Story Two Hundred and Twenty-Five Ends May 6th
"Go... on!" the Zafara said, urging her Faellie. "It's just a Symol hole, it won't hurt you! Just run in there and take a look around!" she ordered, picking up the reluctant creature. The Faellie began to flutter its wings wildly, desperately trying to scramble away. "Narni, calm down!" the exasperated Zafara shouted, trying to maintain her grip on the Petpet. The normally calm creature was being oddly resistant, but Kari hadn't come all the way to Meridell just to leave a few areas unexplored.
"Just... take... a look!" she said, thrusting Narni towards the hole. The Faellie, however, wrenched its small body to the left and, furiously beating its wings, caused the surprised Zafara to lose her grip, falling headfirst into the Symol hole...

...Gasping in surprise, she fell down, down, down... until BUMP! She hit the bottom of the hole. Dust rose around Kari in a billowing cloud. Coughing and spluttering, the Zafara tried to decide which felt worse -- having dirt shoved into her mouth or have it stinging her eyes.
"Definitely the mouth..." groaned Kari as she pushed herself up to her feet and glanced around. She couldn't see a thing -- nothing but a blanket of darkness. The air smelled moist and cool, but the details of the place were unknown. The walls felt mostly smooth to the touch. She glanced up, and could just see a small speck of light that had to be the entrance of the Symol Hole -- too high up for her to climb and escape.
"N-Narni?" Kari stammered. A flurry of wings and an anxious squeak told the Zafara that her Faellie had followed her owner out of concern. Kari felt some of her fears allayed when she felt the familiar presence, but she still couldn't shake her unsettled sensation. She had a peculiar feeling in her stomach -- like someone was watching her.
Or perhaps many someones.
The Zafara suddenly gasped, all other thoughts fluttering out of her head, away like a frightened Pteri, as she saw them. They blinked at her from all directions, large and circular, staring at her.
Eyes. Many, many eyes...

...Eyes that scrutinized her curiously with their large, blank stares, appearing both menacing and hypnotizing at the same time.
Kari felt Narni's petite body suddenly cling timidly to her shoulder, unleashing a soft whimper that trembled like a leaf blowing in the crisp wind. It only intensified her anxiety, motivating her to muster the courage to withdraw a few steps backwards, wanting to put as much distance between herself and those haunting eyes as possible. She slowly began to back into a small tunnel...
She jolted from sheer panic when another multitude of eyes emerged behind her, causing her to hit her head against the low dirt ceiling. She was trapped, panic consuming her sanity at the realization that she was completely surrounded.
"Meep!"
"Meep!"
"Meep! Meep! Meep! Meep!"
A chorus of meeps began echoing in unison, their furtive voices mocking the unwelcomed intruder.
As she scrambled away, Kari caught a brief glimpse of a few diverse Petpets bound prisoner, their dreary eyes following her pleadingly. She lost her balance in her efforts to flee, stumbling abruptly to the ground beneath the shaft of light illuminating the shrouding darkness.
She gasped as her eyes used the light to gradually get accustomed to the darkness, her attention just catching the intricate patterns that decorated the walls -- perhaps war plans outlining a vast invasion upon the Neopian world?
And there, finally appearing into view, was terror in its full two and a half pounds...

...A white Meepit's blank, vacant eyes stared at Kari as it shuffled closer, pressing the Zafara back until she nearly fell into yet another endless group of Meepits, their horrible eyes staring right through. Narni shivered on her shoulder, emitting a tiny whimper every now and then, looking nearly ready to sink to the floor in a dead faint. Kari heartily wished she could do the same.
At last she had no more room to back away, and the white Meepit that seemed to be the leader stopped directly in front of her. Dozens upon dozens of its fellow Meepits closed in around her, chittering eerily in their mocking voices.
"Um," Kari said shakily. "Hi?"
"Meeeeeeep," the lead Meepit replied thoughtfully, drawing out the sound as its unblinking eyes shifted from Kari's face to the Faellie on her shoulder. Narni uttered another timid whimper, shrinking so much into the Zafara's shoulder it seemed as though she were trying to disappear.
The white Meepit pointed to Narni and turned toward its fellows, chattering loudly. The Meepits glanced around at each other as the white Meepit spoke, muttering quietly to one another.
When the white Meepit finished, their eyes slowly rose in unison to the Faellie on Kari's shoulder. The hair on the back of Kari's neck stood on end.
"MEEP."
The sound was a demand, uttered from every Meepit's mouth at once. Tiny paws extended toward Kari. The Zafara swallowed hard as she realized what they were trying to communicate.
The Meepits wanted Narni...

...In an instant Kari had made her decision; she was not going to give up her Faellie without a fight. Hugging the trembling creature to her chest, she backed away, struggling to move efficiently in the uncomfortable stooped position the low ceilings demanded.
Behind her, the Meepits followed.
Kari dared not turn around; glancing behind would lose valuable time. The path was dark, lit only by sporadic beams of light filtering down through root-tangled holes like milky eyes. Pattering behind her was the drumming rhythm of pursuing feet.
Fighting the rising panic in her stomach, Kari surged on through the twists and turns of the tunnel. She knew in moments that she was hopelessly lost; keeping ahead of the Meepits demanded her full attention and she had spared no part of her mind keeping track of her location.
Sticky beads of sweat absorbed in her fur and her lungs felt dry as she breathed. Her madly beating heart warned her that soon she must stop -- that her energy waned -- but her mind would not allow it as long as there was a way out.
Then she came to a dead end.
Kari stared at it for a wild moment; there must be a way through! With her free paw she pushed in vain against the tightly-packed wall of soil, but she was trapped. Trembling at the sickening rush of panic assailing her limbs, the Zafara turned to face the scurrying feet that approached.
The white Meepit was the first to turn the corner. His expressionless eyes fixed on Narni, and his hands reached out expectantly. "Meep!" he demanded in a short bark.
The others took up the call. "Meep! Meep!"
Kari shook her head, surpressing tears of rage and fear, and backed against the wall of earth. She clutched the Faellie to her with all of her remaining strength.
Like a slow, inevitable tide they approached, intent upon her Petpet...

...Suddenly, where before there had been only hard-packed earth at her back, there was a strange flurrying sensation. Paws grabbed her arms, legs, ears, and tail from behind, and Kari was yanked backward through a veil of suddenly loose dirt. She yelped and got her mouth and eyes full of little grains.
There was an enraged "MEEP!" and she could hear the patter of angry little feet as the Meepits surged forward.
The hands cast her onto the floor, and Kari curled protectively on hands and knees over her Faellie, choking and coughing and spitting out dirt. The pattering continued, but no Meepits seized her.
When she could look up again, she stared. Through the remaining tears, Kari saw that there were Symols of every color patting and kicking dirt back into place on the wall she'd come through. The light came from a half-dozen glowing Zebies curled up around the edges of a tiny chamber.
Narni wriggled free and went to a Zebie, and they chrrped at each other in a nervous but friendly way. Then Narni approached her owner again and grabbed hold of Kari's ear, tugging it lightly...

...and pointing to the Zebie. As she pointed, a loud BOOM shook the small chamber as the Meepits attempted to break through the dirt wall. Muffled cries of "MEEEEEEP" could be heard as they echoed in the tiny space.
Kari turned her attention back to Narni, her mind racing. The Faellie was trying to communicate to her owner through paw gestures and pointing at the wall.
Kari tried as hard as she could to decipher what Narni was trying to tell her. Right then, there was another ground shaking boom as a wave of Meepits hit the wall.
"Narni, what are you trying to say?" Kari asked in an exasperated voice. Narni pointed again, first at the Zebie, and then at the wall. Suddenly, Kari's mind flashed back to the array of various Petpets that had been captured. She could just see the pleading look on their faces, and the fear in their eyes. Kari understood what she had to do.
"Oh Narni, how are we ever going to rescue those Petpets and get out of this safely?" Kari asked. All she had was a Faellie, a few glowing Zebies, and a pack of Symols. How was she ever going to escape from the tunnel? And now, she couldn't just leave the Petpets to their doom in the tunnel.
In her mind, a plan was forming. The Symols could dig quicker than anything else she could think of. The Zebies provided enough light to help them. Narni could hopefully keep out of reach of the Meepits by flying. And Kari, she was much bigger then the Meepits. Surely, she could take them on.
Another loud crash of Meepits shook the room, along with a few angry cries of "MEEP!", as the packed earth nearly gave way. Kari wasn't so sure of herself now.
Turning to the Symbols and Zebies, Kari took a deep breath. "Ok guys, this is what we gotta do..."

..."We have to--" Kari was cut off by another, louder, earth-shaking BOOM and a fierce cry of "Meep!" A fine sprinkling of dust showered down on them, getting dirt in their eyes.
"We have to hurry; there isn't much time left. Now, the Symols can dig a tunnel away from here, towards those imprisoned Petpets, then up toward the surface. The Zebies--"
BOOM. Another fine coating of dust.
"The Zebies can light the way; I'll do my best to cover our backs. Narni--"
BOOM.
"Narni, I want you to stay out of the way of the Meepits. Fly over them and release the other Petpets when you can. Hopefully you could also help anyone who falls behind. Is that clear?"
BOOM.
"Meep!" The Meepits could sense the certain victory.
Everybody nodded. Symols began to dig an escape tunnel, working furiously and skillfully. Zebies crowded near the Symols, protecting their faces from the dirt that was spraying everywhere. Narni took to the air, ready to be of use when needed. Kari faced the wall.
BOOM.
The Symols had made enough progress for them to follow, the chance of freedom lending speed to them.
"Meep!" With one last BOOM they were through.
Kari looked back; everybody was in the tunnel. She backed up to it and began swatting at the Meepits trying to get into the tunnel. They meeped furiously as they realized Kari's plan.
The Zafara made a slow retreat, still swatting left and right at furious Meepits, while her Petpet friends...

...made a furious dash to the other trapped Petpets. Once the Symols had breached the wall, Narni swooped in, freeing the other imprisoned Petpets as quickly as she could. While she worked, the determined Symols began the arduous task of digging towards the surface.
The Zebies spread out to provide as much light as possible, but behind them the furious struggle between the Zafara and the pursuing Meepit horde was intensifying. Time was running out!
"Meep!" came the cry as the Meepit army finally surrounded and toppled Kari. The little creatures began pulling and prodding at the now overwhelmed Zafara, who cried out to no avail. The weight of the Meepits piling on top of her was literally crushing the breath from her lungs. She squirmed and fought and hoped that by some miracle, her Petpet friends could escape their pursuers.
Then suddenly...
"Meeeeeeeep!" The dreadful cry ripped through the air as Narni slammed her delicate body into one of the Meepits, launching it away from Kari. However protectively over her owner, the Faellie began knocking off the attackers one by one. This only intensified the Meepits' frenzy as they turned their full attention towards the vulnerable Faellie...

...Kari still had an idea, though. As the Meepits lifted their little bodies off of her to ram Narni one by one, the Zafara quietly picked herself up.
Trying not to attract attention, she winced as her delicate little Petpet got slammed to the ground by one of the Meepits. Next to her fear, a feeling of anger was building in Kari.
"YARR!" she yelled, charging the Meepits. Taken off guard, the attackers actually took a step back in fear of getting trampled.
This gave the Symols and Zebies a few precious extra seconds to dig, and by this time, a small crescent of the light could be seen above the earth.
"Come on, guys!" Kari encouraged, all the while slapping furiously at the oncoming stream of Meepits.
A few more seconds went by, and then... THUD. Kari hardly dared to look back, but when she did, she smiled and gave in to the flow of Meepits. They trampled over her in their rush to get to the escaping Petpets, but it was too late.
"MEEP! MEEP!" they all screamed in anger as the Symols, Zebies, and other trapped Petpets arose to the light. The Symols had finally dug to the surface.
"Come on, Narni!" Kari yelled. She gently grabbed her Petpet up into her arms and scrambled above ground into the glorious sunshine. Once they were all a safe distance away, Kari watched with delight as all of the Petpets beamed at her and then scrambled away to their homes. The Symols all saluted her, then promptly went back underground. Somehow, Kari knew that the Meepits would never venture into the bright sunlight and come above ground to follow her this far, so she promptly fell down to the ground with a laugh, panting.

"Come on, Narni, I think we deserve a good dinner after all we've been through today," Kari said, petting her Faellie fondly. Narni purred.
Kari grabbed a sackful of Neopoints and headed out the door, ready to go to the grocery store and buy the best dinner ever.
About halfway there, Kari met up with one of her friends. "Hi!" the Lupe greeted. "What have you been up to today? Haven't seen you around..."
"Symol hole," Kari said casually.
Her friend's eyes brightened. "Ah!" he cried. "What happened to Narni? Did she get anything?"
Kari turned to her Petpet with a twinkle in her eye, winked, and then looked back at the Lupe. "Her... her strength increased. And her bravery."
