Story One-Hundred and Thirty-Seven Ends July 25th

"Why did I ever agree to this?" sighed Tihandra, climbing up onto the cold, steel platform.

"Uh, because you can't afford a paint brush, and you want to be 'Oh so pretty, and popular'?" grinned her younger Moehog brother.

The Zafara glared at her brother, before turning a wary eye back onto the ominous steel shaft of the Lab Ray. She stared at the huge machine, wires and metal tubes protruding from all around, and strange disks, diminishing in size as they made their way along the ray, coming to a point right between her eyes. She shuddered, but gathered herself before shouting to her brother, "Hedge, throw the switch!"

The machine began to make a loud humming sound, along with that of crackling electricity. The last thing Tihandra saw before clamping her eyes shut was a bright light coming from the depths of the inner cylinder.

"Tihandra! Tihandra, open you eyes!" she heard her brother shout.

The Zafara slowly opened her eyes. The cylinder of the Lab Ray was dark once again, though she felt a bit of heat from the metal. "What's wrong? Did it not work?"

"Not work? What are you taking about? Look at you!" her brother said, excitedly pointing towards her.

Tihandra looked down and gasped. "Look! Look at me! I'm starry! I'm STARRY!"

Hedge couldn't help but prance around with his sister from the excitement. Jumping up and down, running in circles, and just making a noisy, but happy racket.

"Oh Hedge, I can't believe it! Just wait until we go back to school tomorrow! I can't believ--OUCH!" Tihandra glared and the piece of metal she had just slammed her elbow down upon, and rubbed her arm gingerly. "Anyways, let's hurry and catch the boat off this island!"

"Yeah, let's go!" her brother nodded enthusiastically. "That ray gives me the creeps!"

"Me too," she agreed.

On the way to the door, Hedge paused. "Do you hear something?" The two turned around together and screamed.

The Lab Ray was out of control. Whatever metal rod Tihandra had hit, it was obviously important. The great ray was swinging from side to side, wildly shooting bright light rays everywhere.

"DUCK!!" yelled Tihandra, throwing herself and her little brother to the floor as the ray hit them. They felt the warmth of the laser pass through their bodies, and it was over. Tihandra quickly looked down. Her starry coat was untouched, and her brother appeared to be his typical self. "Wow, it didn't seem to do anything!"

"Phew, that was lucky. I mean, think of all the horrible things a malfunctioning Lab Ray could do!" her brother said, indicating the ray with a lift of his head. His head then whipped back around, at lightning speed, as he gasped in terror.

"What? What is it?" his sister asked nervously. Her jaw dropped as the realization hit her... the Lab Ray had been big before, but nowhere near THAT big...

...Silence reigned through the room for a few moments, before the situation became too much for Tihandra to fathom, and the world around her became black and spinning as she fainted onto the cold steel floor. The last thing she heard was Hedge calling her name in a worried tone...

* * * * *

"...Tihandra...Ti? Ti!" The Zafara started to stir as her brother shook her back awake. "Are you okay?" He had concern etched on his face. "You scared me for a second there!"

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, Hedge. I had the worst dream..." She trailed off while looking at her surroundings. Then, catching her breath, fainted again.

* * * * *

This time when Tihandra woke up, her brother was sitting a ways away, drumming his right hoof on the ground. "You know, you have to stop doing that sooner or later, Ti."

Tihandra closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. "Hedge," she said, "I just don't understand. What's happening?!"

The Moehog softened his tone as he answered his sister's question. "To tell you the truth, I'm not quite sure. I had no clue the Lab Ray could shrink--"

"WHAT?! THE LAB RAY SHRANK US?" Tihandra interrupted frantically.

Sighing, Hedge waited for her to finish her outburst before continuing. "Calm down, sis. I thought you were supposed to be the older, calmer, and wiser one here! Yes, it did shrink us, but I know how to fix what it did to us!"

Ti, who had been trying to cope with the situation, brightened instantly as she heard her brother mention he had a solution. Running up to him, she hugged him. "Forget about me being wiser," she said. "I always knew you were the smarter one in the family! Now, what do we have to do? This whole thing is freaking me out!"

"All we need is for you to help me climb up and reach the switch that made this thing go berserk in the first place. By all means, it should set the ray in reverse!" He smiled at his own idea. Tihandra nodded her head and the two set to work. However, after five or six fruitless tries, it was obvious that they were much too small to carry out the whole plan.

"Sorry, Ti. I thought for sure we'd be able to reach the switch." Hedge slumped to the ground and looked down, disappointed in himself.

Tihandra instantly felt bad for her brother. "Don't feel bad, Hedge! You tried your best, and that's all that matters! Hey, look at it this way... at least we get out of school tomorrow!" Grinning, she saw him glance back up, laughter dancing just behind his eyes at her joke. Trying not to let him get upset again, she tried to think of another plan fast. "Why don't we find a way out of this room? Maybe we can find someone whose willing to help us!"

With that, she helped her saddened brother up, then walked him in the direction of the door, hoping they'd be able to find a way out...

...They approached the door, and listened to it creaking back and forth for a moment. Suddenly and unpredictably, as though the door had been caught in a high wind, it slammed shut, knocking Tihandra and her brother off their feet. They got up, brushing dust off their knees; Tihandra and Hedge looked at each other desperately.

"Now what are we going to do?" sighed Tihandra, after several moments of silence.

They both looked around the room for other means of escape. There seemed to be no windows, no other doors, and not so much as a crack in the iron walls that surrounded the dreadful place. Except...

"Ti! Look!" said Hedge, pointing in the direction right behind Tihandra. She swiveled around, and spotted what her brother had been pointing at right away. It seemed to be a pipe of some kind. It was extremely old looking and rusty. "We could slide down that. Maybe it leads somewhere outside, so we can get out of this place," Hedge said, looking at the pipe again.

"Hedge, you are a genius!" shrieked Tihandra, hugging her brother again.

They walked up to the rusty old pipe. Tihandra peered down it cautiously. It looked dark and slimy, and smelled musty. She couldn't see any sign of the end of the pipe, and it was impossible to tell which direction the pipe lead.

"What if this doesn't work?" Tihandra whispered cautiously.

"Well, it's our only chance," said Hedge, who was now looking down the pipe, too. "I'll go first," he added. Hedge bravely stepped up into the hole that led to the pipe.

"No, I'll go first," said Tihandra. "It's my fault we're here in the first place. If I hadn't wanted to change my appearance so badly, then none of this would have happened."

"All right, if you insist," sighed Hedge, stepping away from the pipe so Tihandra could get through.

"Ok, I'm going. 3... 2... 1... go!" shouted Tihandra.

She jumped into the pipe, immediately feeling herself slide downward on what seemed to be a large amount of green slime. The pipe was dark, musty, and very steep. It seemed to go on for ages. She kept plunging down... down... down...

...After what seemed like an eternity, Tihandra finally noticed a dim speck of light signaling the end of the pipe. Unfortunately, she was going much too fast to effectively slow her progress through the muck-infested pipe. Tihandra soared out of the pipe, performed a not-so-graceful aerial ballet, and landed face down in a puddle of what she sincerely hoped was water (although it didn't smell like it).

After spending a few seconds on the ground making sure she had suffered no broken bones, and was indeed still alive, Tihandra picked herself up and tried to brush off her fur. Unfortunately, her brand new starry coat was now covered in a green slime that probably wouldn't come off, no matter how hard she tried.

"Perfect! It's not enough that I was shrunk, but now I also have the appearance of a giant booger," muttered Tihandra to herself.

At that moment she heard what sounded like the very muffled call of a humpback whale. After her initial confusion, Tihandra realized it was coming from the pipe she had just slid down. It was Hedge, asking if she was okay.

"I'm fine," yelled Tihandra, "if, by fine, you mean small, cold, dirty, smelly, and lost!"

"So, what is it like down there?" questioned Hedge.

Tihandra realized that she had been too busy fussing over her appearance, and the possibility of broken bones, to notice where she had landed. She took a look around and decided that sliding down the pipe had been a big mistake.

She was in a dark room that smelled of rotten eggs and skunk. The only light came from a bare bulb that seemed to be hanging impossibly high over Tihandra's tiny body. The light from the bulb revealed damp, stone walls covered with filth, piles of garbage, and what disturbingly looked like bones. There was one door to the left of the pipe, but it was closed and made of steel. Much too big for Tihandra to move in her present condition. She was about to call up to Hedge, to throw down a rope so she could get out of this rank place, when she heard a noise coming from the pipe. The noise got louder, and then out flew Hedge himself.

"I was tired of waiting for you to answer, so I thought I would come down and have a look myself," Hedge declared with a slight smirk.

As he viewed his surroundings the smirk vanished.

Tihandra gave her brother a disbelieving look, then began shouting at the top of her lungs, "Good going! Now we're stuck in this place. We'll probably starve to death, or die from the fumes. You know, sometimes I can't believe that you're related to me."

Hedge apologized and put a comforting hoof on his sister's shoulder.

"Calm down, Ti. If we just relax and think, I am sure we'll figure a way out of this."

At that moment, both Tihandra and Hedge heard what sounded like footsteps outside the steel door.

"See, there is someone coming to save us," said Hedge as he smiled at his sister.

However, as the footsteps came closer, they both realized that whatever was making them was very big. Bigger than even Tihandra and Hedge's short stature would account for. And to their horror, they heard what could only be the deep growling of a very angry animal.

"Quick, hide!" shouted Hedge.

It was too late, though. The handle on the door was already turning...

...in a fit of desperation, Tihandra pulled her little brother into a discarded cereal box that had been upturned. In the darkness the two little Neopians heard the hinges of the door groan open.

Tihandra couldn't believe that the room could take on an even greater stench, but sure enough, with the arrival of the snarling beast had come an equally sinister and potent smell.

Hedge sniffed thoughtfully. That smell was strangely familiar... who did it remind him of? The smell of Neoschool and his dreaded class teacher came to mind.

Whilst Hedge was pondering this, Tihandra and her brother heard a gruff voice. "Anyone there?" it barked. "Hmm... must be them darn rats again." They listened to the beast shuffling around, and after what seemed like a century of waiting, loud, obnoxious snoring echoed throughout the room.

Tihandra, who had kept remarkably quiet, now spoke up. "How on Neopia can anyone sleep in this room?!" she exclaimed. Hedge rushed over to her and aggressively mimed a "zipped mouth" expression.

"Now's our chance to escape. I didn't hear that thing close the door, so let's go quickly and quietly, ok?" he whispered.

Hedge and Tihandra slipped out of the cereal box, then climbed laboriously over the rotten filth strewn around the room. Hedge, unable to prevent his curiosity, turned to get a peek of the room's occupant.

Recognizing at once the sinister bulk of his class teacher, Hedge let out a loud gasp. It was now Tihandra's turn to tell Hedge to be quiet.

"Now really, we'll wake him up! Quickly now!" she muttered.

At last brother and sister made it through the door, and into a long, cold, dark tunnel. Torches were held in brackets far apart from each other, so the light level was limited.

Tihandra let out a moan of grief as she viewed the tunnel. "It'll take years to cross this! Oh, how terrible it is to be small!" Overcome with emotion, Tihandra sank to the floor and wailed loudly.

Hedge stared at his sister in disbelief. How could she be so babyish? He hauled her up and stared into her eyes. "Tihandra, listen... we're going to make it!" His voice sounded weak and shaky, but he stood firmly as he looked at Tihandra.

Gradually suppressing her sobs, Tihandra wiped her eyes. The silence that had now fallen between them allowed the two to hear what was happening in the tunnel. Unknowingly, they had completely missed the fact that an odd whirring noise was approaching them.

Hedge frowned at his sister to prevent her from wailing again, and dragged her into what would've been the equivalent of a mouse hole on the earth. Being so small, Tihandra and Hedge had ample room.

Tihandra sat awkwardly on the floor, then looked up at her brother. "What was that sound, Hedge? It's getting closer, isn't it?!?" she moaned.

Hedge sat down beside her, looked glumly into her eyes and nodded...

...as the sound came closer. In the dim, flickering torchlight the walls of the tunnel seemed covered with shadows, but Tihandra could now make out a shade, darker than all the rest--a moving shadow of something ominous.

Hedge had seen the shadow, too. Whatever it was, it was large. There was something protruding from one of the shadow's appendages... perhaps it was that which produced the whirring sound, though neither of the two huddling siblings could be sure. For a moment they stared at each other in horror, as the menacing figure drew near.

Now they could hear the heavy, dull echo of falling footsteps, ricocheting around the tunnel walls. The paralysis of fear that had been holding the two suddenly evaporated in a burst of adrenalin. Simultaneously, Hedge and Tihandra ran forward at full speed... away from the oncoming danger, both of them unable to keep from screaming at the top of their lungs.

Tihandra and Hedge looked at each other, their fear mirrored in one another's eyes. For a moment Tihandra found herself strangely comforted by the thought that her brother was in this with her. She then stole a look behind her, the blood pounding in her ears, and all other thoughts left her mind in a whirlwind of shock. When she looked back at Hedge, she saw that he, too, had realized their fatal mistake.

And then the torches flickered out, together, as the bulk of the creature filled the space behind them. Tihandra and Hedge had always taken pride in their speed, yes, and had thought that, whatever the source of the sound, they at least had a chance of outrunning it. But how could they have ever dreamed of outrunning such a garangutan beast, when they themselves stood only inches above the ground?

The whirring sound increased in volume. Tihandra found that the burst of speed had left her, and backed away slowly, step by step. She could now feel the wind that came from the spinning blades of the object that generated the noise. She closed her eyes and grimaced in horror. The whirring came closer, and closer, and closer...

..."Stupid fan!" came a voice. "Always running haywire on me. This is the last time I use it to cool off the classrooms. I can't believe it almost mauled Miss Luna!"

The scraggly Kyrii who had been talking (which Hedge and Tihandra recognized as the school janitor), picked the gigantic fan up a couple of inches and tossed it into the garbage-filled room. A gruff moaning came from within.

"Who woke me up from my nice nap?" came the rough voice of Hedge's teacher.

"Sleeping in-between classes again, Mr. Groaniff? I don't understand why you don't do that in the teacher's lounge..." said the Kyrii.

"If Principal Kindra caught me sleeping, I'd be fired for sure you nitwit!"

Mr. Groaniff got up and came to the doorway. He was a fat green Bruce. He spotted Ti and Hedge on the ground. They both froze.

"What are two perfectly good plushies doing way down here?" he asked the janitor.

The Kyrii shrugged his shoulders. "Going back up with me?"

"Might as well..." he said, changing the subject as he picked up Ti and Hedge. "I think I'll give them to my daughter. She'll have fun with them!"

Tihandra watched her brother's eyes widen in fright at his teacher's idea, but they knew that if they moved, he would probably put them in a glass case and feed them like they were pets. Mr. Groaniff was weird in that way.

They went up a flight of stairs after the long, damp tunnel, then through a couple of doors before reaching a white hallway with lots of students milling around. Ti and Hedge were in their school, North Mystery Island Neoschool!

Tihandra pricked up her ears up as she heard some strands of conversation concerning her and her little brother.

"They were last seen by their owner. He says they were going to the Lab Ray..."

"Can you believe they disappeared...?"

"Poor Ti! I was supposed to go shopping with her today..."

"I hope they find Hedge soon! He was supposed to help me with my Gormball skills..."

Mr. Groaniff placed them gently in his desk drawer and closed it. Ti and Hedge both heard some students entering the room and sitting down (not to mention some gagging noises).

Tihandra turned to her brother, and he began to explain how horrible their situation really was. Ti didn't know what Mr. Groaniff was like...

..."And then he made us dissect them!"

"What?!?" exclaimed Tihandra. "But, but, that's just wrong! No one in their right mind would do that to a Petpet!"

Hedge's face fell as he replied, "But that's just what I mean. He isn't sane. Everyone agrees that there has never been a science teacher who was crazier. He thinks anything that isn't a student is worthy of investigation. He also thinks that investigating should always involve a study of the insides!"

"What do we do, what do we do?!?" cried Ti, running around the drawer. Hedge grabbed his sister and pulled her down beside him, putting a hoof over her mouth.

"Be quiet and stay still!" he hissed. "If he realizes we're not plushies, we're done for!"

"That's it!" said Ti. "He said he was going to give us to his daughter! All we have to do is pretend to be plushies, then run away when the girl goes to sleep!"

"Yeah, maybe," said Hedge. He didn't sound convinced.

The pair waited out the rest of the day in the drawer, listening to Mr. Groaniff drone on. Finally, after hours of waiting, the last bell sounded. Ti scooted closer to her brother, and felt Hedge stiffen. "Remember," he whispered out of the corner of his mouth, "We're plushies."

A second later the drawer opened, and Mr. Groaniff lifted them out of the drawer.

"Cassie is going to love you!" he exclaimed. "She's been begging me to get her a new plushie, ever since she burned the last three up in that little experiment of hers."

He then put the two of them into his briefcase and closed it. As the light disappeared and the snap closed, they heard him chuckle to himself. "Little tyke!" he chortled, "Going to grow up to be just like her old man!"

Hedge reached out a shaking hoof to his sister, and felt her little frame heaving with silent tears.

"We're going to die!" she whispered frantically. "I'll never go shopping with my friends again, or play with my Usuki dolls, or take a trip to the really squiggly city that doesn't exist to get jelly! I'm too young to die!"

"Calm down. It will be all right, you'll see!" cooed Hedge. But inside he agreed with his sister. No more Gormball, no more going to the Faerie races, no more trips to the Deserted Fairground... would their owner cry when they failed to come home? Would everyone forget about them? He fell into a silent reflection of his life as they plodded along.

* * * * *

"Hi honey, I'm home!" called Mr. Groaniff as he entered his NeoHome.

"Daddy daddy daddy!" cried a bitsy pink Bruce. "Did you get my plushie? Huh, huh, did ya did ya?" she cried.

"Of course I did! Here, wait just a second."

Leaning over, he opened the briefcase and withdrew Tihandra and Hedge. "Here ya go," he said as he thrust them at his daughter. "Now Cassie, remember. No playing with fire unless I'm there to watch you, okay?"

"Of course daddy! I won't burn these plushies!" Cassie said in a sweet little voice.

"That's a good girl," said Mr. Groaniff as he left the room.

"I won't burn them..." Cassie said again quietly. "I'll just cut them up!"...

It was too much. The prospect of being chopped to pieces by his least favorite teacher's bratty daughter was so unnerving that Hedge cried out, "NOOOOO!"

"Hedge!" Ti moaned. "Thanks for giving us away! Now--" But she was cut off as a deep voice sounded from outside the room.

"Cass? Time for dinner!"

"Five minutes, daddy... pleeeeeeease?!?" Cassie called back innocently, a malicious smile lighting up her face. Suddenly, the sound of footsteps fell outside the room, and the door was pulled open. There stood Mr. Groaniff, surrounded by all the light and looking very intimidating.

"Remember... plushies," Hedge muttered to Ti before they both stiffened and plastered their best plushie smiles on their faces.

"Cassie?" Mr. Groaniff boomed. "What are you doing with scissors in your hand?"

"Uhh... dye-sec-tioning," Cassie replied innocently. Mr. Groaniff chortled, and was about to reply when the shadow of a second Bruce filled the space behind him.

"Oh, honey!" Mrs. Groaniff beamed. "Glad to be home, went out for a little shopping in Neopia Central, you know." She set down her armfuls of shopping bags and peered at Ti and Hedge.

"Oh, did Daddy get Cassie some new plushies?" she asked.

"Yeah, little rascal's learning to dissect. Smart little girl, aren't you, Cassie?" answered Mr. Groaniff fondly. Cassie grabbed hold of Hedge and Tihandra, holding them out.

"They can talk," she announced. Tihandra stiffened in alarm, but out of the corner of her eye she saw Hedge throw her a look that read, "Stay where you are." So then, she rehitched her plushie grin back on her face.

"I want this one," Cassie began, shaking Hedge, "to be just like this one... nice and starry!" she said, rattling Tihandra.

"Hmm, dear?" said Mrs. Groaniff absentmindedly, studying her reflection in a new blue mirror she had bought.

"NICE AND STARRY!!!" insisted Cassie. "Let's go over there!" She pointed at the distant form of the Lab Ray, outlined as a dark shadow against the cloudless blue sky. Mr. Groaniff sighed.

"Well, when Cassie wants something, there's no stopping her," he muttered to his wife. Then, turning back to Cassie, he announced, "All right, Cass! Let's go, hidey-ho!" Cassie clambered eagerly onto her father's back, clutching Ti and Hedge tightly in her flippers. Ti could barely contain her excitement. They were returning to the Lab Ray... soon, everything would be fixed and back to normal! This time, the smile on her face was 100% real as she jostled along...

Soon enough, the family had arrived at the Lab Ray, ready to appease their daughter with a few zaps for her new plushie.

Cassie waddled over to the chair that the Lab Ray was pointing at and placed Hedge where the beam would easily reach him. Tihandra bit her lip as she watched her brother from her perch, still in Cassie's flipper.

"Stand back, sweetie pie," Mr. Groaniff's voice boomed, "so I can zap the plushie for you."

"Okay!" Cassie said, jumping up and down happily. "Starry! Starry! Starry!" she shouted.

Mr. Groaniff started up the Lab Ray, then pushed the big red button. "Here it comes. Let's watch what happens to the plushie," he directed his daughter.

"Ooooh," she said as the beam from the Ray lit up the Lab.

Hedge found himself sitting in the chair of the Secret Laboratory, staring down the barrel of the Lab Ray... at its normal size! "YES!" he cheered, jumping up and down. Then he noticed his fur. "Hey, and I'm starry, too!"

The family looked on in surprise. Cassie squealed with delight. "Now my plushie is starry and big!" She ran forward and hugged Hedge.

"But I'm not--oof!" The air puffed out of his cheeks as the little Bruce squeezed him tightly. When he could breathe again he said, "But I'm not a plushie." He looked over to where Mr. Groaniff was standing by the Lab Ray, looking very confused. "Don't you recognize me? I'm one of your students... Hedge!"

Mr. Groaniff blinked. "I do have a student named Hedge, but he's not starry... and what happened to the Moehog plushie that I got my daughter?"

"My sister and I," Hedge said, directing the teacher's attention to the other "plushie" Cassie was still holding, "got zapped by the Lab Ray and it shrank us. We've been trying to get back to normal all day!"

"Oh dear," Mr. Groaniff said. "That's awful. Here, Cassie. Let me see the other plushie."

"Are you going to make this one big, too?" Cassie asked, handing Tihandra to her father. Tihandra waved up at the teacher.

"Yes, dear." Mr. Groaniff placed Tihandra on the chair and zapped her with the Ray.

Tihandra found herself back to normal size! She ran to her brother and hugged him. "We're back! We're back! We made it!" she shouted.

But then Cassie began to cry. "Daddy! It's not starry anymore! I want both plushies to be starry!" She thrust her little clenched flippers down at her sides. "It's not fair!"

Mr. Groaniff knelt down by his daughter. "I'm sorry, dear, but they're not actually plushies. They're students. They have to go home to their owner. We'll stop and get you two nice new starry plushies on the way home. Is that okay?"

Cassie wiped away a tear and looked up at the two students who had once been her plushies. They were still hugging each other and dancing for joy. "Okay, Daddy."

Just then, Tihandra clued in to what Cassie had been crying about. "Wait a minute..." She looked down at her fur. "No! I'm boring old red now! All that trouble, and..."

Hedge pointed to the Lab Ray. "We could always try it again if you want."

Tihandra looked at the Ray and made a face, sticking out her tongue. She shook her head. "Uh, no. I think we've had enough of the Lab Ray for today. Let's go home."

And so they did. Their owner and their friends were so happy to see them, they almost believed Tihandra and Hedge's crazy story.

The End
