Tame the Word Game

by nickywoowoo

GAMES ROOM - Having trouble with those pesky word games? In this article I will give you the hints and tips that will make you a Castle of Eliv Thade, Word Poker & Spell or Starve champion!

First things first - Although the games are very different, the basis of the games are the same. They are all mixtures of letters from which you must find words.

The key to finding words is to know how to sort the letters out. For example: obviously a j & k will never go next to each other but an a & t often do. Lets take the anagram P N T E E O S. For Word Poker we are looking for words more than 3 letters long. First of all, look for the letters that commonly go next to each other. In this anagram we have ee, ot, on, en, st etc. etc. Taking the "EE" you can make some words like teen, see, tees, seep etc etc. Once you can't find any more words with the 2 letters, try another group.

Once you have mastered that, you must then make every word possible from a group of letters. In this puzzle we have the letters t, n, e, s. Now someone might see the word "sent" but you cannot stop there! If you see these letters together, try to make more than just the one word. For example: sent, nets, tens, nest. Obviously some groups of letters will only make one word. Try the letters n, m, e, a, and see how many words you can make.

The last thing to keep in mind when searching for words are common starts to words and common ends to words, known as prefixes & suffixes. Some common prefixes are re, St, pl, cr etc etc. Words like rent, real, rein, star, stamp, stand, place, plural, please, crate, cry, cramp can be made. The choices are endless!

There are many, many more strategies you can use when looking for words, but first of all the basics must be mastered. Being that each game is different, I will explain the rules and strategies I use when playing the games. By the way, the 7 letter word above was NEOPETS ;).

The Castle of Eliv Thade - You must unscramble an anagram whilst moving around the board. To get anywhere near the top of the trophy list you must play the game on hard mode. You have to decide whether to move 1,2 or 3 spaces. If you move 1 space there is a 5 letter anagram, 2 spaces a 6 letter anagram, 3 spaces a 7 letter anagram. There are both common dictionary words and Neopets words, so a knowledge of your Neopets surroundings is a definite bonus!

The scoring is as follows:
5 letter anagram - 2 pts
6 letter anagram - 5 pts
7 letter anagram - 10 pts
8 letter anagram 50 pts
Solving anagram in a room ( once only per room ) 50 pts
Finishing game 150 pts

Once you have entered all the rooms, you can enter the crypt to solve the 8 letter word for the winning score. Normally, for completing a game, you get about 650pts which is about 1000np, so this game is defiantly well worth the time! To get higher scores, enter all the rooms and then move back and forth 3 spaces at a time, until you are happy with your score. Lastly, NEVER EVER walk on the tiles with cracks in them!!

Word Poker - This is my favourite of the 3 games. You have 8 letters jumbled and you have to make as many words as possible within the time limit. Using the strategies I explained above, you might be finding words very easily now! The key strategy with word poker is to decide which score you are going to use. There is a score for:

3 letter words - 4 pts per word
4 letter words - 6 pts per word
5 letter words - 8 pts per word
Full House - ( 15 words = 50 pts, 25 words = 150 pts )
Flush - 10 pts for every word you make with a particular starting letter
Wild - The more words the more pts!
A word 7 letters or more - Bonus 50 pts

You need to remember that you can only choose a score once and the game will end once you have chosen all the scores. The best way to get high scores is to get as many bonus words as possible, but this relies on the luck of the letters, the better the letters, the better the score you can get. I think the best ever group of letters I have seen is R T D S A I E N. See how you do with those letters!

Spell or Starve - This game can be very difficult! Again it relies partly on the letters in your board. The most 2 things to remember is that 1. The longer the word, the more the points and 2. Rotate, Rotate, Rotate!. The best way to get a high score is to get lots of long words, but remember the game is timed, so don't spend too much time looking for super long words. Whenever you are stuck, rotate the board and you will be amazed at what can turn up! For some exciting twists to the game, some letters change, some letters give bonus points to words and the neopet square can be ANY letter you want!

You are given a score to achieve before you can move on to the next level. To get the highest score you must complete all the levels. The later the level, the higher the score you need to move on. This game is like a giant game of word games, so if you like word games you will LOVE this game.

I hope these hints and tips help. If you have any questions, feel free to Neomail me!
