The Usul was the fairest in Neopia Central and she knew it. She strutted around as if
she were princess of everything, and as if all her fellow Neopians were covered in mud
or dung or something.
She had no friends. She didn't need any. Who needs friends when you're the most
happening, most beautiful Neopet around? she'd think.
One day, she was in a furious hurrry to get to the Grooming Parlour to buy some new kind
of soap that had just come out, when someone bumped into her. She got up, angrily
dusting herself off, and glared at the dingiest, mangiest looking Lupe she had ever
seen...

... "Hello!?!? Can't you see that I'm in a hurry," said Melissa, which was her name. She
pushed him out of the way and stuck her nose high up into the air as she walked on.
Couldn't that Lupe just tell that this girl was "on fire" and that ruining her rep
would just rip away the whole day? She walked down the path to the Grooming Parlour.
She walked inside and saw the dirtiest looking Neopets she had ever seen. Staying
far out of their way, she walked up to the register.
"Hello, I'd like to buy the new soap that is supposed to be totally all the new rave,"
said Melissa.
The shopkeeper nodded and handed her a small bag as she flopped down a pouch of Neopoints on the counter.
"Keep the change." She walked out of the store and flung her hair
back out of her face. On her walk home more and more of the nasty and dirty Neopets were
showing up.
Melissa rushed up to her bathroom in front of her glittering, glorious mirror. She took
out the soap. It was kind of smelly, but who cared?
She rinsed it a bit under her "sparkling" water. She rubbed the bar all over her body,
not even caring about anything else. She opened her eyes to look into the mirror. Now
she knew why everyone was dirty and disgusting...

...She screamed and backed away quickly from her mirror, knocking over her favourite gold
eyeshadow onto the floor, scattering the powder all over the white tiled floor. She
looked at her reflection, horrified.
"I'm MUDDY!" she shrieked, so loud that even Ooragoo in Tyrannia could hear her.
"My beautiful complexion!" she whined, breaking down into tears. "I'm so UGLY!"
She quickly went back to her bathtub and turned the hot water on, filling it with soapy
bubbles. She frantically scrubbed herself all over with her Peophin soap, ignoring the
new mud soap lying on the floor. When she felt as if she had rubbed her skin raw, she
stepped out of the tub and sighed satisfactorily.
"THAT gets rid of THAT!" she said triumphantly, and looked in her mirror again. She
screamed, and backed up, THIS time slipping on her spilled gold eyeshadow and knocking
over a whole box of bottled water. The mud stayed stuck to her. She reached for the
wrapper that the soap came in and read the instructions. She read on, horrified. The
label read...

...'Not for beautiful or snobby people. Wears off if humbleness is found in a Neopet.
Not our fault if you get all muddy.'
"Ahhhhhhhh!!! What does humbleness mean?!?! I'll never get healed back to my
beautiful self!" cried Melissa.
Her maid came in and saw her. She fainted at the sight of muddy footprints. Melissa
stepped over her as a carpet and wiped her feet on her. When she had done that, the mud
grew.
She put on a green invisihat but took it off after two seconds. "I wouldn't be caught dead
wearing THIS piece of junk. Ah. Here's something better." She put on a fancy invisihat
which was derived from the green one except she had put some rainbows on it and some
fake shining jewels.
She left her mansion and stealthily walked to the Grooming Parlour avoiding all
the other Neopets. When she saw some of them, they were absolutely beautiful!
"What is the meaning of this!" Melissa shouted. She stomped her feet across the field
and headed inside the Grooming Parlour, only to be bumped again by a Lupe...

...The Lupe was the most handsome creature she had ever seen. His coat was shiny, and
delicately laced with a flame pattern. Melissa was horrified that she should be seen
in such a manner, and hid her face.
"Why are you hiding now?" the Lupe asked in a gentle voice. "You were in quite a rush
to brush past me earlier today."
Melissa couldn't believe her furry ears. After all, the only Lupe she saw earlier was
mangy, and quite not worth her time. "But... I'm ugly now... I have to hide."
The Lupe snorted, and spoke again, patting her with a reassuring paw. "True beauty
comes from within. You are ugly because you only see the ugliness in others, and care
nothing for them beyond what they can do to foster your vanity."
The Usul was struck by his words, and humbled...

...Humility. She let the word roll around her tongue for a few moments. The word was awkward;
it had the feeling of a foreign language. Melissa walked away from the Lupe. She needed to
recover from the shock of being accused of vanity. She also needed to think, and think hard,
as it was a practice Melissa was unaccustomed to. With the Lupe now out of her sight, her
face hardened and a smile opened up, she began to laugh. "Why should I have to go and change
my entire lifestyle over a stupid bar of soap," she thought. She changed directions and headed
towards the Beauty Bringers soap company. Still, as she walked she was filled an anger that
such an indignity could have happened to her, and sinking feeling that perhaps the Lupe had
been right and that (perish the thought) something really was wrong with her personality. As
she approached the tall brick building of the Soap Company's' all thoughts fled her mind but
one: "It must have been a faulty product."
The manager smiled and asked Melissa to sit down.
"So what's the problem?"
"This company sold me a faulty product," Melissa began, "When I went to use it, well...
you can see what happened."
"Surely you saw the warning label."
Melissa suddenly felt dizzy...

...and her stomach wretched uncomfortably; she had to take a few steady breaths before
she could utter, "You mean... it's true? What the label says, I mean."
The manager smiled slightly, and could almost be mistaken for a smirk, "The label
was put there for a reason."
Dumbstruck, Melissa sat, unmoving, gaping at the manager in complete shock. Realising
that her muddy complexion was not the result of a faulty product, but her own self-obsessed
lifestyle, she couldn't bear to be in the smug-looking manager's presence any longer.
Jumping up from her seat as if it had caught fire, Melissa fled the room...

...No, no, no! Melissa thought as she rushed outside, but even when she hit
the cool afternoon air, she didn't stop. She ran far and fast.
Too many faces. Too many beautiful, clean faces. And they all seem to be mocking
her. They had the nerve to mock her
Tears blurred her vision as she continued to run through the town. But she hardly
took notice of them as they streamed down her face. Her still muddy, once beautiful
face. That realization made her sobs come in harder and faster.
When it became to much for her to handle, she slowed her pace and noticed she was
a little ways out of town. A gorgeous meadow lay out before her. She sniffled, too
caught up in her grief to notice any type of beauty in the world, and headed for the
nearest tree.
She sat down in a huff, not giving a care that it might be dirty. She was practically
a mud patch, so why should she care anymore if she sat in one?
Her eyes took in the grassy field and the flower patch near her. Not caring of their
beauty she turned sharply and refused to acknowledge them. But when a small light glowed
from behind, curiosity got the best of her...

...It was an enormous space ship. Melissa didn't even know how big it was, but
she didn't really care what was on the outside. She just wanted to know what was inside.
Quickly she wiped her tears off her face and ran for the door of the space ship. There was
a giant flash of light and the door to the ship opened. Everything was silent.
The being inside was an alien. It was also a Neopet, an alien Lupe. It was hideous;
uglier than Melissa, but she didn't mind.
"Eeeep! It's adorable!" she screamed and ran towards it. The Lupe didn't mind her either. He had
silver fur and spoke in Neopian. "Oh beautiful Usul, my name is Gondowan," said the Lupe, "would you like to live
with us on our alien planet?"
"Of course!" said Melissa, and then the space ship flew off. Melissa and Gondowan lived happily
ever after for many, many years. They also adopted three very ugly pets of their own.
