Story Eight Hundred Twenty Ends Friday, March 22

Jhudora scowled as she stared at the calendar hanging on the wall of her Bluff. A particular date had been completely blacked out - a date, she noted with a sour expression, that was swiftly approaching. The 17th of the Month of Running. Illusen's special day.

The dark faerie hated Illusen Day more than she hated Illusen herself; it was not enough for the blasted earth faerie to exist, she also needed to have a day celebrating her! Jhudora was the only faerie who deserved a special day, or so she thought.

And that was why, Jhudora thought with a grin as she ticked an X through the current date on her calendar, she had a very special plan indeed for the upcoming "holiday".

Jhudora looked at the potion glistening from a shelf on her wall. It was illuminated with swirls of purple and green, the prettiest potion she had ever seen by far.

"The perfect plan indeed," Jhudora said as she grabbed the potion off of the shelf to admire it. "All I have to do is drink the potion and I will look exactly like Illusen for 24 hours. Then All I have to do is the worst possible things I can think of. This will be the best day ever. I can wreak havoc on all of Neopia, but miss perfect Illusen will get blamed for it. Once everyone hates her, I will be the only faerie with a special day."

Jhudora couldn't help but smile, he plan was flawless. The only way her plan wouldn't work is if...

Illusen was out and about herself, of course. Everyone would figure something was up if there were two Illusens running around, with one acting... mischievous. "So", Jhudora mused to herself, "I will have to make sure Illusen will not make herself known that day. Locking her up wouldn't be easy, since she had magic of her own. Lame Earth magic, but magic nonetheless." Jhudora's brow furrowed as she thought about the best way to keep the real Illusen out of the picture, when the light bulb went off in her head. Of course! The answer to all her problems was... Author: xiaolin10413

another potion. Perhaps it wouldn't matter if Illusen was out and about, as long as she wasn't seen.

A grin pulled at the corners of Jhudora's lips. Perhaps it'd be even better, if Illusen were to see everything that would happen in her name, but be helpless to stop it.

A bit of seaweed for slipperiness, a bit of cloud for translucency, and she'd need essence of frog in Illusen's throat to at least distort her voice, if not mute it.

Jhudora bent over her cauldron, brewing what she thought was the second prettiest potion she'd ever seen, a viscous liquid illuminated with swirls of green and purple.

Jhudora folded her arms and leaned back a little to admire her work. The potion bubbled ominously, shooting a few tiny purple sparks up into the air. She was just about to ladle a generous portion into a bottle, admiring the hissing and spitting sounds of her creation, when there was a knock at the entrance.

Dropping the ladle back into the potion with a splash, Jhudora stormed to the door and flung it open.

“What do you want?” she snapped.

A small faerie Wocky hovered in the doorway uncertainly. “I've come to ask if you have another quest for me today…” Noticing the thoughtful way that Jhudora had to begun to observe him in, he paled slightly. “Y-you look busy, so maybe I should come back later…”

“Nonsense.” Jhudora spread her arms in her best imitation of a welcoming gesture, grinning at the nervous Neopet. “I have a very special quest for you today.”

She beckoned the Wocky inside as she poured the liquid into two separate bottles this time. Her guest did not look at all reassured as he watched Jhudora set one down carefully, and bring the other over to him.

“Drink this.”

“...are you sure you don't just want me to bring you another book or lunchbox?” the wocky asked weakly.

“Drink it.” Jhudora stabbed a finger at the bottle of potion and watched with satisfaction as the wocky reluctantly drained it in a single gulp.

For a few moments, Jhudora stared at the still very visible wocky. And then, with a small popping sound, he vanished.

“Perfect!” Jhudora let out of a cackle of delight. She snatched up a purple brush that had been sitting on the nearest table and thrust it at the space where the Neopet had been. “Now take this, and get out.”

Having successfully tested the potion, the last obstacle was how she was going to get Illusen to drink it. She couldn't exactly fly over to Meridell and knock on Illusen's door herself, but Illusen was so trusting, surely there was another way to...

There was another knock on the door. Probably another Neopet who had come for a quest.

Jhudora smirked as she headed to answer it once again. The real fun could begin soon.

"Oh. It's you again. How many times do I have to tell you, you're an incompetent fool and will never, ever, be worthy of magical artifacts of ultimate power. And I know I'm hardly known for my strict moral code, but to give you anything dangerous would be downright irresponsible. Go away."

"But I'll do ANYTHING for a dark faerie wand!" whined the little yellow Flotsam at her door.

Jhudora would normally have slammed the door in his face at this point, but the desperation in his voice caught her attention. And he had such a pathetic, innocent face. He could probably go to all sorts of places without being seen, do all sorts of things without arousing suspicion...

"Actually, there is a little thing you might be able to help me with. Step inside."

Meanwhile, the faerie Wocky was sitting morosely on the edge of the bluff, gazing out over Faerie City and wondering if this invisibility was permanent. He was so proud of his beautifully coloured wings, his sleek and glossy mane and tail. The brush next to him seemed mocking- what use did he have for grooming if nobody would ever see him?! He had to ask. Maybe if he completed another quest for Jhudora, she'd change him back, or at least tell him when (or if) it would wear off. Surely she wouldn't be too angry with him just for asking?

As he approached the entrance to her lair, the door flew open, nearly hitting him in the face. He leapt back, startled, and was even more startled to see Jhudora ushering out a young Flotsam. They were both grinning, and Jhudora had her arm around the Neopet in an almost maternal way. Realising that they couldn't see him, he fluttered as close to them as he dared and tried not to breath too loudly.

"Okay, Flip. You remember what to do when you get to Illusen's, right? Good boy. I'll be so grateful when you get back. I've always known you had great potential, you brave thing, you. You can do it! Good luck, and be careful with that potion!"

As soon as the Flotsam was out of view, Jhudora's face fell back into its default expression of contempt and scorn. "Good boy," she sneered, and whirled back inside with a bark of laughter.

The faerie Wocky gasped. Jhudora must be planning to turn Illusen invisible for some reason. This will not end well.

"Okay Dixie," she said to herself. "It is your time to shine, you need to go warn Illusen of Jhudora's plan before it is too late!"

Dixie flew as fast as she could towards Meridell. One of the perks of being invisible is that she did not have to obey air traffic laws.

Out of breath, Dixie finally got to Illusen's door. She knocked just as the Flotsam came up behind her.

How will this story end?

Flip nearly jumped out of his skin at the sharp, disembodied knocking on the door. The Flotsam fumbled with the purple and green potion in his hands, speedily placed it on the doorstep, and bolted down the stairwell that spiraled around the tree trunk where Illusen's home was nestled. Dixie noticed a small card tied with a ribbon around the potion bottle. "A gift for you on your special day! Use it before the potency fades. :)"

The door opened suddenly, revealing Illusen, who furrowed her brow seeing no one at her door.

"Hm. What's this?" She plucked the potion from the ground and examined the card. "A gift? How charming."

"No!" Dixie exclaimed, or tried to as her voice came out no louder than a whisper, another effect of the potion she drank. Determined to save Illusen, the invisible Wocky snatched the potion from the faerie's hands, uncorked it, and drank it again in one swig.

"Who goes there?" Illusen demanded, earthen magic beginning to swirl around her hands. "Reveal yourself!"

Dixie's stomach gurgled. And... Pop! The faerie Wocky was visible once more. She and Illusen stared at each other for a few moments in tense silence.

"I--it's Jhudora!" Dixie sputtered. She rambled an explanation of everything she had seen as Illusen relaxed, listening carefully. "And the yellow Flotsam just ran off after I knocked, and then I took the potion from you, and I drank it, and now we're here!" Illusen nodded slowly.

"You have my gratitude, little one," Illusen said. Her eyes slid to the trunk of her tree, where the barest edge of a yellow fin could be seen of a Flotsam hiding around the other side. "And you," Illusen called out, "why don't you join us?" A moment passed, and Flip the Flotsam crept his way around the tree and up to the door.

"Lady Illusen! Nice to see you," Flip called, rubbing his fins together sheepishly.

"You conspired with the dark faerie Jhudora against me," Illusen replied angrily, "on this day of all days, no less! You should be ashamed." Flip's head dropped.

"I--I'm so sorry! I just really, really wanted a... no, I shouldn't have done this... please, I can make it up to you! I'll do anything!" Flip pleaded. Illusen glanced back at Dixie, who suddenly realized she still held her hairbrush in one hand and the potion bottle in the other, which contained just a bit of swirling liquid left.

"Actually," Illusen replied thoughtfully, "there is something you can do for me..." The faerie and Dixie grinned at one another.

*****

Jhudora slammed the door to her abode closed as she sent off the yellow Flotsam, who eyed his dark faerie wand reward with some distaste.

"Finally, that's over..." The dark faerie pinched the bridge of her nose, then looked over the hairbrush the Flotsam had dropped on her. She took a seat in front of her mirror and brushed through her hair. Grinning evilly, Jhudora considered the next step in her plan to defame Illusen. However, the hairbrush felt... weird...

Pop! All of Jhudora's hair vanished, leaving her completely bald. Outside at a distance, Illusen and Dixie could hear the muffled screech, followed by "I CAN'T GO OUT LIKE THIS!!!" The faerie and Wocky grinned at each other again.

The End
