Editorial Know How

by cherriepoof

THE DEEP CATACOMBS - An actual quote from The Neopian Times editorial page, Issue 90: "When is Ixi day, and is it possible to know these days ahead of time?"

I've been a follower of the Editorial page in The Neopian Times for quite some time now on Neopets. In fact, I started reading it way back when I was a young Neopian. However, I feel it's time for an intervention. Now, People of Neopia, I'm asking you a favor:

Think about your questions before sending them! Read the Help Section! Pleeeease?

The help section has been around since forever and a day ago, and will always have important information all Neopians should know about. Actually, many of the questions often asked in the editorial can be answered through there, the help pages.

How do you find it? Simple: all you do is click on the 'Help' button on the left of your screen. It has a text bubble with a question mark in it. It is on just about every page, it will not be a mysterious quest attempting to find it, and whenever you need it it is there. If you want to find what you need even faster, type what you want in the search box (above the words 'search Neopets') and it will give you a list of questions, with links to the answers, for the topic.

For example, say you want to find the answer to the above question (see first paragraph). Type 'Calendar' into the search box on the left and it will give you these options for answering your question, along with several others relating to other things:

Help : How long is a year in Neopian time?
Help : How can I find out what the time is in Neopia?
Help : Where can I find my diary?
Help : Does every neopet get its own day to honour it?
Help : When is my pets special day?

You can also type things in such as ‘Neopian’, as in the phrase 'Neopian Calendar', but there are many more results to sift through if that is the keyword used. Being specific can help you when you are searching for answers to your questions.

Do you see now that it is a whole lot easier to read the Help Section and New Features pages than it is sending an e-mail to Neopets? You simply click on the question you need answered and you will be sent to a page answering it. Personally, I think it is one of the greatest and most useful tools on Neopets, if I do say so myself.

Another concern I have is people not using this tool. With all its helpfulness and reliability, why aren't people using it!? The editorial is for questions relating to current things that don't have answers, not things that are general Neopian knowledge or have been released in the news already! Repetitive questions, like ‘What ifs’ about security are another tedious topic. You should know about the rules by now everyone! If you don’t, why not freshen up on them by going to the rules page and reading them once or twice. I promise you the reading is very informative and important for surfing this site.

However, if you still have looked and searched the entire site and still can't find your answer, I'll then allow you to send in your question. Try to make it a question that will not only benefit you, but all of Neopia. Make sure it cannot be answered in the New Features or Help, since those questions will most likely be repetitive and already answered. Missing things, however, are OK to send, but if you're expecting to get a question related to bugs or whatnot answered, don't expect it in The Neopian Times, since Neopets will probably just fix it.

It is important to have proper question asking etiquette as well. Do not be too intrusive when asking questions. Here are two examples of basically the same question. Before you send a question, think about how you are asking. Now, which one of these would you rather answer if you were the Neopets staff answering questions?

Good: Dear Neopets,

I have a question for you - Will there be an addition to the Meridell Plot in the near future?

Bad: HEY!! PEOPLE!!! HOW (AND WHEN) DOES THAT STUPID MERIDELL PLOT END?????

I do not know about adding usernames though. Personally, that gets on my nerves, but whatever you want to do, go for it. I can't stop you. Send a question however you want, it's your question anyway.

Bad topics for help questions include “How do I…” topics, which can almost always be found in the help section of Neopets. In fact, I’d recommend checking through the help guide and the new features pages of the past several weeks before asking any questions to the Neopets Staff. Another question, “Where is the Hidden Tower” or “Why doesn’t the New Features link to the Hidden Tower work?” Is a question that needs to stop. The Hidden Tower is hidden. You must find it yourself. Neopets will never, ever, ever answer that question.

Now that you know about good and bad questions, along with some question asking etiquette as well, I am now expecting you, my fellow Neopians, to improve your questions to the editor and give me something worth reading first thing when I see The Neopian Times again! For now, this is me, cherriepoof, telling everyone to love dung… and ask good questions to the Neopets Staff!

A note to all readers that I never stop enjoying to write: If you feel offended by this article (why I ask?), then send me something. It’s not meant to do so, all this is is an informational article and nothing more. I just hope it will help you and the whole Neopian Times-reading Neopia in some way.
