Story One-Hundred and Seven Ends December 13th
"Mmm, I just LOVE drinking tea here," sighed a Faerie Krawk
sipping some hot breakfast tea.
"Yes, this is really the most quiet, relaxing place in Neopia Central," her companion agreed.
The two friends sat at a table set up in front of Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe in the Art Centre of
Neopia Central. They continued chatting, unaware of two glowing yellow eyes that appeared from a
crack in the corner of the underground plaza.
The two friends still idly chatted, listening to the sounds of the cavern. The newspaper
Chia was shouting "Earthquake rocks Neopian Valley! Read all about it!"
A Poogle was reciting poetry for a few listeners, "Quiggle, Quiggle, why do you wiggle?"
The Aisha storytellers were taking turns adding passages to the most recent storytelling.
"Suddenly, out of the darkness..."
Suddenly, out of the darkness a figured flashed by, too quick for anyone to see clearly, before it
reached more shadows and disappeared into them.
The tea drinkers didn't even notice the streaking form, but they did notice that the storytellers'
voices were not so drowned out. The Poogle was still reciting poetry, and people talked by the cafe...
what was missing?
"Umm, where did the newspaperboy go?" The lady's question rang out among the murmur of the centre. Many pets
turned their heads to look. The only things left by the newsstand were some newspapers strewn on the floor...

"...and the Chia's green hat." concluded a red Aisha.
"Okay," said the rainbow Aisha sitting to her right, "that's it until the next contestant. Everyone meet back here at 6 PM N.S.T. for our next winner!"
"Did you notice how everything the Aishas have said is coming true?" commented the Krawk's friend, a Shadow Wocky. Meanwhile, the others searched frantically for the Chia who'd disappeared. "Maybe we should try to tell the writers to say good things?" the Wocky asked. "That way, nothing bad will happen."
"There's two reasons not to do that," explained the Krawk. "First, the story will be boring, and they'll lose. And two... well, you're just superstitious." They continued sipping tea until 4:00, then decided to visit the Art Gallery for a while, until they could come back and hear what the storytellers were saying, and see if the Aishas really did have magical storytelling powers.
When the time came, the Aishas returned and sat around the fire, which surprisingly enough, wasn't emitting any smoke. The striped Aisha began by saying, "Our winner is... ki_master_george! Here's his story..."
Sure enough, the striped Aisha picked up where the story had left off, rattling off the details of how the two friends had spent their afternoon, right up to that very moment. Then the striped Aisha stated, "'They just said what you said,' the Krawk said,"...
..."even saying you were the one who said it!" declared the Krawk, finishing the striped Aisha's sentence at the same time. The Wocky and Krawk gaped at each other in awe, while the striped Aisha gave them a glance and winked.
"Maybe... we should... tell people... to write a happy ending," the Faerie Krawk said, in unison with the striped Aisha.
"Yeah, I think you're right," the Wocky said, and they began their exit from the catacombs. "Let's meet here at 10:00 A.M. to convince the early writers." The friends started on their seperate paths home, when suddenly...
"Wait!" exclaimed the Wocky. Her friend ran back. "What about the disappearing newspaper Chia?"
"Well, my guess is that the writers will want us to start investigating that in the morning, Shadow. Now, I really should be going... I bet my owner is calling me for dinner! Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of others who will look."
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Shadow sighed, resuming the walk home. Suddenly, Shadow heard a sudden noise...

..."She spun to see a shadow retreating into darkness, followed by a high pitch scream." The girl typed on her computer. Glancing up at the screen once more, she grinned at the though of the two Neopets, whose fate remained momentarily frozen in time. "Shuddering, Shadow thought of asking her friend if she'd also witnessed the mysterious figure, but discarded the idea as Marie, her Faerie Krawk companion, walked off into the distance..." The girl smiled, and started to think of a good cliffhanger...
***
Shadow met Marie early the next morning. It was important that they warned the contestants, because this was a story where legends and make believe came true.
"Hear ye, hear ye!" A rainbow Aisha yelled, and an unusual hush came over the crowd, who'd been impatiently waiting for the latest installment. "The latest storyteller is... aizii!"
The rainbow Aisha spoke in a low, hushed tone. She recited the teenager's story, speaking quicker as the tension mounted.
"SUDDENLY!" She burst, drawing the entire crowd's attention. "A piercing wail rang through the hall. Startled, Shadow turned to Marie, only to scream..."
Shadow was startled by the sudden scream that echoed in the hall, punctuating the Aisha's words. She turned to face Marie, only to scream...
"MARIE? WHERE ARE YOU?!?"
Where Marie had once been standing, there was now only an empty space...

..."Marie, come out! This isn't funny!" Shadow yelled.
Suddenly, it hit her. Shadow knew what she had to do. "I have to enter the next contest, and say that Marie reappears!"
She got right to work, and finally, at 4:00 PM NST, Shadow had finished writing. She
rushed to the Art Centre, bolting inside and finding the submissions box.
"It's a good thing I made it on time," she panted, dropping her story into the box.
After a tall tchea tea, Shadow made her way towards the campfire, eager to see if she'd won. All she could think of was her best friend Marie, and whether she would be safe.
After waiting for a few minutes, a green Aisha emerged, ready to make an announcement. Clearing her throat, the green Aisha declared, "Attention, everyone. Our winner for this evening is... Shadow the Wocky!"
Shadow screamed with joy. She was so glad that her friend would soon be back. The story progressed, and towards the end, Marie the Faerie Krawk poked her head through a narrow walkway, returning to her best friend's side.
"Shadow," Marie said, "I think I might have figured out the mystery..."

...of what happened to the Chia paperboy!" Marie whispered excitedly in Shadow's ear. Neither of them
noticed a blue form, hidden behind the building as they spoke. The mysterious figure let out an evil
snicker before floating off into the darkness.
"Yes, that must be it... but what now? I mean, we can't expect to keep winning the story telling
competition everyday, can we?" asked Shadow.
"Well, that's what we're gonna have to do," replied Marie, "it's not like we have much choice."
Shadow and Marie sat down in Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe for some tigersquash ice cream. They carefully
thought of a good story with lots of descriptive words.
"Shadow, put the word 'Jhudora' in there somewhere, and we'll win for sure! It's the Word of the Day."
"Alrighty then, Marie. Whatever you say."
They managed to finish their story; and a good one it was. The next day, when they gathered around
the campfire, the Aisha announced:
"There were a lot of very good entries this morning, but there can only be one winner. Before I make
the announcement, I would like to send a big congratulations to my friend Lucia. She passed her exams,
and is now a fully qualified nurse! Anyway, the winner is... Mr. Pant Devil!"
"OH NO!!!" gasped Marie, "What are we going to do? What if he wrote that all of Neopia is
to be destroyed? Then what?!?"
"I really don't know," replied Shadow, "but I am definitely beginning to panic now."
The Aisha began reading out the story, but suddenly there was big puff of gray smoke. When
the smoke cleared, Shadow and Marie had disappeared.
"Marie! Marie! Where are you?!?" bellowed Shadow into the dark void.
"I'm over here. How are we ever going to stop the Aishas now?!?" she heard Marie's echoing reply.
"To top it all off," Shadow answered, "we're stuck here, and I don't even know where or what
'here' is, either. How will we ever get out?"...

"We could be stuck here forever!" Marie sobbed. Shadow could not see Marie, much less reach her,
but she tried to comfort her with words.
"It will be alright, Marie. We're part of the story. Someone will write us back in eventually!"
But nothing happened. Marie and Shadow waited for what seemed like an eternity, and eventually lost hope of
return. They made some friends in the void, among them the Chia paperboy and a handful of other insignificant
characters who had been made to disappear from past Storytelling Contests, for the sake of advancing the plot.
Like the trapped villagers from the previous contest that everyone had forgotten about, or Skippy the Floud,
who was killed off in the 96th storytelling; he was also among them.
"This is terrible! If only they knew what they were doing... someone has to stop this!" Marie kept thinking.
As hope was slowly abandoned, a surprising thing happened one day...
Out of nowhere, Marie, Shadow, and their companions were standing on solid ground again. They
gazed at each other in shock. Once again, they were capable of seeing, after going so long without
being able to view anything but darkness.
Skippy cried joyfully. "I... I can't believe this..." he whispered between happy sobs,
"I thought we were stuck forever! I'm... I'm going to find Kylin!" He ran off in the general
direction of his left; Marie and Shadow followed.
"Come on," Skippy shouted, "we've got to find someone who can stop this thing!" They turned a corner
and stopped short, seeing those who'd gathered around the campfire. Everyone was leaving.
"Wait... WAIT!!!" cried Marie. The
gathering of Neopians stopped to stare at the two disconcerted speakers, who were gasping for breath.
"You... *gasp*... you can't let this continue! Everything that's being written is coming true!"
exclaimed Shadow.
Jhudora sighed. "We WERE considering ending it; I'm NOT pleased with how things went during
the last submission."
The striped Aisha chimed in. "Indeed. You see, the Pant Devil wrote himself in as the quickest
thief in Neopia. We thought it would be good for a laugh, until everyone woke up this morning, poor
and destitute. . We realised
something must be done. Everything that was written came true!"
"So THAT's why we reappeared! We've only been gone for a day, but it seemed like an eternity!"
Marie stated.
"Yes," the Aisha said soothingly. "The void was horrible; I'm very glad the latest author wrote you
out of that terrible place."
"Look!" cried a Pteri, pointing off into a distance. The crowd saw big glowing yellow eyes close shut,
and a shadow of movement disappear into the darkness.
"Umm... Marie?" Shadow jabbed at the Krawk's side to get her attention.
"Yes?" she responded. Shadow pointed to where the striped Aisha had been previously standing. She was now
nowhere in sight.
"Oh no..." Marie whispered under her breath...

..."We have to rescue the striped Aisha!" cried Shadow. They began to run around Neopia, telling everyone to write good things,
but no one listened. That is, until they came to ferretcat10. Ferretcat10 had just been working on her story.
SShe really wanted the story take a turn for the better, but she wanted to win even more.
"You want me to make it so that everyone lives happily ever after?" she asked. Shadow and Marie nodded their
heads in agreement. "I don't think I can do that yet. After all, it's only Thursday! But I will try to make
things better."
With the Neopets coaching her, ferretcat10's story began to take shape.
The next day, they waited anxiously by the campfire. The rainbow Aisha announced, "Today's winner is ferretcat10!"
and a cheer went up. a cheer went up. The Pant Devil suddenly appeared in a jail cell and morphed into a mutant Kiko,
and all the stolen items were returned to their rightful owners. Then, the striped Aisha reappeared. She told of her
kidnapping by the fearsome creature with glowing eyes.
The newspaper Chia, who the same thing had happened to, tried his best
to describe it. "It was just like a mass of shadow, with eyes that burned with hatred. I've
never heard of such a creature in
Neopia. It was far too big to be the Shadow Usul; I'm not sure how to describe it... B-but
it was something like THAT!!!" the Chia screamed, pointing behind the other pets before running off.
The pets turned to glare at ferretcat10. "You just HAD to, didn't you?"
Ferretcat10 shrugged. "Well, I HAD to keep the plot moving! We still have three more sections to go!"
The pets slowly turned around to meet the monstrous creation...

...it was the most grotesque creature anyone had ever seen! It was huge and looked like it had ten times more
appetite than the Esophagor.
"RUN!" Shadow and Marie yelled as everyone tore off running. If anyone had bothered looking back, they
would've seen the monster vanish in a flash, slithering into a small crack in the cavern.
The next day, Shadow and Marie returned to the campfire to find out what would happen next. They arrived
just in time for the striped Aisha to announce: "And, the winner is... sky_high_sci_fi!"
Shadow glanced back at sky_high_sci_fi and Marie held her breath as
the Aisha began to read the tale.
"The next day, the monster reappeared in the Art Centre. This time, it was focused on the Fairy Krawk
and the Shadow Wocky who sat near the campfire."
Shadow and Marie stared at each other, wide-eyed with terror.
Hardly bothering to look back, they tore off towards the Coffee Shoppe, slamming the door behind them.
It didn't take long for them to realize they'd been followed. They spun around just as the monster
began stomping towards to the campfire. "I'm really
sorry..." a voice said. They realized it was sky_high_sci_fi.
"What were you doing?!?" Marie yelled. "Are you TRYING to kill us!?!"
"I'm really sorry, but you haven't heard the rest of the story..." sky_high_sci_fi
mumbled.
"Well," Shadow said, gesturing to the campfire that was being terrorized by the monster, "It doesn't seem like
we'll be hearing the end soon. Why don't you tell us?"
"Well," sky_high_sci_fi replied, "to make a long story short, you get away and this exact conversation
happens while that monster is terrorizing the art area. You do some spy work and follow the monster back
to its lair, through a crack in the wall that leads into the void. Okay, according to my story I've gotta go now,
but the creature should be finished terrorizing the art center in about ten minutes. Nice seeing you!"
sky_high_sci_fi said, and walked off.
Now, neither the pets liked having their fortune told, but after all they'd been through, they decided not
to comment on it. So they followed sky_high_sci_fi's instructions, and sure enough, the monster lumbered
over to a corner after everyone had left, squirming through a crack in the wall that was probably caused by
the recent earthquake 'The almighty Blank Mind' had been so careful to mention in the first section of the story.
"Are you sure this is safe?" Shadow asked nervously, but all that Marie could manage was a muffled wimper.
They pushed through the crack in the wall, hoping to get to the bottom of this mystery...

Suddenly, Marie stopped in the narrow crevice, causing Shadow to bump into her. Shadow let out a startled yell.
"Don't be such a dimwit, Shadow!" Marie scolded in a low voice. "That sky_high_sci_fi may have not
killed us off, but another scream like that and we will be dead meat anyway!"
Shadow mumbled something inaudible. Marie scowled.
"Now, we've got to use our heads. Think! The brainless brat that got us into this mess said
this infernal crevass led into the void, right?" Fear and the impenetrable darkness had brought out the 'best'
of Marie's language. "Since all the captives were freed, it'll just be us in there... and it."
Marie had barely finished speaking, when suddenly feeling as though she were suspended in mid-air.
With a horrible
sinking feeling, she instantly recognized the hollow, alone-in-the-world feeling: they were in the void.
She didn't blame the monster for wanting companionship so desperately.
An ear-piercing shriek shattered the absolute silence. Shadow instinctively tried to locate the source of the
sound---and saw a pair of huge burning eyes.
She tried to scream, but the sound died on her lips. For the eyes did not, as reported, burn with hatred.
Instead, they were filled with a soft smouldering flame of deep yearning, and a hint of dangerous envy, as well...
It had been trapped in this forsaken land since the beginning of the Storytelling Contest, slowly losing
itself to the void, being corrupted and mutated. It sat alone in the darkness waiting, and here were two little
ones, who had walked voluntarily into its lair!
Shadow stood still, fascinated. As always, the monster's thoughts were reflected in its eyes, and anyone who
wanted to could read them. Shadow felt a deep pity welling up inside her, but she had to do what she had to do.
SShadow began to speak, and though she initially wavered, her voice soon grew clearer and more firm.
"I'm very, very sorry," Marie began, "but you and I, we're from two different worlds, literally! If you keep
kidnapping people,
all you're gonna get is a bunch of terrified captives, not friends! Yes I know you don't like it any more than I
do, but the fact's there: it's not going to work."
"Us Neopets, we can't stay here," Marie included. "Maybe we can visit sometime, but not remain forever!"
"You know that; you just don't want to admit it." Shadow concluded. "You... you've just got to understand
that friends aren't earned that way!" She didn't trust herself to speak anymore: the terrible heart-wrenching
sadness in the creature's reproachful eyes tore her heart. Shadow looked deeply into them, hoping that it would
understand.
After a last look at Shadow, those eyes slowly flickered out. Shadow found herself standing on firm ground, with
Marie by her side. As they scrambled out of the crack, cheers went up in all directions. With all the pets
milling around, Shadow couldn't help looking back at the crack, where a pair of large luminous eyes lurked.
She felt hot tears brimming in her own. If there was only something they could do...

..."I've got it!" Shadow exclaimed. She tore off through the Art Centre.
"Where are you
going?" Marie yelled as she ran after her. Shadow finally stopped in front of a large and glamourous
building. Marie looked up and smiled, then looked at Shadow.
"Exactly," Shadow said.
They entered the building and looked around. "Are you sure this is going to work?" asked Marie.
"I hope..." Shadow mumbled as he walked up to the counter. "Excuse me?" Shadow asked.
A large red
Grarrl turned around to look at him. "Yes?" he grunted.
"Umm..." Marie nudged Shadow.
"... Right.
Is The Neopets Team here today?"
"Yeah. Why?" the red Grarrl grunted.
"Well.. could you tell us what
floor?" Marie asked politely.
"Third floor. But wh..."
The Grarrl's sentence didn't get finished, because by then Shadow and Marie were already in the elevator.
Shadow stepped out, followed by Marie, on the third floor. The two walked down the hall, until they
found a door labeled THE NEOPETS TEAM.
Shadow held her breath and opened the door. She found the entire Neopets Crew sitting around
playing a card game involving mana and tapping (that we won't name here, due to copyright laws.)
Marie stared in disbelief, "So, THIS is what they do all day..."
One of them stepped over. "May I help you?"
Shadow budged in front of Marie. "Yes. If I'm not mistaken, you people created Neopets, right?"
"Mmmhmm,"
the person nodded.
"Well," Shadow started, telling the person all about the Art Centre and the monster
in the crack.
"Wow. That's a great story. You should enter that in the Story Telling Competition" the
person said and patted Shadow on the head.
The annoyed Wocky groaned, "But it really happened!"
"Oh.. I thought
you were joking. Follow me."
The Faerie Krawk and the Wocky followed the person into a small room. The person sat down in front of a
computer and began to type.
"...and the monster came out and made friends with everyone, ending the strange magic at the Art
Centre... and I got a Rod Of SuperNova for Christmas."
"Hey, what was that last part?" Shadow looked up.
"Oh, nothing..." The person stood up and printed the paper. He folded it and handed it to the Wocky.
"Just enter this in Story telling Competition."
So the young girl finished her submission for the Storytelling Contest by adding, "And they all
lived happily ever after." She then pressed "Submit Query."
The End
