The Mercenary Lawyer: Part Five

Untitled Document

Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and focused. I reached into my well of power. DarkFire was still strong, though Air had dipped below high point. I used strong DarkFire power and the burst of power hit the Krawk. It was magical fire, so he didn't burn to death or anything, but he was knocked unconscious as it was and his energy level dropped steeply. I gently chanted a basic spell that required my energy, not my Elements. The Krawk's eyes fluttered open, his face was white, and he looked dazed. He was, really, I had hypnotized him.

He spilled out a grand scheme.

"Our best thieves robbed people and businesses of black things, tools and clothing we needed. The black would camouflage us. Then we could capture the HT with an Aisha Myriad we had stolen for the purpose. We would be known throughout Neopia with terror and fear."

He smiled and then his head fell back with a thunk. Unconscious again. I carefully poked his head with my foot, and when he didn't stir I sighed with relief. Despite all the noise going on in here, the revelry sounds continued outside the door. The room was probably soundproof. I considered my options, and decided to act on one.

I would leave DeathBringer's body on the front steps of the Chia Cop Headquarters (considering my current relationship with them, a personal confrontation would be unwise) along with a note explaining everything. The Chia Cops would come investigate the location the note told them, and should be able to pull off a capture of the thieves. I picked up the Krawk gingerly and let the shadows take me where I wished.

Fifteen minutes later, I was reclining on my bed with a satisfied air. The letter and DeathBringer had been dropped off, and I had stashed the clues in the same safe place as the Aisha Myriad. I sat up suddenly. The Aisha Myriad! I couldn't keep it, much we would appreciate the Neopoints it would bring, but I knew someone who had the right to have it.

I stepped onto the clouds of Faerieland and headed for Faerie City. Skye had long ago discovered the location of the HT. The Queen was there, of course, and I gave her the Aisha Myriad, telling her she'd find out everything about it later on. A bit baffled, she had accepted the Myriad and hadn't said anything as I walked off.

Maybe I'd better go to the gang's hideout and see what the police have done. So I traveled the twisty path for probably the final time, and arrived at the cave opening.

I began my way down to the center of the caverns, and when I got there the place was empty. Scuff marks and rugs in disarray indicated fights. The Cops had come and done their part. The prisoners would talk, I knew, in hopes of better fates for themselves. DeathBringer would face probably the worst sentence of them all. I wouldn't need to attend any court meeting. On tomorrow's news the case would be cleared up. The whole incident wasn't over yet though.

The next day, I visited Diva. She answered the door, saw it was me, and told her Chia she'd be right back. We strolled around Neopia, and I carefully brought up the subject of payment. She sighed.

"How much do I owe you?"

I calculated silently. "One thousand and seven hundred Neopoints, please."

Diva gaped but handed the money over, then stalked quickly off. I sighed with relief and walked home. The case was over and I could finally have some personal time. Skye was in the kitchen getting out a PyramiBread when I came in and handed her the 1700 NP. She nodded understandingly and accepted them. I had kept the initial 150 NP for myself. It was always handy to have some spending money with you....

I sat down in my chair. I could set up a business in this....
