Story Eight Hundred Eighty Ends Friday, May 14

The afternoon sun beat down on Isamurei's head, causing sweat to pool undeer her brow. But she didn't mind it. She was hard at work setting up her backyard for a Tyrannian Victory Day party. It was her first time hosting on her own, and it had to be PERFECT.

The Tyrannian Draik had the food and drinks for the party inside, ready and waiting for be served. Now it was just a matter of getting all the decorations set up on her patio. She wished she had called one of her friends to help her set up the decor, because this was definitely a two-Draik job. She knew her best friend Ebo would have come in an instant. But Isamurei was sometimes too proud to ask for help.

As she was putting in the last tack to hold up the "Tyrannian Victory Day" banner, she heard a mysterious voice whisper her name. It startled her so much that she came crashing down on the ground; her wings couldn't handle the scare. With it, the entire banner dropped to the ground.

She looked around her backyard, but no one was there. She must have been hearing things.

Isamurei heaved a big sigh. "Back to square one," she groaned, picking up the banner again. She started to fly up to hang the banner again.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” said that same mysterious voice, a little louder this time. A figure emerged from the shadow cast by the side of the house.

Isamurei was barely off the ground when she heard this, so she landed on her feet gracefully, and then spun on her heels to stare at the figure.

“Who are you? Why are you in my backyard? Are you TRYING to ruin my party?” She demanded.

The figure was finally cast in sunlight as it emerged fully into the backyard, and Isamurei could see that it was a Stealthy Blumaroo.

“My name is Betrayn. And you cannot host this Tyrannian Victory Day party. I think Tyrannia is in danger, and we need your help.”

Isamurei blinked a few times before flicking her tail and lifting back into the air to try again with the banner.

Betrayn spluttered behind her, indignant.

"Didn't you just hear me?' the Blumaroo asked. They jogged up below Isamurei, and her wingbeats rustled the many black wrappings around their face. "I said, 'Tyrannia is in danger!'"

"You said you THINK Tyrannia is in danger," Isamurei replied. "I have been planning this party for months, and I am not calling it off just because some shifty stranger broke into my backyard and began spouting wild accusations! In fact, you should probably leave. My best friend will be here any minute, and he won't take kindly to a stranger harassing me on my own property."

This was a lie, but Isamurei hoped it would shoo this ruffian along.

"Ebo's not coming, Isamurei."

The banner fell out of her claws once again, but this time, Isamurei swooped down, levelling angrily with Betrayn.

Snout bunched in a snarl, she asked, "What do you know about Ebo? Who are you? Is he in danger? If you've done anything with him, I swear, I'll--"

Betrayn jumped deftly back, unfazed. They brushed a bit of dust off their armour before explaining.

"Ebo and I are...colleagues. Let's just say he got in a little bit over his head, and the consequences might be dire. For him and all of Tyrannia," they said. "If you care about your friend and the life you live right now, you'll come with me."

Isamurei looked at her patio. The food and drinks were waiting in the kitchen, pristine and untouched. Her perfect afternoon was slipping out of her claws, but the worry for her friend was winning out.

"Where do we have to go?" she finally asked.

Betrayn eyed her, sizing her up, before asking, "How close have you ever gotten to the Lair of the Beast?"

Isamurei did her utmost best to turn her gasp of fear into a derisive laugh. "The La-lair of the B-beast?" she coughed, choking on air. "Why would I have ever gone there? It's just a big empty cave." That was what Isamurei chose to believe, anyway. Growing up, plenty of young Neopets in Tyrannia dared each other go venture into the Lair. Isamurei had always been too scared to go, but she had covered up her cowardice by projecting a false disbelief in the legendary beast that supposedly lived there.

"It's not empty," Betrayn said, their mysterious eyes glinting through the folds of their mask. "The beast still lives there, and now Ebo is trapped in the cave, too."

Isamurei wasn't able to hide her terror this time. The thought of her best friend in the clutches of that...that...whatever that thing was that lurked in the cave - what would it do to Ebo? Would he be trapped there forever? Was he hurt? Had he been eaten? "But why would Ebo go there in the first place? How are we supposed to help him?" Isamurei wailed, her wings now trembling with emotion. Betrayn rolled their eyes. "You know Ebo," they said, sounding almost annoyed. "Always wanting to help, always biting off more than he can chew. That's why he went there on his own instead of waiting for me to come with him. As for how we're going to help him...I have a plan. Are you in?"

Isamurei stared into those chilling blue eyes, scared for her friend and also for herself. What was she getting into? She didn't know this Blumaroo, didn't know if they were trustworthy. But Ebo...if he really was in danger, then she had to help him. The party was now the furthest thing from Isamurei's mind. Swallowing down her fear, she stood up straighter and nodded with more confidence than she felt. "Tell me what to do."

“We need to go to the Lair of the Beast immediately. I’ll explain on the way. We haven’t a moment to lose,” Betrayn replied. Isamurei paused, glancing at Betrayn’s armour. “Shouldn’t I find some armour like yours?” she asked, nervously. Betrayn let out a sharp laugh. “We’re going into the Lair of the Beast, and you’re worried about wearing some flimsy armour?” he said, tapping his armour almost derisively. “No, this won’t provide much protection against the beast. I just didn’t have time to change – speaking of which, we’ve wasted enough time already. Let’s go!”

As Isamurei struggled to keep up with the swiftly walking Blumaroo, she wondered how things had changed in her life so quickly. Just 30 minutes ago, her biggest problem was that frustrating banner - which was still lying on the ground, forgotten, with her guests set to arrive shortly. There was no way she would complete everything in time now. But she had no choice. She had to help Edo, if he was in trouble. “We’re on our way now, so… explain!” she snapped at a silent Betrayn.

Betrayn glanced at her, still swiftly walking several paces ahead of her. “Several months ago, Edo and I started noticing a lot of new activity near the Lair. There were more rumours and strange noises at night. Neopets were disappearing. This would be concerning in any situation, but it’s been getting worse by the day. Edo finally went to investigate, and the silly fool never waited for me.”

Isamurei stopped. This didn’t make any sense. “Why wouldn’t Edo tell me? We’re best friends!” she asked, disbelievingly. “Sometimes you don’t want to ask for help from your friends. Isn’t that why you were struggling with that banner when I arrived?” retorted Betrayn. “Regardless, there’s no time to discuss this further. We’re here!”

Isamurei anxiously looked at the giant cave. This was it, she thought. She knew she had to help Edo, but she couldn’t move out of fear. She couldn’t help but think of what the terrifying beast would do if she were found. Betrayn’s quiet voice snapped her back to reality. “We go in, quietly. The beast should be asleep,” he whispered. “That’s your plan?” Isamurei asked incredulously. “Yes. Now be quiet and follow me.” Betrayn replied as he entered the cave.

How will this story end?

...The Draik sighed and followed him inside. After walking through the dusty cave, the two came upon a giant cavern -- and the Beast. The giant winged creature, sleeping soundly, was perched upside down from the roof of the cave, it's head curled upward. It was snoring away.

Betrayn tossed Isamurei a small black orb that looked suspiciously like chewing gum. "You can fly -- I cannot," he hissed at her, his voice a whisper. "I could never get up to the mouth without waking the beast... but you can. Fly up and wait for my signal, then drop the orb in its mouth."

Isamurei nodded affirmatively. She wasn't entirely sure what it would accomplish, but she (for some reason) trusted this mysterious stranger during the rest of her adventure -- she saw no need to stop now.

She flew up and hovered by the mouth of the Beast, which was closed. Of course it would be, why would it sleep with its mouth open? She realized she had to wait for Betrayn to fulfil his part.

Meanwhile, the Blumaroo tossed a throwing star into the Beast's side.

It sprang to life in a shriek, and started to gnash its teeth toward the Draik. Isamurei screamed, and flew about to avoid it -- but then she remembered her task, and carefully tossed the orb between its jaws.

She had done it! The Beast started to sputter, choking on the poison. It began to vomit all whom it had eaten, including, finally, Ebo. Isamurei ran over and hugged her best friend dearly. "You're alive!" she shrieked happily as the Beast keeled over.

"A bit shaken, but yes!" he said.

"Let's flee, in case it wakes up again," shouted the mysterious Blumaroo.

Everyone fled the cave. Isamurei realized most of the eaten had been Neopets she had invited to the party... hmm...

"Look," started Ebo when they were safety, "we all wanted to surprise you by bringing a keepsake from the Lair of the Beast to your Tyrannian Victory Party... but it didn't work out really well, heh."

"I'm just glad you're safe," started the host. "That you're all safe!" she said to everyone.

They arrived back at Isamurei's backyard, and Ebo helped her set up the banner. "Perfect!" she said as the two exchanged glances.

Ebo formally introduced Isamurei to Betrayn, as a long-time colleague and longer friend. They all exchanged knowing glances and mischievous smiles. "He's nice," she said to Ebo. "Very protective of you."

Ebo and Betrayn chuckled.

The host walked about her party. The sun beating down was hot, and the guests were happy. And alive, which made them even happier. Isamurei grinned.

It was a better day than she could have imagined.

The End,
