Javrinn the Kougra's first thought was, "Oh great, what did I do this time?" You see, during his first
semester at the Training School, Javrinn had gotten a bit of a reputation as a troublemaker, who liked
to play pranks on his classmates.
But in the year since, Javrinn had put his troublemaking ways behind him and focused on his training.
Despite his dubious reputation, Javrinn had quickly become one of the school's most promising students.
However, every time some mischievous prank occurred, and no one was caught, Javrinn was always one
of the first students to be hauled in as a suspect. So when he got to the Techo Master's office, he
was surprised to be greeted so warmly.
"Ah, Javrinn," the Techo Master said, putting his arm around the young Kougra. "It's so good to see you..."

"...Err, is there a problem sir?" Javrinn asked in a politely puzzled voice.
"Problem?" the Techo Master replied. "Oh no, this is something of great importance! Our Training School
is competing against the Krawk Island Academy, and I hoped you'd be our representative! So, what do you
Javrinn looked at him in astonishment. "M-me? Represent our school? I-I don't know what to say!"
"Say, 'yes!'" suggested the Techo Master.
Javrinn was just about to reply when a booming knock at the the door made him almost jump out of

"...Excuse me," the Techo Master said as he stood to answer the door. When he opened the door, there
was a young Zafara standing there dressed in camoflague. Walking into the office, the Zafara nodded
towards Javrinn, and sat down in front of the Techo Master's desk.
"I have some interesting news to report, master." The Zafara said.
"Tell me!" the Techo Master answered eagerly.
"Well," he said, "I went to the Krawk Island Academy as instructed, and the place is totally empty.
Although, when I went to investigate further, I nearly got my fur singed by flying fire arrows! The
place is riddled with booby traps."
"Hmm... I can see they're not taking any chances," replied the Techo Master.
"Hey, wait a minute!" Javrinn said. "Who is this guy, and why is he sneaking around the other academy?"
"I'm a spy, you dummy!" the Zafara responded.
Just then, an arrow that was on fire shot through the glass window, and stuck in the wall....

...The Techo Master walked over to the place where the flaming arrow had hit the wall and put out
"Now... what was I saying, Javrinn?" The Techo Master asked. The flaming distraction had derailed his
train of thought.
"A fireproof casing!" Javrinn exclaimed.
"No, that's not what I was talking about..." The Techo Master mumbled, rubbing his chin.
"No!" Javrinn pointed to the floor below where the arrow had struck, "It must have been
attached to that arrow." They all paused and looked at the small case on the floor.
"Let me handle this!" The Zafara stated heroically, picking up the casing. "You guys stand back...
it could be dangerous!"
"Oh, brother..." Javrinn muttered. The Zafara was really hamming it up for the Techo Master. He dusted
the small case off and reached for the red top. Dripping sweat poured from his brow. He winced and
turned away, carefully unscrewing the top...

...Then, the Zafara stared inside the box. "Hey, nothing to worry about," he said as he pulled up the
item for all to see. "It's just a Blue Clockwork Grundo!"
Javrinn and the Techo Master exchanged glances, then both said, "Is it wound?"
The Zafara smiled and nodded, "Yup! Wait... UH-OH!"
As Javrinn and the Techo Master ran for cover, the bomb blew up and covered the Zafara with... bits of pie.
"Pie?" Javrinn asked. "Is this a joke?"
"Wait there's a letter," the Techo Master said. He picked up the plastic-covered note hidden under a
piece of crust. "It says, 'May the best school win. If we catch you skulking around our academy again,
you're going to get something worse than pie!' Signed, 'Cap'n Threelegs of the Krawk Island Academy.'"
"Whose idea was it to hire a spy?" Javrinn demanded. "And why start a competition all of sudden?"
"Hey this pie is good," the Techo Master declared after licking one of his fingers. "Strawberry Cream,
I would say."
"Master!" Javrinn said impatiently.
The Zafara, now covered with Strawberry Cream pie from head to foot, said slowly, "You see, the school

..." he paused.
"Wait a minute... who makes the best pies in Neopia?" Javrinn asked, screwing up his face in thought.
"Neopian Fresh Foods, right? Well, what is Captain Threelegs doing in that area? He wouldn't travel
that far for some pies!"
The Zafara and Techo Master nodded.
"Sir," the Zafara said, turning to the Techo Master. "This is an invesitgation a trained spy should
"Hold it! I want to go, too." Javrinn interrupted. He had lost his professional tone.
"I think it's best that you stay here, Javrinn. You have to stay in training; you're our representitive,
and we can't afford you getting hurt."
Javrinn wasn't willing to listen. He was going to go, whether the Techo Master liked it or not...

...That night, once the Techo Master and Zafara had left for Neopia Central, Javrinn gathered all the
items he would need and shoved them into a backpack. He then started walking towards the dock where
tours were held. After a bit of chatting and some flashes of Neopoints, Javrinn boarded a canoe and
set off towards Neopia Central...
"19th day of Celebrating, 8:00 NST" Javrinn said to himself as he watched the Food Shop Chia lock the
doors. "The Food Shop is closed." Across from him, and unaware of his presence, were the Zafara and
Techo Master, behind a nearby tree. "I'm making my move," he said. Careful not to make any sounds, he
emerged from the bush in which he'd been hiding and slid behind the giant burger.
Through the back window, Javrinn saw three figures talking at a table. Moving closer to the
window, he could clearly make out an Eyrie, Techo, and Wocky. The Eyrie had a peg leg ("Cap'n
Threelegs!" Javrinn thought.), the Techo had a bandana and eyepatch, while the Wocky was equipped
with a hook instead of a hand.
Slowly, Javrinn opened the back door a tiny bit, so he could hear what they were saying...

...The pirates were huddled close around the wooden table, their heads almost touching, and their
voices low and hushed. Javrinn lowered himself just below the window so he wouldn't be seen.
"Is everything going according to plan?"
Javrinn tried to recognize the voice, and decided it was the Eyrie. "What's Threelegs planning?" He
"Aye, Cap'n. Everything's ready." The Techo growled. There was a deep scar was under his eyepatch.
Javrinn shuddered and kept low.
"Boys," Cap'n Threelegs said, "tonight is the night we reclaim our glory! The Techo Master has robbed
us of the only thing we've ever had... our reputation! Revenge is in the air, and we will leave nothing
Threelegs looked into the eyes of his two comrades. The Techo and Wocky smirked at each other and a sly
grin passed over their lips...

...Suddenly, the Zafara came up behind Javrinn and said, "What are you doing here?!?"
"Shhh!" Javrinn said, as the pirates stood to see who was spying on them. "Where's the Techo Master?"
he asked, ducking even lower.
"He's been captured by some pirates that were hiding in the bushes," the Zafara answered.
"Argh!" Javrinn said, forgetting that the pirates were headed in their direction.
"Ah HA!" Cap'n Threelegs exclaimed as he grabbed the two of them by their arms.
"W-we didn't h-hear anything, honest!" Javrinn said nervously.
"Decided to spy, huh?" Cap'n Threelegs asked angrily.
"N-no, w-we were just um... taking a walk." Javrinn replied. "Yep, just going for a walk..."
Date: 20 Dec.
"Arr! Ya don't fool me!" Cap'n Threelegs exclaimed, dragging them towards the table.
"I warned ye about what would happen if I caught ye spyin' again."
"What'll we do with 'em Cap'n?" the Techo and Wocky asked.
Javrinn shuddered to think what would happen to them now.
"Let's tie 'em up for now," Cap'n Threelegs decided. "I'm not worried about 'em now, so we'll deal with
"Aye, Cap'n!" they replied. The pirates grabbed two wooden chairs, forced Javrinn and
Zafara to sit down, and tied them up with some strong rope. "There!" exclaimed the pirates, "Let's see
you escape from us now!" The pirates returned for a sit at Cap'n Threelegs table, continuing their
conversation over a game of Poker.
"What are we going to do now?!?" a panicked Javrinn asked Zafara. "I'm worried about Techo Master, too!"
"Don't panic!" the Zafara whispered back to Javrinn, nearly in tears.
"We're going to DIE!" Javrinn said miserably.
"Don't be silly, Javrinn... calm down!" the Zafara replied. "Did you not think that a PROFFESIONAL spy
wouldn't have some secret spy gadgets?"
Despite the fact that its arms were tied back, the Zafara managed to reach into one of its pockets
and pull out a...

"Oh no!" said the Zafara in a worried tone.
Then, Captain Threelegs came up to them. "Now, lets see... what are we going to do with yer?"
"Time to unvail our little surprise. Go and get the you-know-what," the Techo said to the Wocky,
"and turn off the lights, too!"
The Wocky did as he was told. Hours seemed to pass until...
"Surprise!!!" Javrinn saw that all his peers were standing behind a huge cake!
"Happy Birthday, Javrinn. I knew that this was a good idea! With your curiosity, it was easy to
make you forget your birthday was coming up," the Techo Master said while he was taking off his
"You mean?" Javrinn said.
"That's right. This isn't going to be a competion with Captain Threelegs' school, after all!" said
the Zafara. "Sorry if you're disappointed... lets eat!"
And they had fun celebrating till it was practically dawn.
