Story Seven Hundred Twenty Five Ends Friday, April 15

It was a warm Friday afternoon, or at least, it was warm by Terror Mountain standards. That's what Dominique tried to remind herself of as she wandered out into the freezing cold air and made her way up to the top of the Mountain. She'd been in Terror Mountain for nearly two months now, but she still hadn't gotten used to the weather. In all honesty, she didn't expect to, having come from Mystery Island and all. The Techo grumbled under her breath as she boarded the ski lift. Stupid Faeries. Stupid apprenticeships. Stupid stupid stupid. She was just about to mutter "stupid Queen Fyora" when she caught herself... she still wasn't quite sure just how good the Faerie Queen's hearing was, and the last thing she needed right now was to get into more trouble. Still, it had been the Fearie Queen who had sent her to study under Taelia, despite her protests. Why? Well, that was the question. Dominque had never really been given a reason, other than that "it would be good for her," but she suspected it had something to do with an incident that occurred during last year's Faerie Festival. Dominique groaned. She had had one job, and she still managed to mess it up.

So here she was now, just about to get off the ski lift at the top of Terror Mountain, on her way to another cold, tiring, cold, boring, did she mention cold? day of studing with Taelia. The Techo slid off the lift with a small jump, and shaking herself off, headed towards the Faerie's over-sized igloo.

Shuffling through the snow, it wasn't long before Dominique arrived. She shoved the door open, brushed off a light layer of snow that had started falling just moments ago, and reached for the extra warm blanket that she kept stowed beside the door. Wrapping it around her, she walked into towards the Study.

She knew something was wrong when she felt warmth coming from the living room.

Puzzled, Dominique quietly stepped towards the source of warmth emitting from the living room when all of a sudden... *CRASH*

"TAELIA!!" a Fire Faerie screamed.

Another crash, followed by a fireball barely whizzing past the Techo's head. Quickly, Dominique turned and ran towards the nearest piece of sturdy furniture and slid underneath for cover. Taelia soon appeared, shielding herself with a Snowager plushie, frantically begging the Fire Faerie to calm down.

"I didn't do it Eithne, I swear!" said Taelia as she stalled for time by chucking other pieces of furniture into the indignant Faerie's path.

"If YOU didn't, then who DID?" raged the Fire Faerie, getting ready to pitch another fireball.

"I don't know!" Taelia said, ready to throw a frosty table when she noticed Dominique was underneath it. The two exchanged awkward glances.

"All I wanted," Eithne seethed, "was to have a long, relaxing vacation. But YOU ruined it!"

"I wasn't the one that made it snow!" Taelia said, ducking underneath another fireball. "What reason would I have to blast Mystery Island with a blizzard?"

"I don't know, but you're the only one who could have done it." Eithne shouted, aiming her magic at Taelia. "This will be the last time you'll ever mess up my SPA DAY--"

"E-excuse me?" Dominique whimpered.

Both Faeries turned towards Dominique.

Shakily, the frightened Techo pointed her finger to the Igloo's entrance.

"There's someone at the door..."

Tahlia and Eithne turned around and faced the Igloo's entrance, and immediately exchanged horrified glances.

"You need to go, Dominique!" They hissed in unison, the previous fight they were having forgotten.

"But why?" Dominique had not gotten a clear view of who was at the door, and was both curious and terrified.

"Go!" They said, and Dominique was hurried out of the back door with only the Snowager plushie and a blanket.

Defeated, Dominique trudged through the snow, aiming to go to the east where she knew was a lodge that could give her shelter. Halfway there, she hesitated. Surely, if the faeries were scared, it was something bad at the door.

But what was it?

Curiosity overtook Dominique as she silently ran back the direction she came, to the igloo, and as soundless as a mouse, looked in side.

When she looked, she saw the two faeries shakily confronting...

Oh no.

Jhudora's silhouette filled the igloo doorway. It was as though the snow around her had been burnt away; the ground was singed with a purple glow. She had her arms crossed, her smile almost a sneer.

"Taelia, Eithne," she said, tilting her head to the side, "Weren't you expecting me?"

"I should have known," Taelia mumbled, her hands trembling. Jhudora laughed.

"Should have known what? That only an extremely powerful faerie could have cast such magic?"

Eithne snorted.

"Extremely powerful? When was the last time Fyora allowed you to do anything remotely powerful?"

Jhudora's smirk disappeared, her folded arms now down at her sides, her hands clenching into fists. Dominique felt her stomach leap into her throat. If she didn't act soon, something even worse was going to happen...

"Jhudora," she said, her voice cracking. "I..is there anything I can do for you?"

The dark faerie turned to face Dominique, who was now beginning to regret opening her mouth.

"What do you mean?" Jhudora quipped, her eyes narrowing.

"I... I mean, is there a quest that you would like me to do? Can I bring you anything to make your, um, your mood any lighter?"

Taelia and Eithne were now shaking their heads fervently, but Dominique's confidence was returning. If she could pacify the dark faerie, she may be able to persuade her to lift the magic surrounding Mystery Island. It may also look good to Queen Fyora...

"Well," Jhudora said, running a thin, spindle-like finger through her hair, "There is one thing that I've been after..."

"What is it?" Dominique asked nervously. She'd never done a quest for Jhudora, but she was a dark faerie. They usually wanted toys, right? Hopefully it was something she could buy fairly cheaply. Otherwise she might have to borrow a few neopoints...

Jhudora paused. "It's an... item of some importance. It is currently in the possession of the Snowager. Unlike his other treasures, however, the item is hidden in a tunnel near the back of the cave."

"What... what does this item look like?" Dominique wasn't looking forward to braving the Snowager, but if it would persuade Jhudora to undo her spell, it would be worth the effort.

"Oh, you'll know when you see it," Jhudora said with a curious smile. "It's probably the only thing in that tunnel apart from the ice and rocks."

Dominique was puzzled. How would she know if she had the right item? She thought again of Queen Fyora. She wanted to return to Faerieland so badly. "Very well, I will retrieve the item," Dominique answered with resolve. Taelia and Eithne both looked suddenly fearful.

"Excellent. I'll just wait here until you return." Jhudora said with a triumphant smile.

"You want me to go right now?" Dominique asked nervously. She'd hoped that she could have some time to prepare, or at least talk to Taelia and Eithne before she left.

"Why, yes. The sooner I have the item, the better," Jhudora said, still smiling. "I would be very, very upset if I had to wait a long time."

Dominique was beginning to regret accepting the quest, but now she had no choice but to follow through. She couldn't risk making Jhudora any angrier. So she braced herself, then went out into the cold again. Luckily the Ice Caves weren't too far from Taelia's igloo.

Before she knew it, Dominique had reached the precarious ledge leading to the Snowager's cavern. Dominique stood outside, trying to gather her courage. A small but insistent voice in the back of her mind was telling her to turn around and go back to the igloo. Dominique brushed this thought aside, and in a burst of determination walked into the cavern. It was darker inside, and it took a few moments for her eyes to adjust. When they did, the first thing she was...

... towering stacks of items which looked like they were going to fall off the top of the huge pile at any moment. In the centre of the hoard of treasures laid the hulking figure of the Snowager, fortunately fast asleep.

Dominique tiptoed as quietly as she could across the icy floor. Halfway through the trip to the other side of the vast cavern, the Snowager woke up and looked right at her. She froze immediately, knowing that it wasn't a smart move to stop but she wasn't able to come up with an alternative plan in such a short moment. Fear built up within her as she awaited her demise but the creature just moaned and went back to sleep. How lucky she was to escape the Snowager's wrath!

Quickly, she dashed to the other side of the cavern and caught side of a tunnel that was partially covered by a heap of valuable items. She made her way to it and through the small gap between the treasure mound and the hole into the tunnel.

There was enough light from the cave to make out her surroundings. The short tunnel ended in a cul-de-sac but that wasn't what she was focused on. Situated right before the wall of rock at the tunnel end was a large protruding rock with a large, purple cushion placed on it, on top of which sat a ...

Very rare item indeed; in fact Dominique would never have believed it possible except it was right in front of her eyes! She slowly slid across the floor, only pausing once when the Snowager snorted in it's sleep; until finally she was in front of the purple cushion. "No wonder you wanted it!" she whispered under her breath.

With a brief glance to make sure the Snowager was still sleeping; she then proceeded to take up the delicate item and carefully make her escape. Who in the world would believe that there was a crystal figurine of Jhudora dancing with an unknown male...and she was smiling like she was the happiest person in the world!

For a brief moment the idea of having stolen something made her feel bad...but she told herself it was for a good cause and hopefully would make things right in the end.

Soon(perhaps not soon enough as she was still really cold) she could see the large igloo and the sight made her tremble with doubt ...what if she hadn't gotten the right item? What if...

With a deep breath and a straightening of her shoulders she walked forward and put her hand on the doorknob. "I'm back!"

..Jhudora was sitting in Taelia's scorched kitchen when Dominque peeked her head around the door frame. The other two faeries were standing and, for a moment, the Techo wasn't sure that Eithne was convinced that Jhudora had really been behind the sudden snow on Mystery Island. Regardless, none of them had noticed her triumphant return.

She stepped sheepishly into the room, the figurine concealed carefully behind her back. If Jhudora wanted this badly enough to mess with the weather almost halfway around the globe, she probably didn't want either of the other faeries to see it.

Despite her entrance, neither of the three faeries looked at her. She coughed once, twice, three times before they glanced in her direction. Jhudora jumped up from her seat and ushered Dominique into the other room.

"Did you get it?" she hissed. She sounded like a Bartamus, not a powerful dark faerie.

"Yes," Dominique pulled the figurine out form behind her back, careful not to flash it to Taelia or Eithne.

Jhudora's mouth dropped open. Fury danced in her eyes. She reached out, grabbed the figurine, and smashed it against the wall of the living room before the Techo had a chance to say or do anything.

"I...I...I..." Dominique started.

"Why would you think, for a moment, that I would want that...that reminder?"

"But it was the only thing in the cave!" Dominique protested. "You said..."

"It was the only thing?" Jhudora's lip curled. "Tell me, little Techo, what was that abomination resting on?"

...

"Wha-- What? You can't be serious! A purple cushion?" Dominique whisper-shouted, careful not to let the other Faeries hear.

Jhudora's face twisted into an expression of pure loathing. "Are you blind? Of course not a purple cushion! A solid gold stand made for Queen Fyora herself!"

Dominique started to laugh. "I think you're mistaken. I passed that stand-- it was on the Snowager's stomache!"

"Stop it, you silly girl. Of course it wasn't. Stop laughing! Stop it!"

But Dominique couldn't stop. The whole situation suddenly seemed so funny-- the Snowager's cave, the crystal figure, even Jhudora's anger because she was wrong. It had seemed terrifying at the time, but looking back it was just amusing.

Eithne made her way over with a puzzled expression on her face. "What in the name of Fyora is going on? You don't seem too happy, Jhudora."

The dark Faerie scowled. "Just forget it, will you? I'll get what I want myself." And she started flouncing out of the Igloo.

"What about the Mystery Island snowfall?" asked Eithne, not forgetting the roots of these strange happenings.

"It's temporary; tomorrow it'll be gone!" yelled Jhudora, not even bothering to turn around.

Dominique, who had finally managed to stop giggling, said, "Well, that was weird, wasn't it?"

"Yeah," answered Eithne slowly, "Yeah, it was. By the way, Taelia says you can have today off."

As Dominique strolled back to her cottage, she thought, "Maybe studying with Taelia won't be so boring after all..."

The End.
