Neopedia : Skies Over Meridell

Skies Over Meridell

A brother and sister were the first to build a flyer that actually made it off the ground. Shawna flew first - she was lighter - for all of fifteen seconds. After a few modifications, Tav took flight, remaining in the sky for almost a minute. That was the first time any Neopian flew (except those with their own wings, of course!) and it was over the skies of Meridell.

Years later, more inventors have turned their hands and minds to flyers. While they are still an uncommon sight, Neopians are almost accustomed to hearing the hiss and chuck-a-chug of a flier's engine as it glides through the sky. Used chiefly as messenger and delivery services, the flyers are still not able to carry heavy cargo. The planes move faster than anything in Neopia, which means people who purchase the service are willing to pay through the nose. Only the most important documents and deliveries are sent by air... creating all kinds of opportunities for those with wicked imaginations.

Recently, a new term has found its way into Neopian vocabulary, however, and that term is "sky pirate." Using super fast flyers armed with light weapons (you don't need a lot of firepower to bring down one of these fragile machines), sky pirates use violence to bring down messenger and delivery planes, stealing their valuable cargo and selling it to the highest bidder.

In lieu of these rapscallions, delivery services now hire fighter flyers to guard their deliveries. Only the best flyers are recruited, for only the best and bravest can fend off the attacks of these highwaymen of the sky.
