SUMMER HOLIDAYS SPECIAL
My Holiday... or Is It?
I booked a holiday away,
A chance to have a break.
Such fun things I had planned to do
On this trip I would take!
A passage booked to Faerieland,
Just Lupe and Draik and I.
Set to go by Floud-drawn boat,
The only way to fly!
One morning bright we did set out,
But slow did voyage creep!
Alas as moments ambled on,
We drifted fast to sleep.
Some time had passed when we awoke
And found out we were there!
It was, though, when we glanced around,
That first we came aware.
No satin clouds and spinning Wheels,
But rocky plains so dry.
Tyrannia? How'd we get here?
How did this go awry?
The Flouds? Long gone! We were alone.
My pets? They did protest!
"Chin up!" I cried, with straining grin,
"We'll have to do our best."
I do confess, the next short week,
Did pass in blur of fun.
The Concert Hall was always loud,
And shows? We saw each one!
We dared to try Grarrl Keno, too,
And won a hefty sum.
(To boredom, though, at certain Wheel,
We sadly did succumb.)
So if your holiday is wrecked,
To this, I can attest --
Make the most of where you are,
It might be for the best!
A Newspaper Ad
Ah! Vacationers rejoice
To see the matchless beauty here.
Beneath the icy mountain's gaze,
Find Happy Valley's endless cheer.
Pack your bags and book a room;
Discover worlds you've never known.
Explore this winter wonderland,
And bring your pets -- don't come alone!
Ski on slopes of knee-deep snow,
Then take a dip in steaming springs.
Relax inside our heated lodge --
Trust us, we have everything!
Skating, skiing, hiking trails,
We've got them all, and shopping, too.
Both city pets and country folk
Will have a thousand things to do.
So stay a week and try it out,
And if you like it, come again.
For Happy Valley never melts,
And everyone here is a friend.
The hammock is creakin',
and the palm trees be dancin';
I feel neither the sand in my feet
nor the blue yonder
pressin' at my eyes -- just...
my sort of halfway in-between.
Crisscross mesh strung
snugly from tree trunks
like a net that keeps me
suspended, all ties severed
from petty worries left
Mystery Island's not just
sand and beaches;
all one needs is a
hammock like this,
swayin', chillin', then
just listen to the forest...
And when you've done
just that, even poems can be
shorter than routine.
Hemispheres (or, A Snow-Lover's Lament)
Time of sun and sand
And humid heat.
But, I must confess,
I prefer the chilly winter days.
So bring on Terror Mountain!
Let us vacation in the snow,
Build snowmen on the hills,
Careen down sledding slopes,
Catch snowflakes on our tongues,
And bundle up around a fire
On a cold mountain day.
Leave behind the islands
With their waving palms
And crashing waves --
Don't you agree with me
That there is something
To be desired in the cold?
It's summer --
Let the snow-play begin!
My Vacation (Deemed a Failure)
My vacation ended badly,
I simply seethe with shame.
My choices were outrageous,
But I cannot take the blame.
I sought out Mystery Island,
But the hotels were quite packed.
So I tried out the Lost Desert,
And then the swarms attacked.
Happy Valley was an option,
But the jolliness disturbed me,
The peak had some potential,
But Tarla had a party.
Tyrannia sounds great,
But a Grarrl tried to eat me,
Maraqua seemed quite nice,
But my clothes got all soggy.
Roo Island was too dotty,
Shenkuu was too windy,
Faerieland was far too pink,
And the Woods were very shady...
So much for my vacation,
I tried to have a blast.
But after all the fruitless toil,
I came back home at last.
