The Mercenary Lawyer: Part Three

by moonsunangel

Untitled Document You guessed it, I headed to Uni's Clothing. It was twilight, that eerie time just before it goes dark, and I saw that the guards were getting more numerous as the sun went down. I watched for awhile, simply thinking. What next? Well, if I was suspicious of the guard, why not check with the official people? I slipped back to my home and began searching for the whereabouts of the Chia Cop Headquarters. I have my sources, you must realize, and within fifteen minutes I was heading for the spot.

When I reached the front door, I could see that the desk clerk was more than half-asleep and that the room was deserted. Sloppy. I entered the room noiselessly, and padded by the clerk silently, who just snorted and turned. The corridor I found myself in had many doors, all with name plaques on the front. It only took me a minute to find the one I was looking for- C. Chiop, Chief Chia Cop. I closed my eyes, then used my Air ability to slip into the next room without opening the door. I stayed in the shadows, and the Chief didn't even suspect I was there. Peter the Security Expert was in front of him, and was talking urgently.

"-but Sir, we must not make it look suspicious!"

"We need to guard it," the Chief growled. "Increase the guard as it gets darker, hear me? I want at least two score guards there when it's pitch black!"

     "Yes Sir."

Peter saluted and meekly went out the door. The Chief grumbled and snorted to himself as he sorted through papers on his desk.

     "You don't seem too happy."

I materialized out of the shadows, and you should've seen the guy's face. His jaw dropped, his eyes popped, and he made little gasping noises like a fish out of the water.

He tried to press the alarm button, but I beat him to it and ripped the plastic from the wall. It disconnected with a snap, and little multicolored wires hung from the black void. I casually tossed the red button onto his desk. He sat gaping. You'd think the guy, being a cop as he was, would get a little used to dangerous acts like this. My voice cut through the silence.

"Why do you demand such a high guard on Uni's Clothing?"

Finally he got his act together. His jaw rolled up, his eyes returned to normal size, and he glowered at me.

"What's it to you?" he snapped. I leaned against the wall. "That's really personal, you know. It's just a simple question..."

I was playing with high stakes and both of us knew it. If he was smart and fast enough, he could catch me off guard and bolt through the door behind me, and raise the alarm. But the Chief didn't seem smart enough, and definitely not fast enough, though I kept my guard up. I was staring at him, waiting for a reaction, when I noticed a slight movement of his arm. That's all that saved me. As I ducked, dropped, and rolled to the side, he threw an Exploding Potion at me. I saw this happen from the side. The bottle was still in the air. I couldn't afford to let it explode, all the Cops would come running.

I thrust out with a bolt of Air power, and the bottle froze in midair. My weak, instinctive spell would only keep it held up by Air for a few seconds, so I flipped myself up, thrust out a paw, and grabbed it just as it began falling. The Chief was still at his desk, his face a mask of stunned surprise. I glowered at him, tossed it up in the air, and used a quick burst of DarkFire power. The bottle, in the air, burst into flame. Ash dropped into my paw, and the Chief let out a faint little gasp.

"It's guarded so heavily because numerous cases of this have happened over the past month! People and pets as well as stores have been robbed, and we are being extra careful!" he babbled. I nodded, and melted back into the shadows. I had the info I needed.

Let's see, several cases of severe robbery, enough to panic the police and so secret the public doesn't know, an Aisha Myriad, and that fake necklace. I rolled onto my stomach on my bed and dipped into my backpack to pull out the bottle. I took it out and laid it flat on the bedspread, staring at it as if that would somehow unlock its secrets.

The necklace was of nice design. A silver chain with a latch on the back, with a solid silver "plaque" on it where a decorative gem would be. Inscribed on the plaque were the words "sugadivababe_123 for my beloved Chia". Pretty sappy. I turned it over in my paws, as an idea struck, and closely examined the back. There was a little symbol on the back, three letters- DHQ. I stared at it, my mind working as fast as it could go. HQ- it could stand for Head Quarters. D could stand for almost anything though.

I suddenly vented my frustration, slamming my fisted paw into the metalwork. A tiny pop could be heard and I stared. The impact had caused a latch to snap, revealing a tiny compartment. The compartment wasn't meant to be opened that way, but who really cared? Inside the compartment was a piece of paper, rolled up tightly to be squeezed into this small space. I unrolled it carefully, as it was wrinkled from being read many times before-

Dear X3,

X1 sent you a warning, and you'd best heed it. Be careful. Take every black item of clothing that could be useful, got that? I want this to be clean, so set up someone likely. And know what you're doing, because if you take one wrong step, you're in the jug and if we have to get you out of it, I'll personally skin you myself. Do I make myself clear? Do it right, X3.

DeathBringer

I stared, excitement flooding me. I had unlocked almost everything, and the pieces were falling together at last.
