Story Eight Hundred Forty Seven Ends Friday, August 28
Perhaps this year would be different.
That was what Arthur thought, as he sat quietly on the fountain steps in Neopia Central, passively observing those who came by. Neopets of all species and colours (some painted, some not), hurried past, busy with their lives, shopping bags bursting and young ones dragging their feet behind them, eager to go home and rest.
"Oh, excuse me?"
Arthur turned, startled at the sudden noise beside him, and found himself face to face with a Faerie Aisha. She was dressed immaculately in the latest Mall fashions which should have made her quite beautiful, but the ensemble was spoiled by the frown she had also adorned, as she studied Arthur carefully with big blue eyes.
"Yes?" Arthur said, already anticipating some kind of negative comment. Being Mutant, often people were rude or dismissive, and sometimes even actively afraid of him.
"I was wondering if you could help me with something," the Aisha said, her frown relaxing into a neutral expression. She cast sideways glances about her, as if to check anyone was listening, and then leaned in further. "I have a proposition for you..." |

Arthur cocked his head, curious as to what someone as well to do as this Aisha would want with someone like him.
"...could you accompany me tonight to the Spooky Soiree?" The Aisha paused, her eyes scanning Arthur's face almost like a radar. Arthur couldn't believe his ears. What would someone like her want with a shlump like him? The Spooky Soiree was an annual get together and celebration of all things ghoulish and terrifying. Being a Mutant Ixi himself, Arthur had always dreamed of going but could never afford a ticket.
"Um...ma'am, are you sure you're asking the right person?" Arthur gulped, half expecting to be the brunt of an annoying joke.
"Of course! You're the perfect plus one!" the Faerie Aisha squealed, grabbing Arthur's hooves and smiling. "Please you must, I have an extra ticket and you would be a perfect date!"
Arthur couldn't help but be enamoured by the Aisha's infectious enthusiasm.
"Umm...yeah, I'll go. Why not?" Arthur stammered, still somewhat unsure. The Faerie Aisha jumped up and down in delight.
"Oh, thank you, thank you! You don't know how much you've helped me out! My name is Trista, and you?"
"I'm Arthur. It's nice to meet you!"
Trista's smile made Arthur's heart skip a beat and he couldn't help but mimic her optimism.
"Wow...the Spooky Soiree. I never thought I'd be able to go. I have to tell my fire..."
Before Arthur could finish, Trista's eyes widened and she hastily shook her head.
"No, no, no, you mustn't tell a soul! You simply can't!" Trista's smile disappeared and had returned to that familiar frown he met her with.
"Why? What's wrong?" Arthur questioned.
Trista leaned in again and took a deep breath, "Well..."

"...you see this year the Spooky Soiree is being hosted by none other than Count Von Roo himself! By royal decree anyone caught speaking of the guest list will be punished beyond imagination!"
Trista glanced out of the corner of her eye to see Arthur's reaction. She thought to herself how perfect Arthur was to accompany her to the Soiree, especially considering the special theme this year!
Arthur gulped audibly, terrified at just the thought of being in the same room as the Count.
The familiar smile plasters itself back onto Trista's face as she observes poor Arthurs trepidation. She is relieved because she can tell Arthur really does want to go, despite his fear!
"Oh, there is no need to be afraid, the Count takes his job as the host very seriously! It will be a night to remember that's for sure! But remember you mustn't utter a single word to anyone about it!"
Arthur didn't look entirely convinced, but he wasn't about to let his cowardice stop him from what could be his only chance to see Count Von Roo with his own two eyes.
"I'm not afraid, but everyone is going to ask where I'm going, especially when I have to dress up! How will I keep it from everyone?"
Trista's smile grew wider as her eyes lit up and she laughed gleefully.
"I'm glad you asked! Here's exactly what you tell them..."

"Tell them you were scouted by a talent agency that was in Neopia Central looking for a model for this year's Mutant Fashions collection. For the next few days, you'll have a team of elite stylists providing you with expensive clothing, accessories, and hairstyling. So you might look obviously different than usual, right? But who really understands fashion anyways?"
Everything Trista said made perfect sense, and it was a clever way to deflect suspicion. Arthur nodded slowly. "I guess that would work," he replied, his voice still betraying a hint of uncertainty.
"That's the spirit!" Trista exclaimed, with no trace of sarcasm, only pure excitement about the upcoming Soiree. She sat beside Arthur on the steps of the fountain, playfully running her paw through the thick green fur on his head. "You know," she said, giggling, "I could be your elite stylist! So that part of the story is true." The Mutant Ixi finally cracked a smile. He turned to look at his reflection in the fountain and saw his fur ruffled and wild where Trista had touched it.
"Yeah, some stylist," he snorted. Gleefully. "Were you going for the Dr. Sloth look?" He stared at his reflection, trying to smooth the flyaway fur with both hooves.
"No, but that's not a bad idea! It is the Spooky Soiree after all!"
"Uh, so...what am I going to wear, anyway? I've never been to a Soiree before," Arthur mumbled, "and it's not like it's easy to find clothes that fit a Mutant."
With her smile as unfaltering as ever, Trista replied, "Just leave that to me! You'll be the best dressed for sure!" Arthur looked at the fashionable Aisha, with her glittering jewellery, impeccable makeup, and lace gown. He knew Trista would do a fantastic job getting him decked out for the party, but he also knew that she would be the best dressed. For the first time, he began to wonder about this mysterious Faerie Aisha, with her expensive clothes and an invite to the most exclusive party in Neopia. Who was she, exactly?
"That sounds great, even if you do try to turn me into Dr. Sloth," Arthur said, absently running a hoof over his head, the fur still in a state of rebellion. "But Trista, can I ask you something...?" How will this story end?

"Why did you choose me again? I'm just a...a mutant. No one ever spares us a second glance." Arthur turned away, not wanting to meet Trista's eyes. Trista's smile dropped from her face as she sympathized with Arthur. She reached out and turned his head back to face her.
"I believe everyone deserves a chance." she began slowly. "Everyone has a hidden beauty. Sometimes we just don't look hard enough. And today, I want to give you a chance."
"T-thank you. Thank you very much." Arthur whispered with tears in his eyes.
Trista's eyes brightened. "It's nothing! Now follow me, we're going shopping!"
The two went from shop to shop, sometimes buying one item, sometimes none. Trista made Arthur try on countless items either nodding firmly in approval or a quick shake of her head and murmuring to herself. Eventually, she settled with a final addition to his outfit. She led Arthur to a building across town, one that he had always seen but never knew what was inside. Arthur's jaw dropped when they went in. From floor to ceiling, there were clothes, accessories, makeup, anything anyone would ever need for fashion. Trista laughed at his reaction and ushered him into a changing room. She dropped all of the shopping bags at his feet and instructed him to put on everything while she went to grab a few finishing things.
A few minutes later, Arthur cautiously stepped out of the fitting room. There was a strange green-grey Aisha waiting outside.
"Oh you look marvellous! Quite stunning if I say so myself!" the Aisha squealed, making Arthur jump.
"Trista? Is that you?" he asked.
"Of course silly! It's my outfit for the night. I call it 'Late Prom Queen-Reborn'," she replied as she led Arthur to a nearby room and sat him down. "And you, you will be my 'Prom King Frankenstein'. Together, we are the Resurrected Duo." And with that, she flew around a makeup table, dabbing and drawing on his face.
"And we're done!" Trista pulled Arthur over to a full-length mirror.
Arthur was stunned when he saw himself. A dazzling suit covered most of his body and a pair of dress shoes covered his hooves. But the suit was slashed as if brambles had been raked across multiple times and the shoes were scuffed beyond repair. One even had a chunk missing from it. His face had a fake stitch running across it among other small pockets and scars, thanks to Trista's makeup. He felt incredible as he looked over every detail of his attire. He turned around just in time for Trista to finish her makeup. She was dressed in a breathtaking white gown that swept behind her and stood out from the green-grey shade of makeup on her skin. She wore white contacts that gave her an eerie zombie look.
"Let's go!" Arthur grinned. They headed off and were greeted at the door by Count Von Roo, himself.
He nodded silently at the two of them as they passed. Trista smiled brightly but Arthur was as stiff as a board with nervousness, being so close to the Count himself.
"He likes the costumes," she whispered gleefully.
As the night went on, Arthur gradually relaxed with Trista by his side and met many Neopians that travelled far and wide to attend the Spooky Soiree. He knew this would truly be a night to remember. The End,
