Going for a Dive!
It was a perfect day to go for a dive. The sun was shining brightly, making the cool, sparkling water appear more welcoming than usual. You were on a visit to see the coral reefs not too far from Roo Island. Being a seasoned diver, you decide that it would be a good idea to take a dive and get closer to the marine life of Roo Island, and today seemed to be a good day. With all your diving gear on, you headed over to the boat rental counter that was easily identified by a sign.
Hi, I'd like to rent a small boat for an hour, please, you tell the Blumaroo in charge of the counter.
He grunted, That will be a 1000 Neopoints, and 50000 Neopoints deposit for the boat.
You handed him the Neopoints and he signals for you to follow him, and you obediently do so. He leads you to a decent-looking boat, and told you a couple of instructions on how to operate the boat. As you climbed in to unload the other diving equipment that you had not yet put on, he stopped you by placing his foot on the hull of the boat and blocked your way.
Remember to come back on time, or we charge 2000 Neopoints per hour, he cautioned. You nodded your head. He turned to leave, and you stepped into the boat and threw a few items in, before stepping back out. The waters by the coast was shallow, and you would have to push the boat quite a distance before you could hop on. Thinking of the prospect of a good dive and the cool water around your legs, you were renewed with energy despite the heat and pushing the boat was not as difficult as it should have been.
Meeting Egan!
As you were pushing, you noticed that Roo Island waters was really very clear. There was no pollution, and you could see the sand that was beneath your feet. The sand was very fine, and it was all that was - no rock in sight for quite a long distance. But in the distance, you could see that there was something lying the the sand. A brown lump flaked with orange and yellow. What was it?
When you neared it, you noticed it was a petpet Crocalu, and its owner was nowhere in sight. Hey little guy, what are you doing here? you stop pushing your boat, and bend down to pick him up.
He looked up at you, but did not say a thing. Did you get separated from your owner? What's his or her name? you ask him. I can see if I can find him or her.
The petpet did not say anything, but wriggled to get free of your grasp. Against your better judgment, you placed the petpet into your boat before he could get free. I don't want you to die, and the waters are quite deep... and you don't seem to swim too well... you explain to the petpet as you continued to push the boat out.
Eventually, the water was deep enough and you got ready to climb back on board. You started the motor and the engine of the boat roared to life. The little petpet was frightened and ran toward you.
Carefully, you pick (what you reckon was a) him up. Say, what's your name?
Egan, he says, and he gave you a little more information about himself.

Name: Egan
Meaning: Young Fighter
Gender: Male
Age: ?
Species: Crocalu
Occupation: Defending his Owner Interesting Specimen kept by his owner.
You climbed into the boat, staying at the rear to guide it out to sea. You strike up a conversation with the petpet, who was on one of the benches by the side of the boat. He seemed to be looking into the ocean. So, Egan, your owner lives in the sea?
Yeah, he does, his eyes still looking at the sea.
You glance over at him, sighing inwardly. Clearly, he did not want to talk to you. Despite the clear water, the foam that was caused by the boat did not make it exactly easy to see if there was anything - or anyone - under the water. You tried to strike up another conversation.
So, Egan, how did you meet your owner? The silence that hung in the air following the question seemed to cause some tension. You did not expect that he would answer you, but he did.
Well, it was like this... he began.
This section is told by Egan.
I first met by owner by the riverside where I was born. I had lived there all my life - until after I left with my owner. He's a Maraquan Eyrie by the way. He had half of his body on land, and he was talking to two Hissis that I later found out were two Neopians that he worked with.
I was on the shore, wandering about, looking for food, when a large snake, larger than one that I have ever seen appeared from the grasses behind me. As I am small, it lunged forward, wanting to eat me. I guess this is typical, right?
I tried to escape, and I ran as fast as my stubby little legs could carry me. I headed inland. I tried to dodge into a burrow in the ground not too far from where I was then, but the snake was faster. It slitered up alongside me, and went in front of me, blocking my entrance.
Guided by instinct, I turned back and ran towards the river bank. Of course, I did not manage to get very far before the snake caught up and blocked my way again. As it lowered its head, getting ready to swallow me whole I presume, I went forward and bit the snake hard on its back. Surprisingly, it was not very hard. The snake was visibly upset by it and tried to get away, shaking me off. I persevered and held on.
This had all captured my current owner's attention. He had finished his conversation with his two friends and they had just left not too long ago.
Unfortunately, I got giddy with all the shaking and had to let go. As I landed with a THUD! on the ground, the snake, angrier than ever, came after me. I backed slowly towards a patch of plants growing by the river.
My owner was near enough, and as a result he managed to grab hold of the snake's body with his paw - he's really strong, by the way - such that the snake was pinned down. Of course my owner was bigger than the snake and the snake retreated as it was let go.
As my owner witnessed my little fight, he named me Egan. After that, I follow him to most places he go.
Wow, I see. That's interesting. I'll see if I can spot your owner later.
When you were far out enough, and the water was so deep it was near impossible to spot the ocean floor, you put on the rest of your diving gear and got ready to go under water.
Ah!, you thought, The water's pefect! You took a look up into the boat at the petpet, whom you noticed was using his stumpy legs, trying to get into the water.
Hey, don't! I don't think it's a good idea to -
But it was too late. With a loud SLOOPSH! the petpet landed in the water. Somehow, he managed to use his little legs to say afloat. What a miracle, you thought to yourself, I thought Crocalus cannot swim!
Just then, out of the corner of your eye you notice that there seemed to be something coming towards you. It was orange, with some purple here and there. A fish? A really big fish?
You grabbed the petpet, and just managed to scramble on board with the petpet and a lot of seawater when whatever it was approached the side of your boat. The stranger stopped in time, but still generated quite a large wave that rocked your boat from side to side.
He poked his head above water. At that point, you noticed that he was actually a Maraquan Eyrie! You were about to mutter something, but he spoke first. Hey! You found Egan! He points to the petpet that was in your arms with a paw, while using the other to make circular movemnts - to stay afloat, presumably. I've been looking all over for that guy. Thanks!
Still stunned, you hand the petpet over. U- uh, n-no p-problem, you stutter.
You regained your composure after a while and you pulled the diving mask and snorkel over your head. Carefully, you remove the dive fins as well, trying not to wet the boat further. What's your name? you ask the Eyrie.
Me? I'm Osyrias, he replies.
Profile
Hey, uh, Osyrias is it? What do you do about here? you ask him, curious about this Maraquan Eyrie that lived so far from Maraqua. Wasn't Maraqua the only underwater civilisation?
So, you want to know more about me? Well, here is some basic information, he tells you, more than happy to share about himself.

Name: Osyrias
Alias: Ria
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Species: Eyrie
Paint: Maraquan
Height : 5'9".
Weight: 219 lbs
Build: Heavy (average for an Eyrie)
Skin: Peach
Eyes: Bright green eyes
Mouth: Short beak
Accessories: The neckpiece
Occupation: Archaeologist?
Lives: Anywhere
Personality: Osyrias is usually bursting with confidence, as he is a little too sure of himself. It is good to have confidence, but Osyrias has just a little too much. He's fun to be around though, as long as he is not beaten by you over and over - He's little of a sore loser sometimes. He would very much prefer to be around others than by himself, and can easily cause the tension between people to melt.
The breakdown here would give a better look at Osyrias' character.

Hi guys. Star here. Just wanted to talk about Osyrias' personality. Personally I find him a very enjoyable character, being able to just about what he wants, getting away with it and cheering people up. He's really light hearted as well, and can really make people laugh, either by telling jokes or... making a fool of himself. xD; Hey - wait! Don't push me off your page! Osyriaaassssss...!
Sorry about that, Star sometimes is just too much, he shakes his head sadly.

Adaptations
Just so you know, I'm specially adapted to the life I live, Osyrias says as he goes on to explains the usefulness of his various body parts.

My short beak is useful for eating nuts. A short beak is essential to crack those really hard and stubborn nuts open... What? There are nuts underwater you know? All right, I kid. I don't just eat nuts. (Yeah, I do eat some, you know.) Since I live underwater my beak is useless for its original purpose. Not that good, huh? Well, I've still got some handy paws that would help.
That's right! Meet my paws! Uh, hi. -waves his paws at you- These are useful for me to catch prey. I am actually quite strong. I bet I can even tackle you... but don't worry, I won't. ;) They also help me paddle about. But their main use comes in when I search those sunken ships and buried temples. They're rooted on the bottom, and sometimes it is always easier to move around on a surface rather than trying to balance in front of something.

This powerful tail is especially useful for swimming. It is very powerful. It can send a wave that could potentially knock you unconscious. Hey, don't look so worried! I won't harm you, honest! I have wings and fins along my back to aid me, but this thing is the thing that makes it possible for me to move extremely fast. Ha- Ha! Can't keep up, can you?
Wow, I am surprised that one like you exists! you exclaim.
Osyrias looked even more smug. How so? How I look? He grinned.
More like your full-of-yourself attitude... you mutter, but was quick to add, Eh, where you live, especially. Good thing he did not hear what you said.
Oh, that. Like I said, I live anywhere. Anywhere here in the ocean, the sea, but Maraqua, he says directly.
Story
You don't live in Maraqua? you blurted out before you could stop yourself.
What gave you that idea? I maybe classified as a "Maraquan Eyrie" but that doesn't mean I live in Maraqua! he exclaimed. Like all you land dwellers are called Neopians, but not all of you live in Neopia Central.
You nod your head, realising how true that was. Then where are you from, then? How's your life like? This is the first time I've meet someone like you, you tell him.
True, this is not very common, Osyrias acknowledges. Then how about you hear my story?
Ah, sorry x1000000 for being so slow. ;_; I'll get the story up by this weekend. @_@;
Prologue;
I was born in Maraqua, or rather a small community close to it. Who isn't born near that underwater captial even those above on the land hear about? Well, there are some, but I was not one of the fortunate few. It isn't that bad, really, so don't run off telling everyone I said it is a horrible place.
It's just that people say the ocean is free, that you can go whereever you wish inside of it, but they do not know how wrong they are.
The places that are forbidden for us to go are many; compared to those restricted areas up above on land. I know this from my new friends who tell me about it. But I don't dream on going on land anymore, because I have found what I love doing now. It's still under the water, and I realise it's as close to what I want as I can get.
Chapter I;
(Information about Osyrias' childhood. He is narrating his childhood. He's constantly being ignored by the other Eyries - they live in a town together - and do not want to play with him because he always swims the fastest. He can constantly beat them at races and hide at far places. His dad is the fastest swimmer so Osyrias inherited the trait from him. He is constantly upset, and his dad decides to talk to him.)
So it all began somewhere. Where would be a good place to start? Well, how about this: I was the fastest swimmer in our village of Eyries. Different species live in different communities where we come from. I am not bragging; it is true, rather unfortunately. Living in a village, as one might expect, we did not have many forms of entertainment. The world certainly has changed from when almost all of it were consisting of simple villages. Anyway, we did not have a lot of entertainment. The older folks usually gathered under the village chief's hut - or the equivalent of it underwater - to talk about the latest happenings around the area, eating maraquan snacks like some kelp and relaxing. Most of us turn vegetarian as we grow older, you know. The adults generally look after the younger ones, or they are in charge of hunting for food. Even kelp needs to be harvested somewhere; it is nearly impossible to just grow it. A select few - the fast swimmers - would head to Maraqua City (the one you Neopians are familiar with and have it on your map) to gather the latest news. After all, even a village has to stay updated about what's happening in the world.
Now where was I? Right. So what do we young ones do? Like just every kid in the world, we play! Occassionally we play 'throw the rock', but not much since the adults always stop us before long, terrifed that we would get hurt. Our most favourite game is racing - a competition to see who was the fastest. In a way it was also a practise for the real race later on in life - to see who fetches the news from Maraqua city, but that is something else. I used to enjoy that game, and perhaps I still do. But the other young Eyries, after a while, they noticed that I was always winning. As long as I played, they had no chance as I beat them by a lot. Even the second-best was not always the same Eyrie. I did not join them very often for my own reasons, so they did not realise it at first. They all wanted a chance to win, and so they did not allow me to race any more.
The first time I heard that, I was hurt. This was something that did not ever happen to any other Eyrie. It was something that came as a real shock. Especially since swimming was such freedom to me. I still remember exactly how it was like...
Politely, I had asked, Hey, can I join this race? It was more out of courtesy than a real question. The others were all getting ready, and decided no. But why?
Because you always win. We finally realised it. It isn't fun anymore that way, one of them said bluntly.
Another one agreed. Yeah, give others a chance!
But I didn't choose to be able to swim fast -I began, but they cut in.
Well, it isn't ours as well, they laugh.
I was stoned for a moment, being physically there, but yet my mind was not. In the background, I could hear them counting down. 3...2...1...Go!!
I still could not believe it. I was not allowed to play simply because they did not like the fact that I was winning? It did not make any sense. It seemed like it was a dream... a nightmare maybe. But the dust from the ocean floor that they kicked up as they became smaller and smaller until they were just mere specks told me that it was true.
I headed back home to where my father was. He was a fast swimmer, and in fact one of those that fetched the news from Maraqua city. His swimming skills were excellent, and I was sure I had wanted to be just like him. I could go beyond the boundaries that our village chief set, what he deemed as "unsafe". Why was it now that I am so mad at the fact that I was good at swimming? It seemed to be a curse, even.
Of course, I had no idea what was a real curse. As soon as I saw my dad, I could not help but ask him, Why?
What? he asked, taken aback by the question that had come out of the blue. What's going on?
Why can you swim so fast? I cried out, and I was sure he instantly knew that something had gone wrong. He laughed, and I was really mad. Calmly, he asked me what had gone on, and I told him everything.
It doesn't matter that others say. They are just... jealous of your ability. There will always be those bitter and resentful in this world. Ignore them; it isn't worth caring. I'm proud of you, he told me, and his tone softened. And I am sure so would your mother. My mother had passed away a few years back, but I was too young to remember why.
I was comforted a little, and was about to thank my dad, but then he continued. Though, I think that you are old enough now, Osyrias. Let me tell you something about our village... our legends, and also about you.
Chapter II;
(Osyrias dad tells him about souls. Most are tied to another person in another world, but usually that person is too insignificant to matter much to the people of Neopia. However, Osyrias is tied to Osiris, and as such he has some power. As per tradition, at birth was granted a blessing by the village magician. His father chose for him to be able to swim fast, explaining his "talent". Osyrias is told he likely has more power in him, but he must discover it himself.)
Did you know, Osyrias, that every creature, each being in Neopia, has a spirit according to the legend? my father asked.
I looked at him and nodded. Yeah, the one we are told often by the storytellers.
Well, it's true, he said.
I stared at him in disbelief. If he was trying to comfort me, he did not have to go so far! He looked at my face, and he said, Just listen, alright? You know that each spirit has two beings in different worlds that are tied by the spirit.
I had heard of this before. Still a little doubtful, I asked, If it is true, then why is it still only a legend?
Most do not believe this anymore, that is for certain. The village council could not, or rather, they do not want people to know. It does not concern them.
What? Why?
Well, the beings that most of us are connected to in the other world are just ordinary folk, and that means the influence on this world is minimal. If it doesn't matter, then why tell them?
So why are you telling me this, I asked. It doesn't concern me.
Oh, it does all right. But first, do you know the legend of Osiris? he asked me.
Yeah, that undead guy, right? I said.
Not quite. He's the Egyptian god of the afterlife. His power, if you remember, is quite immense.
And? I asked dumbly.
Well... you have the same spirit as him, my dad said in an all-too-cheerful manner.
The silence that followed was scary.
WHAT? That's impossible. That guy exists in a legend, not even history books. How can it be? I finally shouted. Look dad, if you're trying to comfort me, this really won't do.
I'm serious, Ria. He used my nickname, indicating that he was not lying. I was sure. The oracle said so, and we all know that his predictions can be trusted.
Wellll... everybody makes mistakes, I pointed out.
My dad shook his head, Where did you think you get your speed from?
Uh, you? I asked, finding the question just outrageously hilarious.
No. Maybe in part, but although I am fast, your speed... at your age... it is just something not normal. You can match my speed even now. When I was young it was impossible. You got it from the blessing when you were born, he said.
That's right! I remembered. In the legend the storytellers told us, each child was blessed with a gift of their parents' choosing. Strength, speed or wisdom! But in this case it was just selected children I guess.
So why did you choose speed, and not strength or wisdom? I think being wise would be better, I told him.
Because, Ostrias, I believe that strength and wisdom can be earned. Strength through hard work, and wisdom through experience. Speed is only talent. Practise will get you somewhere, but there's a limit. Besides, if you are going to say strength has a limit when you work hard - well, what's the point of being so strong? he asked. And as per the legend, you have another in-born power.
I nodded my head, beginning to grasp the situation, just a little.
Good. I hoped you can understand this, and I am glad you did. However, you cannot tell your friends, he warned.
I asked him why. He answered with such seriousness that I was scared.
The village council had this law for a reason. There would be a lot of chaos if this sort of power was made known to exist.
Chapter III;
(Osyrias continues to play alone. Although he knows the problem it does not help. The others are not told - they cannot know, as the laws state so, to prevent any jealousy. He grew a liking for studying fossils. He used to dig them up from the wastelands further than the rest would go as it was forbidden to go there. He discovered interesting lifeforms -ancient ones that he would like to further study.)
TBA
Chapter IV;
(Osyrias gets caught for exploring forbidden places. He is limited to only stay within village grounds for a while. This made Osyrias realise how stuck he actually was. Determined, he decided to take up studying palaeontology so that he can leave his home. He realises that that is the only way he can access more areas of the ocean. What is the point of being able to swim fast if you're caged?)
TBA
Chapter V;
(This chapter chronicles his struggles to get to the college in Maraqua, as well as problems arising because of his power he discovered.)
TBA
Chapter VI;
(Completing his studies, he leaves. He finds what he has been looking for, and a way to control his power. At the end of this final chapter, he meets Guncotton and Ziyannar.)

Occupation
Well, you do want to know about my job, right? Osyrias asks you.
You nod eagerly in anticipation, hearing Osyrias' explanation.
Right, in all technical terms I'm supposed to be an archaeologist, but I don't like to be called that. I think of arghaeologist whenever that word is said, haha. I'm learning from Gunco about archaeology, and that's his and Ziyannar's job. You know, looking at leftover buildings and structures and all those shiny artifacts. Only thing that interests me in that sort of archaeology is the shiny artifacts.
Truth of the matter is, I'm training to be a palaeontologist. Simply put, it is the study of fossils. The two disciplines are related, and they complement each other, but they are quite different. For one, we palaeontologists study prehistoric life. It's a sort of historical science, studying the supposed evolution of life. We study fossils as well, some of us do. Though how that could be regarded as a separate class altogether is another story.
Friends - The GOZ Team
Most of the time, you are by yourself, right? you ask Osyrias. Don't you get lonely?
I may be "alone", in that down there, I am by myself, but actually I am part of the GOZ team. Osyrias tells you.
Goes? you ask, a bit surprised. Goes where?
Osyrias let out a little sigh. He had probably been through this many times. It's spelled G-O-Z, made up of our team members' names. Guncotton, me, and Ziyannar. You know, I sort of mentioned them in passing earlier. It sounds like 'goes', in the sense that we go places. It's kind of lame, but I wasn't the one who came up with it. He shrugs, acting nonchalant, but it was obvious it bothered him.
Oh! I see! Sorry, you tell him.
He shrugs. Never mind. Let me tell you how a conversation those two are like...
Adventures with Z and Gunco
Osyrias: Hey guys. Um, discovered anything new?
Gunco: Yeah, we did. Really interesting things. A new temple, though in quite bad condition, we can still make out the altar...
Ziyannar: Gunco, forget it. He doesn't want to know. Look at his face.
Osyrias: You got that right...
Ziyannar: Say, why are you even on our team? You don't even seem interested.
Gunco: Well, he can go places that we can't go, and there are many things underwater. We might be able to haul a ship's wreck up, but that's about all. Nothing bigger.
Osyrias: Yeah, and I like what I do too.
Ziyannar: Fine...
Er, wow. Things are pretty tense, huh? you ask him nervously.
Hm, not really. They really aren't that bad. Most people are worse, he says. Although it was a casual remark, you couldn't help but be a little unsettled. If being around others really annoyed him....
Hey, don't worry. I think you're okay. It was as though he had read your mind. After all, you helped me find Egan.
Collected Things
Could you show me anything you have found? you earnestly ask Osyrias.
Sure! Some of these are found by Gunco and Ziyannar too... he says.
(If you are a little lost, here's what you should do: Mouse over the images for its name and Neopets' description, and read Osyrias' description of each of them! More will be added as Osyrias finds more things. ^^)
These three items I love the most.
Some other interesting pottery I found. Two vases moulded together and a vase with a Scamader... handle..
Of course, not everything we find is in one piece.
This thing is worth a lot... because no one knows what's inside! ;)
Oh, delicious~ Uh, I mean, treasures come in many forms?
There's some ancient text as well. Not exactly my taste, but...
Roleplay Example
Wow, that's really amazing, you comment.
Osyrias starts to look a little smug, all over again.
So.. What do you do these days, then? you ask him. I mean how and where do you go searching for your treasure.
Different places. Hmm... Osyrias looked thoughtful for a moment. Why don't I share a recent adventure with you?
The still waters were disturbed by a slight movement. First, it was just barely noticable. Then, it got louder and louder as the one making the noise got closer. Osyrias swam by, stirring up a whole army of bubbles in his wake. There was orange, a few light flashes of purple, and a distinct teal lightning marking along the side of his body. Using his paws, he pushed himself forward under the water slightly, using his modified wings to balance himself. A paw delicately brushed the bottom of the ocean floor, and then another, as Osyrias stopped his swim. Finally, his large tail came down and rested on the land.
The Eyrie stopped for a moment as he took in a breath, blowing more bubbles out as he did so. Doing calculations in his head, he guessed where he was and how far he had to go for his destination. It was not too long before he had is answer.
Fifty miles.
In a fell swoop he was off - his large tail sent a mighty wave backward that pushed his large body towards the front. His front legs automatically extended forward, balancing him as he swam gracefully. With a few more beats of his tail, there was no indication of his presence at where he had just rested not so long ago.
Adoptables and Toybox
I think I should get you something, as a thanks, Osyrias tells you.
You shake your head. No, it's fine. That isn't necessary.
No, I insist. Egan means a lot to me as well, Osyrias says, and Egan seemed to be nodding his head in agreement.
You start to head to the back of the boat to start the motor. Really, it's okay. And it's late, I have to go, you say, thinking about how much you would now have to pay that Blumaroo. You silently hope he did not already use all of your deposit.
Hey! Wait! Before you go, why don't you take one of these? Osyrias asked. They're a replica of one of the treasures that I managed to find underwater. Pick one, or two, they're all for free.

I also have my own collection, Osyrias takes out a box in which he collects all his adoptables. Took me a long time to find so many. I think this should be all the Eyrie adopts with Maraquan Eyries in them.
Hey, Star here. -squeezes onto Osyrias' petpage- Just want to say, yeah, I manually searched for and petpage hopped to find so many adopts. ;P
Art Gallery
Osyrias holds up a collection of pictures that are framed. I don't only have my toybox, I also have professionally-drawn pictures of myself! he beams. Various Neopians have drawn me, and I have kept their masterpieces.
Hover over the images to see who drew the images.

My *cough* owner *cough* , Star, did not draw me enough to have her art listed here... Actually, it was because it was used elsewhere and she did not want to repeat the art yet. Osyrias explains.
Return?
Well, it's been nice meeting you, guest. He tells you. But I have to go. It's getting late. Hopefully, you'll come again? His voice was softer, almost pleading. This was the first time since you met him that Osyrias actually seemed... like he was actually just another mortal. The air that he usually talked with was gone.
Osyrias dug around his belongings before handing you an item, so that you could come back.

Nice meeting you too, Osyrias, you say. Oh no! I have to go as well. Man, that Roo is going to earn a lot of money off me for not returning the boat on time! you moan, realising you had stayed out for five hours and surprisingly had not yet gone to dive.
That's terrible, but it's worth it, yes? You don't meet people like me every day, Osyrias laughs.
Oh yeah, you thought. The smug king is back.
Yet, what he did next was a surprise.
