The Legend of Vira

by hffichhoria

Vira sighed and gazed dreamily at the clouds of Faerieland. Oh how she wanted to fly up there and visit the Faeries, whom were often spoken of. Only a rare few got to visit Fyora, the Faerie Queen. However, she was just a green Acara, a plain, normal color. She shook her head. She shouldn't be ungrateful. Her mother, Alise, was a wonderful owner, buying her and her siblings lots of food and toys, and taking them on fun trips. Most recently they had been to Mystery Island, where she had learned that she could breathe underwater, like all Acaras. She longed to be painted Faerie. That would be wonderful.

Suddenly, a voice interrupted her thoughts. "Daydreaming again, Vira?" teased her older brother, Kalon. He was a shadow Shoyru, the family's former lab rat. He had been the lab rat until he had become a shadow Shoyru. Since he had been begging for a shadow paintbrush for a long time, he wouldn't go to the lab again after he became shadow.

She sniffed and turned to the mirror. She had won the beauty competition many times and had tons of trophies on the walls of her bedrooms. There were four gold, seven silver, and two bronze trophies. She was entering this week, too. She picked a blue hairbrush off of the nightstand and began brushing her fur. Suddenly, Kalon lunged and messed it up. "Kalon!" she screeched. "You always do that!"

"It's annoying having a beauty-obsessed sister in the house. You and that giggling bunch of ninnies you call friends. When they come over I want to make you guys get to the mall as soon as possible so I can get that noise out of my head."

She turned on him. "They are not a 'giggling bunch of ninnies'! They are my friends. And I'll have you know they've each won a whole bunch of Beauty Contests, though not as much as me."

Kalon snorted. "There you go. You guys are all vain little Neopets." He had meant for that to stir her up, and it did.

"Vain!" Vira screeched. "I am not vain! I'm going to get you Kalon!" She lunged at him and chased him down the hall.

Their screams were audible downstairs. Alise sighed. "Night," she said, gazing upstairs, "could you possibly separate Vira and Kalon and tell them that dinner is ready?" Night_mistress, a Christmas Peophin, nodded and trotted up the stairs. She had been rescued from the pound and had been painted when they got her.

Alise turned to the desert Aisha standing next to her. "Sorry Arya," she said to her first pet, "things have been crazy since we got Kalon." The Aisha nodded. "Could you set the table for me please? I have to finish cooking this pasta and baking the bread."

"Sure," Arya said. Her voice was light and musical and had a slight trill to it for she had been blessed by Illusen. She turned and got the placemats and utensils out from the drawers. As she began to set the places, she said, "I can't wait until Vira's birthday party! She's going to love your surprise!"

Alise laughed. "Yes she is. She's going to be so happy!" Alise had gotten Vira a Faerie Paintbrush, for she knew how much her Acara longed to fly, like the Faeries she so much adored.

As they spoke, Night was trotting upstairs, looking for her siblings. "Vira, Kalon," she called. Her voice was deep and husky. She had been mistreated by her previous owners and it had taken Alise a long time to gain her trust. Now she hated fighting and was the family peacemaker. She spotted the two at the end of the hall. Vira's fur was all messed up, and Kalon had several small scratches. Night sighed and trotted faster toward them. When she reached the two, she pulled them apart.

Kalon looked unhappily at his sister. "Aww, Night. Did ya have to?"

She glared at him. "Yes. We are a family, and families don't fight. Besides, mom says dinner is ready, and you two aren't getting any if you don't stop fighting. You should also be nice to Vira, as it is her birthday today."

Kalon grumbled but obeyed. "Just giving her some birthday fun," he said. Night ignored him. "Sorry Vira," he said, trying his best to look contrite.

"It's okay," she said. "And I'm sorry I scratched you. I didn't mean to."

Kalon stood up, shaking himself as Night looked on. "It's okay. I'm sorry I called you and your friends a bunch of ninnies." Vira smiled and trotted down the stairs.

Night looked at Kalon. "Do you have your birthday present?" she asked.

"Yes. Where should I put it?"

"Just bring it downstairs. Put it with Alise's. I'm going to get mine and Arya's, too. But hurry!" He nodded and flew into his room. She trotted back down the hall to her and Arya's room. They had run out of rooms when Alise got Kalon, and she had volunteered to share a room with Arya. They had the biggest room anyway, so it didn't matter. She quickly grabbed her and Arya's presents and hurried back downstairs. She deposited them next to Alise's present and hurried to the table. Kalon followed behind her, sliding into an empty chair next to Alise. The bread was in the center of the table, and the pasta was ladled on to everyone's plates. They all dug in without comment, savoring the good taste of the sauce.

After everyone was finished, Alise cleared the table, making room for the presents. Each Neopet went to the hall and grabbed theirs, setting it on the table before sitting back in their chairs. "Oh boy," Vira said. She reached for a present.

"Wait one sec," said Alise, dashing up the stairs. She soon returned with the camera. After sitting down, she held up the camera. "Okay now smile," she said. Vira posed with her present. The camera flashed, and then she looked at it.

"To Vira from Night," she read. "Happy birthday!" She smiled at the Peophin and began unwrapping her present. Suddenly, she gasped. "It's a Fyora poster! I've wanted one for the longest time! I know just where I'll put it! Thank you so much, Night!"

The Peophin smiled and shook her head, though she was pleased. "It was nothing," she said. She had never been thanked in her old home.

Vira reached for the next present. Alise took a picture and then Vira read, "To Vira from Kalon. Happy dancing, birthday girl." She smiled at her brother and quickly unwrapped a Fyora music box. "Oh it's so pretty!" she exclaimed. "I love it! I'll put it on my dresser and listen to it every day!"

Kalon smiled. "Good. Maybe that'll make you spend less time talking to me," he teased.

She stuck her tongue out at him, and turned to the next present. She posed and Alise took a picture. "To Vira from Arya," she read. "Happy birthday little one." She smiled at her older sister happily and began unwrapping. Suddenly she gasped. "A Fyora snow globe! It's so pretty! Oh I love Fyora! Thank you so much Arya!"

"It'll go with all the other Fyora stuff in your room," Arya said. Vira smiled. Her room was painted light purple, and she had Fyora sheets, a Fyora shaped rug, books about Fyora, and articles from the Neopian Times about her favorite Faerie.

"It'll be perfect!" she exclaimed, reaching for her last present. Alise took another picture, and she read the tag. "To Vira from Alise. Fly high with your dreams, girl!" Vira looked at the tag for a moment. "I wonder what it is," she pondered as she unwrapped. Suddenly she screeched. In her hands was a Faerie paintbrush. "I can be painted Faerie now!" she screamed, delighted. "Oh wow! Thanks soo much! I love this! I've wanted one for soo long!"

Alise smiled happily. "Tomorrow we can go to the Rainbow Pool and get you painted, and then go to Faerieland."

     "Yay!" all her pets said.

"Now go upstairs and go to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a fun day!"

The pets obeyed, running up the stairs to their rooms. Vira took all of her presents with her, putting them on her purple chair. She curled up in her bed and promptly went to sleep.

"Wake up sleepyhead," a voice said in her ear. Vira opened one eye and saw Night. "Alise says grab some cereal and let's go. We want to spend as much time in Faerieland as we can," the Peophin informed her before racing out of the room.

Vira leapt out of bed, ran a brush through her fur, and raced downstairs, picking up the Faerie paintbrush before she left. Once downstairs, she ate a bowl of NeoCrunch cereal before quickly running outside, the Faerie Paintbrush never leaving her side.

Her siblings and Alise were all gathered out front. When she saw Vira, she said, "Ready?" her pets nodded. "Okay, get ready. We're going to the Rainbow pool, then to Faerieland!" Her Neopets laughed and dashed out the door. The four chatted excitedly about how Vira would look with Faerie wings and what they would do in Faerieland.

When they arrived at the Rainbow Pool, only a few other pets were there. Vira jumped into the water and gave Alise the paintbrush. "I'm ready," she said excitedly. Alise painted her, and Vira dove into the water under the Rainbow Falls. As she passed under, she felt a strange sensation. Her sides started to itch. She surfaced and had started to itch when wings blossomed out of her sides. She sprang out of the water, flying high in the air above the Pool. She liked the feeling of her wings: strong yet beautiful. Her fur was a bright yellow that contrasted with the pink of her wings. She glided down to her family and hugged Alise. "Thank you so much! This is wonderful!"

Alise smiled. "I'm glad you're happy. Now we're off to Faerieland!" Her pets quickly clambered into the car, and Alise drove to a small building. It read 'Faerieland Taxi Service'. They all piled out and strode into the building. An Island Uni stood behind the front desk.

"Hello," she said brightly. "I'm Meaoki. What can I do for you today?"

"Could we rent one Uni to take us to Faerieland?" Alise asked.

"Of course. Wait one moment." Meaoki trotted into a back room and came back a few minutes later with another Uni, this one painted shadow. "This is Fidjett. He will take you to Faerieland." Fidjett smiled and Vira knew she liked him. Alise paid Meaoki and then Fidjett led them out.

Arya climbed on Vira, and Night rode Kalon. Alise got on Fidjett. "Ready?" Fidjett asked. They all nodded. "Then let's go!" The three winged pets sprang into the air, following Fidjett.

"How did this taxi service get started?" asked Night.

"We are all either pets that are painted Faerie or we are Unis. Our owners work in Faerieland, and we have to take them up each day. So we started this service to make some Neopoints and to do something. It keeps us fit and it's fun." Vira nodded. She knew the exhilaration of flying.

The group continued on for a few more minutes before reaching Faerieland. "Is there any particular time you want me back?" asked Fidjett as he prepared to leave.

Alise looked at her Neopets. "5:00?" she asked. The four nodded.

"Sounds good to me," Fidjett said, then soared away. The little group started walking towards the main gates of Faerieland.

Meanwhile, a dark Faerie was watching them through a crystal ball. "Puh," Jhudora spat as she saw Arya. "Blessed by Illusen. I wish I could ruin that Aisha's life." Suddenly, she gazed back at the group and her gaze lit on Vira. Little Vira, who was obsessed with Faeries. "But perhaps I can," she said as she watched Vira. Jhudora laughed evilly. She had a plan. She gathered a cloak of darkness around her and flew down from her cloud.

"Mom," said Night. "Can we go shopping?"

Alise opened her purse and handed each of her pets a bag of 200 Neopoints. "Yes, but meet back at the Healing Springs at 4:45. Be careful."

"Thank you!" her pets cried, racing off to find the best shopping spots. Night went to the bookstore, for she loved books. Arya went to look at Faerie Petpets. Kalon headed to the Wheel of Excitement.

Vira looked around. Where should she go? She then saw a crowd heading for the Poogle Racetrack. "Oh that'll be fun!" she exclaimed, flying towards the crowd. Jhudora, watching her, chuckled. She was far above the little Acara, thinking up how she could ensnare her. She suddenly had an idea. She made herself look like an Air Faerie, and flew down to meet Vira.

As Vira flew towards the Poogle Racetrack she suddenly found herself face to face with an Air Faerie. "Oh hello," she said, awed.

"Hello," Jhudora said. "I'm Relia. What's your name?"

     "Vira."

"Well Vira, that's a beautiful set of wings you have."

"Thank you Relia. I must admit that they are not near as beautiful as yours."

Jhudora laughed. "Oh thank you." She paused for a moment, then said, "Vira, do you want to look even more beautiful?"

     "Oh yes," Vira said, sighing.

"Would you like to keep your Faerie wings, but get a new color, one that no one else can have, one that is special because you were blessed by an Air Faerie?"

Vira gasped. "Oh I would love that!"

"Well, you shall have your wish," Jhudora said, casting the spell that would make Vira hers forever. The Acara transformed from a sweet little Faerie Acara to a sinister, yet beautiful Acara who hated anyone's but her own beauty. She was a pale green, with red eyes and horns in place of the things that Acaras have on top of their heads. Her fingernails were long and painted blood red. Her wings had become Korbat like wings; her tail like a devil's. She was wearing a black dress and tall black boots with white socks. She was the new Vira, the one that was feared by all.

"Go out and find someone beautiful to ruin, Vira," Jhudora said. "I believe Arya the Aisha has become quite beautiful, beautiful enough to go against you."

Vira snarled. "Where is she?" she asked, and her voice was syrupy and sweet, yet evil.

"She's down there in Faerieland with her family. Go and ruin her. You are the most beautiful Neopet and you know it. No one is better than you!"

Vira smiled and sprang down towards Faerieland. Using the magic that Jhudora had passed on to her, she kept herself invisible as she hovered over the city, watching the shops until she saw the desert Aisha. Arya was coming out of the Faerie Petpets shop, with a small Harris in tow. Vira became visible and flew down to meet her sister.

"Arya!" she called as she landed.

The Aisha spun around to look. "Who are you? I do not know you."

Vira laughed evilly. "Yes you do. I am your sister Vira."

Arya gasped. "No," she gasped faintly, "it cannot be." But she trailed off and looked into the creature's eyes. It was true. She saw the soul of her old Vira there, dancing in the red eyes. She was a prisoner of Jhudora.

"Yes. I was your sister once. But that was before my mother, Jhudora, rescued me from the pitiful world I was once in. I now have power. Power to kill! And you shall be first!" She advanced on Arya, red eyes gleaming.

"No!" Arya cried. "Jhudora is not your mother! Alise is!" Vira shook her head and leapt on Arya, clawing at her. Suddenly, the Aisha sprang into the air. "No Vira!" she cried, and a bright light gathered around her. "As you are darkness, I am light! I was blessed by Illusen, as you were blessed by Jhudora! You shall not kill me yet! If you want to, you must wait! But by then, it will be too late! You are not evil! Jhudora made you think you were! And I must go! But watch for me, sister!" she cried, vanishing in a clap of green lightning.

Vira leapt at the spot where Arya had been. But she was gone. Vira snarled and flew away into the darkness. To this day she attacks those who she believes to be more beautiful than her. Her favorite victims are desert Aishas, but any Aisha will do. She will remain this way until Arya fights her, either for good or evil. So if you are ever approached by a mysterious looking Acara, or hear the whisper of a flawed mirror, stay away! The next thing you see may be a winged dagger, aimed straight at your heart!
