Story Six Hundred Eighty Three Ends Friday, December 5
"So, that's something I've always been wondering. Why is it spelled F-A-E-R-I-E? Shouldn't it be..."
Oscar's thoughts were suddenly cut off when he felt his shoe catch onto a hole in the ground. He stumbled and fell forward some, but was luckily able to avoid landing face first on the ground with a splat.
"Oh my... good thing no one saw that," the Ruki said aloud, brushing at his front and having lost his train of thought. "I'd better watch where I'm going."
Not two steps later, as he passed by the Rainbow Pool on his way home, a newly-painted swamp gas Techo walked by and gave him a friendly wave. Oscar waved back, but the stench was almost too much to bear! He at least waited until he had passed by before he gasped for air and waved his hand in front of his face.
"EEEWWWW!" he said. "Ugh, I don't know why anyone would think that is an appealing color. How random."
The woozy Ruki took a few more steps but then bumped into a large green fellow. He was about to apologize for his rudeness when he noticed that it was the Tax Beast. Needless to say, Oscar wasn't getting that can of Neocola he was planning on picking up.
Man... he thought, patting his poor pockets as the Tax Beast walked away. Things sure are getting random around here. It's almost like...
Before he could finish his statement, a look of horror crossed his eyes. Boochi was right in front of him and pointing his ray gun right at him!
"AACK!" he shouted out and ducked down, just as the Bruce fired.
Thankfully, the shot missed and harmlessly blasted the tree behind him.
"Not again!" Boochi said. "My aim has been horrible lately! It's all that Dr. Landlebrot's fault!"
"Dr. Landlebrot?" Oscar asked aloud.
"Yeah, haven't you heard?" Boochi said, kicking a stone on the ground. "Ever since he showed up, things around here are getting a lot more random, except I can't hit anyone with my baby ray! Tell me how that's supposed to be random!"
The Ruki stood up.
"Wait, so it's his fault that all of this random stuff has been going on around Neopia?" he asked.
Boochi nodded.
"Well," he said, "I could do with some more order in my life. How about we go to him and get him to tone it down some?"
The Bruce's eyes lit up, but then soon went dour again.
"There's just one problem with that..." |

"...it wouldn't fix anything."
"How so?" Oscar asked, wincing as a mutant Kadoatie began to whine in the distance. He fished in his pocket for some Neopoints to pay the owner to take it away, but the Tax Beast had apparently filched his last few Neopoints.
"It's not about hitting my targets..." Boochi asserted and then paused before resuming. "Okay, it's a little bit about hitting my targets... but it's mostly about the respect. I used to be feared. Respected! Now I'm a laughingstock!"
"That's not true," Oscar said. Boochi looked up at him with a self-righteous frown as two young Kacheeks strolled by.
"If I was still feared and respected, then they would never have walked so close to me! They would've been hiding behind something the second they'd seen who I was!"
"Maybe you just need a new reason to be respected? I have an idea." Oscar turned to walk away, motioning for the baby Bruce to follow. "I know someone who'll probably be the perfect one to help."
Boochi followed Oscar to the Neopian Plaza, but once they arrived at their destination he glanced at the Ruki with doubt. "Isn't this the..."

"... Alien Aisha Vending Machine?"
"That's right," Oscar said. "I've known the Aisha working here for a while now. This came to mind when I noticed some Brain Kebabs falling from the sky not too long ago. I've never really seen the appeal for that type of stuff, though."
Boochi nodded in agreement. "How will this help us, though?" he asked.
"Well, he is an Alien Aisha," Oscar replied. "He must have some means of space transportation. Look, there he is! Let's go see."
Happily sitting behind his machine, the Alien Aisha turned around.
"Oscar! How've you been?" he asked.
"I've been well, thanks," Oscar answered. "How are things with you?"
"Great, just great," the Alien Aisha replied. "With all those new Random Events, lots of Neopians have been coming to visit my machine!"
Indeed, they were. There was already a long line of Neopians eagerly waiting to try their luck in the game of chance, hoping to find a paint brush pop out of the bottom of the machine.
"Business has been booming!" the Aisha exclaimed. "I love these new Random Events!"
"On that note, we have a question for you," Boochi said. "We were wondering if you knew a way we would be able to go visit Dr Landelbrot himself."
"Oh! I have just the thing for you," the Aisha answered. "However, my ship is very costly to run. If you were to borrow it, then I would have to ask a favour of you."
"What would that be?" Oscar questioned.
"Well..."

"...you'll have to find your own fuel. I don't have time to fill her up with all of these customers waiting."
Oscar sighed. "How many gallons of gas do you think it'll take to get to Dr Landelbrot?"
"Gas?" the vending machine Aisha asked with a smirk. "My ship doesn't run on gas. It runs on alternate fuel sources."
Oscar looked toward Boochi, who shrugged his small shoulders.
"It runs off compost," the Alien Aisha explained. "It's good for the environment and, lucky for you, it's very cheap... practically free if you can find it."
"So, where do we find this free compost?" Boochi asked.
The Aisha vendor was momentarily distracted when a Neopet inserted a Nerkmid into the machine. There was a tinkling bell and, for a moment, the Neopet thought a paint brush might appear, but instead received a Calamari Tongue Wrap. The Aisha looked somewhat relieved as he turned back toward the two other Neopets.
"Well," he continued, "there are plenty of eateries around Neopia... just ask for their trash. Actually, most of the time, you don't even need to ask."
"Let me get this straight -- you want us to go dumpster diving?!?" Boochi cried. "No way."
"Think of your reputation," Oscar prodded.
Just then, two female Blumaroos bounced by on their way to join the vending machine line. "Aww," one of them said. "Such a cute little baby Bruce!"
"Let's go find some compost," Boochi growled...

...As the Bruce and Ruki were leaving, they heard the Alien Aisha shout out, "Oh, I forgot to mention -- you can also try the The Meridell Rubbish Dump!"
Boochi and Oscar looked at each other in disgust at the mere thought of going there. The smell was so putrid that you could smell the dump from miles away.
"I think that's going to be a last resort for us," Oscar said... with which Boochi agreed.
"So, where should we try first?" Boochi asked.
"I was thinking that Pizzaroo might be a good bet," Oscar replied. "They must have plenty of grease and fat in their dumpster."
"That sounds good to me... maybe we can also ask the shopkeeper if he has anything he wants to toss out?" the baby Bruce said as he began to walk toward Pizzaroo.
Oscar thought that sounded like a good idea. The shopkeeper may not have even thrown away everything yet, since it was still early in the day.
"Okay, then. Let's get to it," the Ruki said, trying to sound positive...

...As the two got closer to Pizzaroo, they heard a clap of thunder. The duo then looked up to see a clear sky. Within moments, a whole bunch of little green Petpets started to come down on everyone in the Plaza.
"It's raining Mortogs now?!?" Boochi asked.
"Boochi, it's not that bad," Oscar informed the baby Bruce. Just as he finished that sentence, a Mortog landed on his head. It then croaked.
Boochi let out a little chuckle. "Yeah, I could look like you."
The Mortogs had stopped raining by the time they got to the pizza shop. Oscar went to open the door, only to find that it was locked. The Ruki read the "Closed" sign and let out a sigh.
"It looks like nobody's inside," Oscar said with a sigh.
"Then why don't we just go around back and grab the trash anyway?" Boochi asked.
Oscar got a little uneasy at the thought. "I'm not sure if that's alright."
"You heard the Alien Aisha. Most of the time you don't even need to ask, and if anyone does, we could just say we're helping the owner out."
Boochi did make a good point. Who would ever complain about getting their trash thrown out? "I guess you're right," Oscar replied, still a little uneasy.
The pair walked to the other side of the building. The odor that was emanating from the area indicated that the dumpster was there. Best of all, there was nobody around.
Oscar and Boochi got as many bags as they could carry and began to walk back to the vending machine. Boochi noticed that there was a line forming from where the machine was. Nobody seemed to notice or care about the two Neopets pulling trash around.
The Alien Aisha from earlier ran up to them while holding one of the Mortogs that was scattered around the ground. He excitedly said, "Check it out! I have a new Petpet!"
Oscar looked at the Mortog, which then croaked at him. The Ruki then looked back up at the Aisha. "Will this be enough fuel to get us to Dr Landerbot?"
The Aisha smiled at the big bags they carried. "Oh, that is more than enough for a round trip! Wonderful!" He turned and began to walk away. "Now, follow me..."

...It took some time to weave through the crowds of Neopets gathered around the machine and the flood of Mortogs raining from the sky before they came upon the ship. It was a steely grey disc that resembled the spaceships Oscar had read about once.
They blinked and the Aisha let out a groan. The ship had become a large cube, and the only indication that it would move came from some flashing circles on the bottom, which were visible by the fact that the cube was levitating. On the side was some kind of feed slot. It looked large enough to cram in four average-sized Neopets.
"What in Fyora's name--"
"No, wait..." The Ruki eyed the cube, then smiled. "I think we can make this work!"
"It's different now, though!" the Bruce cried. "How in Neopia do you fly a... a block?!?"
"It looks pretty intuitive to me," the Ruki said, pointing to the glowing circles underneath. "Those... those are energy cores. When you fire them, they move the ship, right?" The Ruki and Bruce glanced toward the Aisha. He shrugged.
"Now, to figure out how to get insi--"
In a flash of green light, the pair found themselves inside the cube. Their trash bags were gone and they were worried for a moment before they saw the display with its fuel reading full. A can of Neocola was in the cupholder to Oscar's left. The Ruki smiled.
"It seems we are meant to find Dr Landlebrot."
The Aisha outside the cube frowned, but waved. "Safe travels."
It took all of three minutes and several bumpy false starts to figure out the controls, but once they did, they found that the cube-ship could move faster than any airship they had ever read about. Before long, they had found Dr Landlebrot's residence and materialized just outside of the cube.
His home was a blinding shade of cyan, with orange semicircles painted in various places. Boochi found the door, which was maroon and shaped like a pentagon, and tugged at the doorknob. It was unlocked and the door swung open with a loud, "Mooooooooo."
Suddenly the pair seemed nervous. When nothing else happened, they ventured inside the complex and found a green JubJub dozing in a chair that was just as quirky as the outside. As there was nobody else around and there seemed to be no other doors in the room, the Neopet could only be Dr Landlebrot. Oscar and Boochi exchanged glances before the Ruki crept forward, reaching out to poke the sleeping Neopet...

...when the JubJub's eyes suddenly snapped open.
"What the?!?" the JubJub said, gasping in surprise. "Who are you? What are you doing in here?"
Oscar and Boochi, who had both leaped back in surprise, eyed the JubJub cautiously. "We were looking for Dr Landlebrot. Is that you?"
"What? No! Of course not," the JubJub sputtered, startled. "I'm his lab assistant, Benji. What do you want with the doctor? He's quite busy, you know."
"We wanted to speak with him about his Random Events machine," Boochi said, speaking up. "I'd really like to give him a piece of my mind," the Bruce added, frowning sulkily.
"Um, what Boochi means is that we just want to talk with Dr Landlebrot about the possibility of toning down the Random Events," Oscar said politely, his antennae twitching nervously.
Benji began to reply, but stopped as they heard a loud BANG! coming from somewhere in the back of the house.
"Oh dear," Benji muttered. "I really should go see what happened. I only came out here to take a short break and I said I wouldn't be long. You two had better just come with me." The JubJub turned and hopped toward a doorway that now had thick purple smoke pouring from the seams around a large orange door.
Benji pushed the door open and the trio walked through to find a green Lutari holding a beaker in one paw, his disheveled white hair slightly singed at the tips.
"Oh good, Benny. You're back," the Lutari said while frowning at his beaker, slightly dazed. "It seems I had a little accident."
"It's Benji, Dr Landlebrot, remember?" Benji corrected, looking concerned. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, yes, of course," Dr Landlebrot waved off Benji's concern absentmindedly as he finally looked up at the JubJub. The doctor then suddenly seemed to register the presence of Oscar and Boochi, who were standing quietly in the doorway. "Who are you?" he demanded abruptly as he hastily tried to cover his workbench with a large white sheet. "You can't be in here! I'm working on a top-secret..."
| Author: a_ramsell Date: Dec 4th |
...Words left Oscar's tongue before he could stop them. "A top secret?" he asked, trading an intrigued look with Boochi.
The Ruki was startled to hear Benji echo his question and, shifting, he turned to stare at the JubJub. Clearly, the Neopet was as much in the dark about the doctor's project as Oscar himself. Peculiar.
"Uh," Dr Landlebrot replied, biting his lip. He adjusted the sheet, pulling it tauter over his workbench, but seemed to realise that its length wasn't sufficient to conceal everything and, instead, moved to block their view with his body. "Erm. I shouldn't have said that."
"Doctor," Benji interjected, "are you sure that you're well? You've seemed out of sorts since yesterday." His tone was worried and Oscar could see that a similar alarm was written across the assistant's features.
"I'm fine, Benny!" Dr Landlebrot snapped, blinking furiously. The Lutari's posture stiffened and he turned his upset gaze on Oscar and Boochi. "It's these two that you should be concerned about. Who are you? What are you doing here?" he demanded of them.
"We've come to talk to you about your Random Events machine," Oscar began, feeling hesitant. As Benji had said, the scientist didn't quite seem to be alright and Oscar wasn't sure how to proceed.
"Ha! A likely story! They're probably spies," the doctor scoffed, directing his words to his assistant. "That, or they've been sent to sabotage what I've been working on." Each word Dr Landlebrot said sounded more and more agitated and Oscar took a step back.
Beside Oscar, Boochi drew himself to his full height. "We most certainly aren't spies!" The baby Neopet turned out his pockets, dumping their contents on the floor. "We also haven't come to sabotage anything. I don't have anything suspicious on me!"
Oscar looked from the items on the ground to their owner. They included a Villainous Apple, a copy of Evil Plots For Beginners, and Boochi's purple, green, and red ray gun. "No," he agreed, shaking his head earnestly. "Of course not."
Dr Landlebrot opened his mouth but, before he could say anything, a tall shadow swept into the room. Instead, a small squeak escaped Oscar when he realised who the silhouette belonged to.
"Dr Sloth! How... random!" Benji exclaimed. He turned a panicked expression toward his employer but, to his and Oscar's surprise, the scientist's lips had stretched into a welcoming -- though absent -- smile.
The End
