Story Eight Hundred Twenty Five Ends Friday, July 19

The salty air stung deep in Norman's throat and eyes as he sat with a fishing pole in hand. Good thing he'd applied more than enough sunscreen, the elderly Bruce thought idly, careful baiting his rod again.

When he told his family he'd rather spend his retirement out in the middle of the ocean fishing than go to a beach vacation somewhere, they assumed he was crazy. But as he basked in the sun and relished the peace that the vast blue depths had to offer him, he knew he'd made the right choice.

The peace, however, did not last long. It was shattered as Norman heard the sound of water gurgling urgently nearby. Confused, he looked to the left of his tiny rowboat to see a whirlpool forming...

Abandoning his bait and rod, Norman quickly picked up his oars and began frantically rowing away from the whirlpool. He thought he had made it far enough when he paused to look behind him and was shocked to see the sail of a huge ship emerging from the depths of the whirlpool and it was coming right towards him!

Rowing faster and harder than he'd ever rowed in his life, Norman did his best to get out of the way of the mysterious ship that had just appeared out of nowhere.

The ship was now in full view and Norman, who was exhausted from his escape attempt, stopped to stare in awe at the massive wooden structure that now stood silently in front of him. Nervous but curious of what he might find, Norman called out, "Ahoy there! Anyone aboard?"

At first there was nothing, no sound or signs of movement, but just as Norman was preparing to head back to shore to report what he'd seen, he heard shuffling on the deck. He slowly turned his gaze back to the ship, shocked to see what was now staring back at him.

It was a horrifying vision of his future self, ravaged by the currents of time!

Wait, no, it couldn't be! The figure moved a few paces, standing in the way of Norman and the harsh glare of the sea. It was a smaller, wrinklier Bruce wielding a mop twice his size.

"Ahoy there," the wizened newcomer greeted Norman in a startlingly strong voice. "Managed quite a ways out in that thing, didn't you?" Smiling, he pointed at the rowboat with his mop handle.

"Sturdiest boat I could find," Norman called back.

"I bet. Why don't you come on up and tell me more about it?"

The older Bruce shuffled out of sight briefly and returned with what looked like an enormous pile of rotting laundry.

"Here!"

The mouldering laundry stretched into a long arc in the air and reached Norman's boat with a CLANK. He realized, with a little embarrassment, that it was a rope ladder, its ends weighed down with rusty iron Peophins. With much coaxing and instructions from the stranger and thankfully, minimal climbing (counterbalanced by much pulling by the other Bruce), Norman boarded the enormous ship.

"Thank you. Norman, by the way."

"Ah yes, Norman. I'm Borolas." Borolas looked grayer and more tattered than Norman had expected from a distance. He took Norman's proffered fin, gave it two firm shakes, and did not let go. "One of the newbies, huh?"

Norman was offended. "Well, I started rowing with my father at the age of..."

Borolas's bony grip tightened. "Thought you could get away, huh? Thought we were too kelp-brained to catch up to you?" He smiled a crooked smile at Norman without blinking.

As Norman tried to pull himself free from Borolas's grasp without looking flustered, he heard more shuffling. He looked up. All around them, old, frail-looking Neopets milled onto the deck out of nowhere, wearing eye patches or hideous grins...

..."There must be some misunderstanding," Norman tried bravely. "I just came out on a fishing vacation."

The other elderly Neopets continued to shift closer, still leering at him. No one appeared to realize that Norman was not a part of this geriatric crew.

"I'm sure you must have, ah, gotten me confused with another seafaring Bruce of... of a certain age. Honest mistakes, eh?"

Borolas cackled as he continued to hold on tightly to Norman's fin. "Nonsense. Thought you could escape old Greybeard, did you? Well, think again!"

Greybeard? Norman had never heard of such a being. Nor had he ever heard of a pirate - for what else could they be - ship full of elderly Neopets. What could they possibly get up to aboard this vessel?

"How can I think about escaping someone I have never even heard of?" Norman asked. "I thought your name was Borolas?"

"Aye, I am Borolas. Greybeard is our stalwart captain, and he wishes to speak to you, in his cabin below deck."

Two of the Neopets closest to Norman seized his shoulders. Their frail appearances were a sharp contrast to the surprisingly strong grip he found himself in. Only when Norman was secured between two crew-mates did Borolas finally relinquish his grip on his fin.

"I'm telling you, this is a mistake!" Norman cried, but his words fell on deaf ears as he was forcibly walked down into the bowels of the strange ship to meet its captain...

Norman squeezed his eyes shut as the crew-mates ushered him down the dark, narrow hall. He suspected his fate would be unpleasant, but felt unready to accept the specifics.

They crew-mates suddenly stopped short, lessening their grips on Norman's tender fins. He gently opened his eyes and found himself at the end of the hall in front of a narrow steel door, as rusted with age as the ship's crew.

"In you go," said one the mate to his left. Norman felt his fear dissipate from his frail body and found the courage to push the door. It let out a long creak and revealed a tiny office with a grey-bearded pirate sitting behind a worn wooden desk.

"Have a seat," Greybeard said, gesturing to a wooden stool with a missing leg, "mind your balance on that missing leg... pirates and all!" he let out a chuckle.

The defeated bruce set himself upon the sturdy edge of the stool and stared at the pirate behind the desk. "Greybeard..." he said, suddenly remembering having heard the name in childhood.

"The grim reaper of the sea!" he smiled back. I hope my mates didn't scare you, our job is to make sure you're not alone."

"Not alone?" Norman asked, confused, "But I'm not..."

"Dead?" asked Greybeard, raising a brow. He grasped a dirty mirror off his desk in a frame shaped like a ship's wheel and handed it to Norman.

Norman squeaked his fin across the glass and peered in. His skin had begun greying and he indeed resembled the crew upon this ship. "How?"

"You relaxed into a deep sleep out on the water," Greybeard replied, his eyes moistening, "Best way, if you ask me! But enough of this talk now. You know there's another rower waiting to see you, and he's been waiting quite a while." Suddenly it all made sense to Norman.

"Bring him in!" called Greybeard with a smile, and the narrow, rusted steel door opened once more with yet another aged pirate bathed in light in its threshold.

"Father!?"
