Story Two Hundred and Thirty-Five Ends July 22nd
"I told you not to touch it!" Jenta hissed.
"Well, how was I supposed to know this would happen?" Kalli growled.
Jenta glared at her friend. "Oh, I don't know, maybe the swirling black and red light coming from it may have been a hint that it was a cursed object?"
Kalli's lower lip quivered. "Like I could have guessed that it would turn us into... into..."
"USUKI DOLLS!" the friends cried together.
They both sighed and surveyed their surroundings. The two friends were sitting rather stiffly on a high shelf in Neopia Central's Usuki Shop, which was closed until morning.
"Hey guys!"
"AHHHHH!" Jenta and Kalli screamed, as another Usuki Doll turned and spoke to them.
"My goodness, you scared us!" Jenta exclaimed. She breathed a sigh of relief, thankful for the fact that they weren't alone.
"Sorry. My name is Sellia," the "Usuki" said. "Did you anger the Swamp Witch too?"
"Actually, what happened was..."

..."We were on our way to the Usuki Shop to pick up the cool new Maraquan Warrior Usuki Doll so we could celebrate their great victory."
Sellia nodded politely, waiting for Jenta to continue her story.
"And then," she began, pausing slightly for dramatic effect, "then, Kalli here decided to go down an alley a few stores back 'cause she 'saw something pretty.'"
Kalli wrinkled up her tiny Usuki nose and stuck her tongue out at Jenta. "It was pretty," she mumbled, almost to herself.
"Anyway, we continued on down the alley towards a strange glowing orb..."
"It looked like a crystal ball!" Kalli added helpfully.
"When we got up close, Kalli decided it would be a good idea to touch the strangely glowing and obviously cursed object and tadda, here we are in the Usuki Shop just like we had planned. The only problem is... we're for sale."
Sellia thought for a long while, and the three Usuki-sized friends sat in complete silence.
At long last, a glisten of hope shone in Sellia's eyes.
"Perhaps," she mused thoughtfully, "perhaps if we can find a way back to that alley, we can figure out exactly what happened to you guys and maybe even reverse the effects..."

..."That's a very solid idea, well-thought out, all in all good plan, but how in Geraptiku's name are we going to accomplish that?" Jenta exclaimed. "We probably won't make it off of this shelf alive!" The three of them peered over the edge. It was too dark to make out anything. Kalli leaned forward and squinted to get a closer look.
Suddenly... "EAHHHHHHHHH!!!" Jenta and Sellia gasped at the empty spot where their companion had been only milliseconds before.
"Kalli!" they screamed in unison.
There was only dead silence. Then...
"AHHHH! STAY AWAY! TAKE THAT! AND THAT!"
"Kalli?" Jenta's voice sounded puzzled.
Below, a terrified doll was pummeling at a rather cute green Aisha plushie as hard as she could with her short stubby arms.
"Oi, Kalli, what's going on?" they yelled.
Kalli stopped her relentless onslaught of tiny karate moves to shout back, "I'm okay! It's a soft landing, but brace yourself for attacking Aishas!"
Sellia smacked a plastic paw to her plastic head in exasperation. "She must have landed in the plushie cart! I forgot all about it. Come on."
And without further ado, they leaped off the edge and landed with soft "Oomphs!" on a pair of red and purple Aisha plushies. Jenta pulled the poor plush toy out of the stream of punches and gently reassured Kalli they were only plushies, and had no intent of taking over Neopia.
"Come on! There's the entrance," Sellia said, and the trio started clambering down the bars of the cart. They scurried down the aisle and around the bend.
"Oh no..." wailed Jenta. "The doors are locked!"
They stared up at the menacing silver padlock. It seemed to mock them as it gleamed in the moonlight.
"Not to worry," Sellia said, and she prodded them in another direction, a mischievous look on her plastic face...

...The three companions made their way around the desk at the front of the store. Kalli was still shaking from her encounter with what she called the "Evil Aishas of DOOM," but all in all they were no worse for wear.
When they rounded the corner of the desk, Sellia smiled from ear to ear (a very short distance indeed) and made her way over to a small Petpet door at the base of the wall.
"Shopkeep owns a few Petpets, and in my few hours here, I have seen them go in and out this way," Sellia explained to the other two Usukis.
It was then that Sellia and Jenta noticed that Kalli had stopped following them. Turning around they regarded the somber-looking Usuki with questioning stares.
"My price tag says 100 NP!" Kalli exclaimed in disgust. "I am worth way more than that!"
Jenta's mouth dropped open as she regarded her friend in complete and utter disbelief. "Who cares! We are getting out of here, we don't actually want to be purchased!" she shouted back in an exasperated tone.
Kalli reluctantly conceded her friend's point and joined her fellow Usukis as they approached the Petpet door.
Just as they were about to push through the door, it swung in on them, knocking them backwards into prone positions on the floor.
"Help!!" screamed Kalli, as she was lifted high into the air by the intruding Petpet, a massive and shaggy Puppyblew...

...Jenta and Sellia stared at each other for a moment before screaming and then running after the Puppyblew, who had caught their friend in his mouth. They ran as fast as their little feet could manage, which was, in fact, very slow.
They stopped for a moment to take a breath when they saw the Puppyblew coming straight towards them, Kalli still in his mouth.
"AAAAHHHHH! RUN!" Jenta yelled at Sellia, before turning around completely and running away from the enormous Petpet.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" Kalli screamed. "SAVE ME, DON'T RUN AWAY!"
While running away, Sellia grabbed Jenta's arm and yanked her under a lower shelf, hiding in a bunch of reject Usukis. They could both see the Puppyblew running away down another aisle.
"We need to figure out a way to save Kalli," Sellia said.
"Well, the Pupplyblew can't run around forever, and it has to spit Kalli out of its mouth eventually," said Jenta.
"That's true. Unless it eats her. Sorry," Sellia added at the look on Jenta's face. She paused for a moment. "Listen. What do you hear?"
"Nothing."
"Exactly! The Puppyblew must have stopped running. Come on, let's find him."
The two Usukis quietly came out of hiding, and began to sneak around like secret spies, looking for the Petpet and their friend.
As they peered around an aisle at the front desk, Sellia exclaimed in a hushed tone, "Look! Over there! He's sleeping, and he's sleeping on some sort of toy or something."
"That's no toy!" Jenta cried. "It's Kalli! Come on, we've got to go save her."
Even quieter than they were before, Jenta and Sellia tip-toed to their friend, who was being crushed by the sleeping Petpet's face.
"HELP ME!" Kalli whispered desperately.
The two other Usukis nodded their heads and crept up to their friend, discussing a plan. Jenta and Sellia would each grab one of Kalli's arms and yank her out quickly. Even if the Puppyblew did not wake up, they would make the mad dash to the Petpet door.
With one quick motion, Kalli was free from the Petpet, who surprisingly did not wake up. They hurried towards the Petpet door, only to be interrupted by a new visitor (of DOOM). A gargantuan, ferocious, meeping Meepit...

..."Meepit attacks!" Kalli screamed, taking a step backwards along with her friends.
The new Petpet growled menacingly, advancing towards the poor Usuki dolls as they ran back as fast as they could, which was much slower than the Meepit. Every clamping step that the Meepit took shook the floor, and the tiny pets-turned-dolls flew into the air each time the Petpet made contact with the floor.
"I've heard of conspiracy theories about Meepits taking over the world, but this is it!" Jenta said in exasperation. "Now it's really taking over Neopia -- starting with us!"
"Just run!" Sellia said helpfully.
"We're running!" Kalli screamed, as the three of them scurried across the floor, towards the direction that they had just come from. All three of them had their heads turned around in fear, keeping a close eye on the pink furry creature chasing behind them.
Jenta turned around first to see where exactly they were going in their headlong rush. "Where..." Her face displayed plain dismay. "AAH! There's that... that... PUPPYBLEW!"
"We forgot about that, didn't we?" Sellia said, as the three friends smacked right into their sleeping beauty, which wasn't sleeping anymore.
The Petpet snapped awake and leapt to all fours, staring first at the strange toys, then at their pursuer.
Caught between a growling Puppyblew and a squeaking Meepit, the three of them realized that they were cornered. On either side there was a humungous Petpet trying to grab them, and there was no escape.
"If there are nice faeries in Neopia, I'll actually believe them when they rescue me..." Sellia muttered, watching the two Petpets tense themselves up for battle. The three Usukis closed their eyes...
The Petpets rushed at each other, barking and growling...
The three friends blinked and opened their eyes to find that the two giant Petpets had collided in a rough heap of fur, still clawing and squealing.
"Good for us," Sellia said determinedly, with a satisfied smile on her face. "Come," she whispered, beckoning to her stunned friends. "This is our chance to escape!"...

...The crew hastily ran to the Petpet door and silently begged Fyora that there would not be another experience like the last two times they were there. When the coast seemed clear, the three usukis scurried out of the Petpet door to finish their journey towards the alley that would hopefully answer a few questions.
To avoid suspicion, the group had to stay off the roads; after all, who wouldn't be a little confused to see three tiny usuki toys strutting through the streets of Neopia?
"Wow, everything is so much BIGGER when you're so much SMALLER!" exclaimed the awestruck Kalli, breaking the silence of the group. The others, still getting over the trauma of their Petpet experience, just rolled their eyes.
The trio wandered for what seemed like miles, but with their teeny legs, it could've easily been only a few meters. After thirty minutes of the tedious venturing, Sellia started to wonder.
"So Jenta, where exactly is this mysterious ally you're leading us to, anyway?" asked Sellia in a shaky, doubtful voice.
"Oh, it's just, um, well maybe if we go right up-- no. Uh, I bet if we stay in this direction for a little while we'll... I'm LOST!!!" cried Jenta in despair. "Lost I tell you, LOST!"
"Great!" Kalli and Sellia muttered sarcastically.
Jenta glared at Kalli. "Well, you're not helping much."
"I'm not the one who's supposed to remember directions!" Kalli sniffed, tossing her thick, fake hair.
"No, you're just the one who's supposed to touch unidentified evil objects!" Jenta said darkly.
"What are we going to do?" Sellia interrupted impatiently.
"It'll take a miracle to get us back to the alley now, and look, it's pitch dark outside!" whined Kalli. "I'm calling for help. HELP!!! HELP!"
"Kalli! We can't risk having someone hear our call. Be quiet!" demanded Jenta in distress.
But it was too late. Someone had already overheard Kalli...

...Loud, running footsteps shook the ground, and the three Usukis stood still, paralyzed with fear.
"This is all your fault!" hissed Jenta to Kalli, anger overwhelming her fear.
Kalli couldn't answer. Guilt and fear mixed with anger kept her from making a sound.
BOOM... BOOM... BOOM!
Then there was silence.
Sellia was the first to speak. "What was that?" she whispered.
Jenta and Kalli never had a chance to reply.
"Oh, look! Free Usuki dolls!"
A gargantuan cloud Ixi loomed above them, grinning.
"AAAHHHHHH!!!!!" The three Usukis made a mad dash into the darkness, hardly even caring where they would end up at.
"Wow, talking ones! Cool! Hey! Come back!" the Ixi cried, making huge, rumbling footsteps.
The three attempted to hide behind a rock, but the Ixi, with a definite height advantage, still spied them. Before they knew it, they were scooped up by large hooves and dropped into a small purse.
For a moment, they all stared at each other in shocked silence.
Then, as one, they scrambled to the top of the purse, attempting to peer out. Jenta was furious. "Oh, great. Now we're even more lost than before! Kalli--"
She was interrupted by a faint glow somewhere in the distance...

..."Jenta?" Sellia peered at her, concerned. "What's wrong?"
Jenta's jaw had dropped, and her eyes had widened with surprise. "Nothing's wrong," she replied, a smile creeping across her face. "In fact... I think something finally went RIGHT."
The other two Usukis exchanged bewildered looks. "What--"
"Look!" Jenta exclaimed impatiently, jabbing one tiny paw at a single point of light piercing the inky blackness. "That's the orb! We weren't that far off after all!"
"We have to hurry," Sellia said urgently. Indeed, each step the Ixi took carried them farther and farther away from the orb. "But how are we going to get down without HER noticing?"
"Well, if she didn't notice Jenta's shouting, it shouldn't be too much of a problem," a surly Kalli grumbled. "But it's a pretty long drop," she added faintly.
Jenta, meanwhile, had disappeared into the bottom of the purse. When she reappeared, she was lugging a blue lipstick. She leaned over the edge and purposely chucked it as hard as she could at the ground. To Jenta's annoyance their captor continued on, oblivious.
"Kalli... Sellia... see if you can find some Neopoints down there--" she jerked her head to indicate the purse "--to toss." The Usukis did as they were told, and finally the Ixi responded to the chink of coins hitting the pavement. She turned, made a small "Oh!" of dismay when she saw the trail of glinting Neopoints, and hastily bent down to pick them up. The Usukis took this as their cue and slid out of the purse; the Ixi was far too absorbed with recovering her belongings to see them scurrying away into the shadows.
They had to backtrack a long way, but at least now they knew where they were going. By the time they reached the alley, Kalli was swaying where she stood from weariness, Jenta's temper had become, if possible, even worse, and Sellia was showing an annoying tendency to giggle at everything. But they quickly sobered up at the sight of the orb...

..."There it is," whispered Sellia, the traces of an airy grin still on her face.
Kalli leaned on the wall for support, gazing at the brilliant point of black and red hovering before them from beneath sleep-heavy eyes. Beside her, Jenta scowled ill-naturedly. "I don't see a reverse button," she snapped.
Ignoring Jenta's biting tones, Sellia skipped forward, laughing. "Well, there's just one way to find out how it works!" Still grinning, she reached a paw up toward the orb.
Kalli's eyes snapped open in alarm. "Sellia, no! Don't touch it!"
But it was too late. Their friend's paw connected solidly with the cursed orb, and she disappeared in a violent blur of black and red.
Concern for her new friend ebbed the scowl from Jenta's countenance. "Sellia...?"
Kalli and Jenta stared at the whirling points of light, horrorstruck, and saw it grow, exploding outward in a roar of thunder.
The lights cleared, and in the motes of smoke and slow-settling dust, the friends let their breath out in a sigh of relief: Sellia stood before them, full-grown and restored.
"It worked!" she exclaimed in a voice that shook the pavement. "I'm back!"
Smiling, Kalli offered her paw to Jenta. "With you?"
"Yes," replied her friend, and took it. As one they approached the glowing orb, and touched its glassy surface.
They felt the plastic melt away like shells, peeling down to reveal fur and skin and hair. Jenta and Kalli, Usuls once more, beamed at their cured friend.
Sellia opened her mouth to speak, but they heard a scuffling noise behind them. All three looked to see who it was, and saw the cloud Ixi approaching.
"This is going to sound silly," said the Ixi, "but did any of you see any talking Usuki dolls pass through here?"
Jenta bit back a grin. "Here? Not a chance."
The Ixi looked confused. "What was going on over here? I saw lights and smoke... and heard sounds..."
Kalli pointed toward the orb as the three friends turned away. "It was that thing," she explained, trying not to laugh at the gleam of greed in the Ixi's eyes. "I wouldn't touch it, though, if I were you."
