have to get me anything, what I want you have right here..." she said
slyly.
Midnight could feel her whiskers stiffen, a bad sign.
Her sister was up to something.
What do you mean? I have nothing with me, she thought
slowly.
"Oh yes you do, the final ingredient to my spell.
One, whole Kadoatie!"
Edna leaped at her sister, claws bared. Luckily,
she managed to duck away.
Y-you're nuts! Midnight screamed in her mind.
I'm taking my blood and getting out of here! She made a run for the vial,
but the Edna blocked her.
"No Kadoatie, no deal!" she hissed. The Zafara then
smashed the small vial on the ground. The blood flew everywhere, splattering
Midnight. Edna then made one more grab for her sister, but she missed and Midnight
raced out.
It was later that night, after Midnight had just
gotten back to her cottage in the corner of the Haunted Woods when she realized
something. The blood from the vial had gotten on her! She had the final ingredient,
her relatives blood!
Quickly, Midnight ran over to the cauldron in the
corner of the room that she had been brewing the potion in, jumped on the edge,
and shook herself off, scattering small drops of blood from her sister off herself
and into the space around her.
As soon as the potion caught the drops it turned
a vivid blue. Midnight smiled when she saw it, it was the right color for the
potion! It was complete! The Kadoatie then bent her head and lapped up a few
drops.
She waited.
Suddenly, she felt the same sensation of when she
had first turned into the Kadoatie, but except it almost seemed inside out.
She gritted her teeth, then found out that they weren't small and pointy, but
large and sort of dull. She could feel her fur growing a bit longer, and her
feet stretching out. Finally it was done, or at least she thought it was. Quietly
she ran towards her bedroom and glanced in the mirror.
"YES!" she screamed aloud. "YES! I'M A ZAFARA AGAIN!"
She did a little dance, but then she heard the door
open from the other room.
"Here kitty, kitty, kitty..." Midnight heard Edna
call.
Midnight smiled, then grabbed her wand off her bedside
table. She quietly crept back into her living room, then shouted, "Hey sis,
you still want that Kadoatie?"
Then, with a flick of her wand, Edna turned into
a small, black Kadoatie.
The End
